Jaco Beach, as a beach sucks -- The best thing about Jaco Beach is that is is close to San Jose ( 1 hour ) via the new toll road. The best beaches for sand quality in Costa Rica are going up north near the border with Nicaragua

I don't think the beach gets cleaned (at least not when we were there) so there is some trash above the high tide line, but that's the humans fault not the beach's. The south end is much calmer and great for kids to swim in. We read a lot of rip tide warnings but did not experience anything on the south end of the beach, so we were comfortable with the kids playing in the water with us on the beach (ages 9 and up). The water is warm and clean and the waves are enough to have fun in but also big enough to learn to surf. I imagine if there are a ton of surfers, you'd have to watch yourself, but we were able to find plenty of space. It's a little tight at high tide and gets crowded with locals tailgating on the weekend, but we didn't have any issues. We also didn't experience any of the petty theft that we were warned about. We were pretty vigilant anyway, which is always a good idea. As you move further north up the beach the conditions change and didn't look good for kids to play. If you're a beach snob, then this may not be the place for you, but I think it's the best beach in the area for kids from what we experienced.

Playa Jaco is a small town with all your needs from grocery stores, movie theater, restaurants, bars, and shops. Jaco is a little more expensive than other coastal towns but with many choices of restaurant and bars their is a spot for everyone. The beach has darker sand and is great for surfing. With many different options for surf lessons (check out lessons from Beds on Bohio Hostel) and beaches any level of surfer will have a great time. You can tan and swim on Playa Jaco but it is best to know when high/low tide is......the current can get very strong here but the waves are a great time to enjoy an afternoon of swimming.

Lots of sand and great surf, but not for sunning or swimming. Definately a surfer hangout. Loved all the shops and bars.

Jaco is cute. It's a nice little city one hour from San Jose. It's easy to get to and has all the amenities of a small city. The beaches are just ok. They're pretty rocky, so it makes long walks not so comfortable. It's not the best place for swimming as there are some heavy rip tides. It's great for surfing or boogie board, especially for beginners when it's small. It's a nice little paradise.
