Copacabana Hotel & Suites
Ranked #22 of 40 Hotels in Jaco
Reviewed June 20, 2008

I have stayed at the Copacabana around 20 times. They support the Surfing Federation in Costa Rica, beach cleanups, overall town planning and more. They are one of the "good citizens" of Jaco.

The staff is always friendly with me. I am from the US, but long ago gave up the "ugly American" attitude. I go to Jaco to enjoy the beach, the ocean, the laid back lifestyle. I have been there several times when I heard people say "I changed my flights, and I'm staying here another week...or two!"

I have taken my four children there and they have had a good time, been well treated, and love the food like I do.

The menu is varied and priced very reasonably. Around 10 items for breakfast ranging from fruit plates to heavier fillng omelettes and more. Lunch, snacks, dinners...lots of fresh seafood, all prepared on order.

The suites overlook the ocean...right on the beach really means right on the beach! These are large rooms that easily sleep 4. They provide kitchens and thus a good place to buy local food and cook it ourselves, which we do frequently. The refrigerators are good size for this type of situation, and hold the food well. I was just told they are adding jacuzzi hot tubs on the balconies!

The studio rooms are smaller, but easily adequate for 2. We choose these when we don't plan to cook, and don't need the view. More economical too, when that matters.

The air conditioning, fans, water, lights all work normally. Occasionally there is a problem, like anywhere, but the staff is quick to fix it. Water pressure does vary, but that is a Costa Rica building problem, not a Copacabana problem.

The pool is cleaned daily, and this last trip they were drained and re-tiling the whole thing for even better maintenance.

The new spa is wonderful, the massages great, and the Pina Coladas sweet and delicious.

If you want a great value right on the beach in Jaco, I whole-heartedly recommend the Copacabana Hotel & Suites.

All I can say is I had a blast. This is exactly the vacation I was looking for. The food was excellent and the entertainment was non-stop. We stayed for 7 days. I will be going back again. If your looking for a place to have FUN ( not laying around reading ) this is it. I will go back soon.

I have stayed at the Copacabana many times over the past few years. I have never had a bad experience. Located close to the main street in Jaco, yet on the beach. The same employees have been there for years, making it a destination that is almost like family. It is relately quiet during the day, with music at night.
Excellant food and service.
I highly recommend the suites. Each has a view of the beach.
This is the only hotel I would stay in Jaco.

We took four rooms at the Copacabana for New Year's. Three generations, ranging in age from 21 to 91, a mix of Ticos, Cubans and North Americans. The property is simple and clean, with a good location on the beach.

It wasn't long before we noticed the prostitution, it's pretty easy to figure out when nice looking young Costa Rican women are there with scurvy middle-aged men from the US. But the place wasn't a porno palace with sex in the hot tub or anything, you could see the match-ups, and hear the girls' conversations in Spanish, but all transactions were strictly private.

The staff was very friendly, the price was decent, the breakfasts were light (just fruit and coffee - go to one of the many restaurants in the area for a hearty breakfast) the dinners were good. This was out fifth visit to the Costa Rican Pacific coast and I'd place it squarely in the middle of our experiences.

One standout was the complementary massage. Strictly therapeutic, no funny business despite the goings on in the rest of the hotel, and the best massage any of us had ever had.

There was a little mixup at bill paying time, apparently a previous guest's charges stayed on the room folio and wound up on our bill. We'll give the hotel the benefit of the doubt, but note that there was a doubt.

We won't return to Jaco. Not because of the hotel, but because the town is on the cusp of total ruin by tourism and the beach is messed up - lots of rocks washed down from construction sites spoiling what used to be a pure sand beach. But if you go to Jaco, you could do a whole lot worse than the Copacabana.

Went to Jaco Beach without a reservation and Tried to get into Claritas but was full. They recommended to me CopaCabana. I got the the recption area and a Filipino lady attended us. She was so sweet and accomodating to our request. The whole staff was excellent. I must say the price was very good for two double beds. Had a great air condition, Fan, Cable TV and hot water. The place was very clean in and out of the room. It has a pool with swim up bar, restaurant and in on the beach. I would not take kids at night as a couple of night girls will roam the bar at night. The hotel does not let many enter as the bar is not that big. I only saw three that night. Another gentleman had gone fishing and brought back some nice Mahi Mahi fish which the kitchen had prepared for him. Over all This is a great clean place to stay and it was $100.00 for the room with tax. Just remember Jaco is really not for families yet. I probably would not even let my teenage kids get in the rough tides as they do have many rip currents. Maybe once all the new American hotel chains finish being built then this will be more family driven. Unfortunately then, Jaco will just be another American tourist trap.

I just came back from Costa Rica, i stay in Heredia for 1 night and then i went to Jaco, i decided to stay at the Copacabana.
The room was great the place is right on the beach and just one block from all the town activities. Is true that there are prostitutes but is not a Copacabana thing is a Country thing, you will see hookers anywhere you stay in Costa Rica....the lights are perfect in the room you dont need anything else... i had and small problem with the ac but they fixed right the way, so was not a big deal.... When you go to Costa Rica you have to remember that you are in a third world country so just enjoy your time there and dont waste your time complaining about everything, If not go to another hotel and pay 300 dollars a night..

Enjoy your trip and enjoy this nice hotel and beatiful country

We stayed here for 4 nites too long. The Loud Music was just unbelievable, you could not possible sleep until about 2am after the screaming(Singing)and karakoe stopped. Then when the locals started their cars and the Hotels Dogs started barking it was another event. The 2 dogs that live in the lobby of this Hotel bark through out the nite. No rooster here to wake you. The bar has very suspicious activities going on. You soon realize that you are in a beach town that caters to men looking for a "good time!'. The Pool is so dirty, it has ring aroung the collar. The "garden" area around the pool is littered with old rusty washers and dryers, garbage, and who knows what else, the dogs caught something one day, with a very long tail. The stove in our room never did work. The lighting in the room is so dim, you can hardly see yourself in the mirror. Poor water pressure, air conditioning vent right above you face while you are trying to sleep. Absolutely the worst place I have ever stayed in anywhere in the world. Please advoid this place, it will wreck your holiday. Oh, I should also mention that the beach out front is actually a Dog Beach.....never seen so many dogs on a beach, and ofcourse no one is picking up after them, so be careful where you step. Luckly we found other beautiful beaches at the many beautiful national parks we visited.

We appreciate all comments from our guests whether they are good or bad except wherever the comment is not facutal, we then believe a reply is warranted. For security purposes, there are 2 dogs on the premises that the guests enjoy being with. On occasion the Thursday night karaoke extends into the morning hours ONLY if our guests wish for it to continue. These guests made no comments in their review if they brought their concerns to management pertaining to the music, stove, lighting, water pressure, pool or the air conditioning vents.

Music can always be turned downed if it is affecting a guest. The stoves are run on a propane tank and the tank can be recharged. Poor water pressure is often fixed by changing the shower head. The air conditioning vents can be redirected. The pool is cleaned once or twice per day. Some of the tiles around the pool were old with stains that could no longer be cleaned. We have tried for over a year to find matching tiles but were unsuccessful, we then decided to reitle the pool and this has now been completed. All beaches in Costa Rica are owned by the government with the public has full access along with their pets. It is illegal for us to control the beach access in front of us, however, each day our staff try to clean it. There are no rusty appliances in the garden area. The hotel has a maintenance area at the back where appliances are repaired, but in no way interfere with the guests enjoyment. We wished the guests had brought their concerns to us at the time of their stay, consequently, we could have corrected any issues they had.
