“Villa Caletas, The best of Costa Rica”
Reviewed May 1, 2007

My wife and I stayed at Villa Caletas for our honeymoonlast year. we
stayed there in the middle of July for five nights, before heading up to the Northern Pacific for five nights. We originally were going to spend four nights, but ended up adding a night at Villa Caletas. WOW, are we glad we did.! This place is SIMPLY AMAZING!!!!! The grounds are so amazing that we had many excursions planned, but ultimately only went on one (to Manuel Antonio, Worth it). The place was so nice we did not want to leave for the whole day. The food is not as bad as a lot of reviews claim. The options however are limited. We stayed in unit #29 which is the farthest away from the main hotel but it wasn’t a problem. It was a beautiful walk through incredible grounds filled with amazing things to see around every turn. We saw Toucans, coati, many kinds of frogs, and lizards. The bugs were not bad at all. There were a lot of spiders around but none
in the room and they did not bother you. The staff was very friendly and helpful, and not overbearing at all. Especially Eric! Eric has been working at Villa Caletas for six years and he was very proud to work there. He shared many stories with us.

My wife and I have just returned from spending 5 nights at Villa Caletas and I cannot give enough praise to the beauty and location of this place. The view from our room and from the entire hotel overlooking the Pacific is just amazing. We were very pleased with our entire experience. The rooms are very adequate, clean and in close proximity to the resturants and the pool area. Although I would not consider the food to be "world-class", it was very good. The staff was very helpful in addressing our needs. Without hesitation I would recommend this place for those seeking rest, relaxation and the natural beauty of the area.

The hotel is beautiful, but be prepared for hillside hikes up and down thousands of steps. There were huge bugs crawling all over our room the night we arrived, and no matter how many we killed, they always returned. The view is incredible, and the pool is wonderful. The breakfast is probably the best food there with a number of options at reasonable prices. I would avoid the room service as the food was not very good, and service was slow. The beds are terribly uncomfortable, and the rooms are decorated poorly. However, it is such a cheap deal for a $200/night villa that it's worth it. And the staff is incredibly friendly as well. If you want more excitement, I'd recommend spending some time in Los Suenos. Jaco is pretty filthy, so a few hours there is more than enough.

My partner and I stayed at Villa Caletas for 5 nights and had an incredible experience. We chose this hotel because we wanted the luxury of a 5 star hotel but also wanted to get a taste of the real Costa Rica, which we thought would be hard if we had stayed at a Four Seasons type of resort.
Everything about this hotel was perfect - from the smiling faces and great service offered by the employees, to watching the sunset from the amphitheater every afternoon. The pool area was just fantastic and there's a pool bar so we didn't have to go far for our afternoon cocktails! We had several spa treatments each of which were wonderful, and the concierge arranged a number of activities which we enjoyed immensely (especially the visit to Manuel Antonio State Park where we got to see tons of birds, monkeys and sloths).
The food was great!! It was a treat to be able to sit outside, eat great food and watch beautiful birds fly by. The wine list was excellent. Don't leave without trying the Creme Brulee - in our opinion the best we've ever tasted (we had it every night!)
We came home completely refreshed and thinking about when to go back next. What was also nice to be able to take a direct flight to San Jose and then just have a two hour drive to the hotel. This avoided having to take a small plane which made us very happy.
Please go and enjoy this hotel - you will not be disappointed :)

My husband and I stayed at Villa Caletas for our honeymoon. It was amazing!!!! The master suite was clean, comfortable, and extremely private. The service was also excellent. The concierge (Edwin) was very attentive. We enjoyed the deep sea fishing and the canopy tour. The trip to see the volcano was long and not really worth it. We also enjoyed sitting on our patio eating breakfast each morning. They have a very yummy breakfast with the best fruit. Dinners were alright, food was kind of bland. It was quite a walk from the main building to our room, but that is expected for the privacy. The sunsets are absolutely beautiful. I couldn't have asked for a more romantic location.

We just had our wedding at Villa Caletas a few weeks ago. Everything worked out wonderfully in the end. We had some difficulties trying to plan the wedding. The coordinator for special events works out of San Jose. She seems to be overtasked or not big on communicating with our customers. The rehearsal dinner and wedding were absolutely amazing, but the anxiety prior to the event might have sent a bridezilla over the edge. Just a couple of months before the wedding, we would have to email the coordinator 4-5 times to get a response. We would go weeks without hearing anything. We didn't sign the final contract until 2 days before the wedding. But its Costa Rica. The laid back attitude is a little hard for a Type A doctor like myself to get used to. But even my husband, the most laid back person I know, was getting frustrated.
Don't let this keep you from staying or even planning an event at Villa Caletas. The room reservations got mixed up from the coordinator to the hotel, but the staff fixed everything in a matter of minutes. They were very accomodating and went above and beyond to please their customers. The views are amazing which is why we chose this place for our wedding. The food I thought was very good...much improved from when we were first there 2 years ago. Breakfast was definitely the best and reasonably priced. The dinner menu was hit and miss. This is definitely a relaxing, quiet place. Young singles looking for a lot of action may not appreciate the serenity, but their are plenty of tours and activities you can arrange through the concierge. We had one guest who was 6 months pregnant and she absolutely loved relaxing at the pool, spa, and restaurant for her entire stay. As we were looking out at the view we commented that it was a little slice of heaven. We never noticed the annoying music. But I love music and we had a rowdy calypso band at our wedding which was awesome...so I may not be the best judge on that subject.
In the end, it was an incredible experience. There are some bugs and sometimes the hot water doesn't work so well, but you are staying on top of a mountain in the jungle. If you don't want to experience Costa Rica in all its beauty then I would recommend the ridiculousy huge Marriott on the coast. You probably won't even be able to tell you are in Costa Rica. Its all about what you are looking for in a vacation. A special thanks to the receptionist Marcos. You made our wedding and stay there unforgettable.

The grounds of this hotel, set on a hillside are amazing. There are walkways through the forest with its ferns and flowers to the villas which are incredibly private - we saw and heard no one from our huge porch. The villa was large, clean and nicely decorated. The infinity pool is great, as is the location and view from the bar and restaurant. Two negatives: the music and the food. There is music playing ALL THE TIME, and it is the same music piped into the bar, the restaurant, the pool and the spa. It is loud enough to be intrusive, particularly since it is a weird mix of classical symphonies, jazz, new age and pop. It is incredibly annoying on a peaceful morning at breakfast, with an unbelievable view over the Pacific, surrounded by birds, to be assaulted by music. The food is really not good enough, especially given the prices (not outrageous, but meriting better quality) and the fact that they themselves describe it as "exquisite". It is not. It was by far the least interesting food we had in Costa Rica. Most dishes are oversauced with thick sauces that taste commercial and lack flavour. The soups are processed smooth, and have no flavour or texture. There are lots of questionnaires in the restaurant about the service - was it fast, friendly, accurate? - yes, there's one waiter per table - but food seems a secondary consideration. We had such wonderful soups and fish everywhere else we went in Costa Rica. Villa Caletas food was a real disappointment.
