“Nice surf beach”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 9, 2014

This is a great little beach to introduce beginners to surfing or for experts to enjoy the waves. It is a public beach where cars can drive up so that is really only complaint and it can get crowded on the weekends.

“Nice but the locals don't appreciate it”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 29, 2014

Perhaps one of the most unkept beaches I have been to. The locals "camp out" which is not a problem, however as a whole they don't clean up after themselves so expect to see beer cans, cups, and the like laying around. However, it's a surfers paradise and the sunsets were terrific. It was the warmest Pacific water I have ever experienced.

“Disappointing beach days”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 28, 2014

My husband and I had been to Tamarindo before and loved it, but we wanted to go somewhere new so Jaco seemed like a good place to book a vacation with our friends, three other couples. We left disappointed, wishing we had gone back to Tamarindo or stayed up at Manuel Antonio instead. Jaco just seems rough in every way, from the streets to the black-gray-sand beach. It just feels dirty. I've been to a lot of beaches so I feel qualified to say that and I'm not trying to be uppity, just honest. On the bright side, the boys loved the beach because of the epic, crashing waves. They gladly jumped in and were thrashed on their surfboards for three days, but the girls would have rather lounged at a more low-key wave zone like Manuel Antonio. Lesson learned.

“South end of Jaco Beach is the Best!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 23, 2014

The south end black sand beaches are like fine black sugar. Just beautiful...yes, hot, but, it just motivates you to run into the ocean faster...or wear your flip-flops!! South end also seemed like a great crowd; family-oriented, lovely sunsets and strolls along the beach at all times of the day/night. We loved it!

“Low key surf town ~ fish taco paradise”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 23, 2014

If you are looking for great surf in Costa Rica, Jaco is the place to be. I had beginning lessons on the beach, but we were told many pro surfers go to Jaco. The difference in wave height varies so much that it can accommodate the new surfer, but be very high for the experienced. Many rip tides.

The town has great venues for happy hour or fish tacos. If you go to Jaco Beach, be SURE to visit:
#1 Taco Bar: order fish tacos & take a seat on their wooden swings connected to the bar -- fantastic atmosphere.

#2 Los Amigos: You can get huge bowls of noodles (Thai/Asian fusion) or fish & rice for around $10. Be SURE to check out their bathrooms, they will make you chuckle. (Pee aqui)

#3: Surf Dogs: The bar has surfboards for tables, brightly colored walls & also offers darts, ladder golf & other "drinking games" if you like the happy hour vibe. Go if you are looking for frozen drink specials.

If you are traveling on a budget, the Buddha House hostel looked very accommodating (did not stay there) but met many people who highly recommend. You will meet many locals in this town as well as 20something travelers. I went in August, and there wasn't much of a night life in their low season. Maybe it picks up in December-February (?) but if you are going in the summer, do not plan to stay there at night for hopping clubs. Very low key vibe, great food, amazing beach for surfing -- not great for swimming or spectacularly "pretty".
