It's always a little hit and miss when you book an excursion in a foreign country. Yes, you can research and read the reviews, hoping to make sure you have ticked every box prior to selecting who to spend your time with. Yet, there is always that risk that the tour is a let down, and you feel like just another tourist on a conveyor belt, passing through their world.
Luckily, Discovery is everything you hope it will be - and a little more.
At the end of the day, you can find lots of horse trekking throughout Costa Rica, and I'm sure they all have wonderful trails, through jungles, waterfalls and other spectacular views. What makes discovery stand out are the people, and more importantly the love they have for the horses and the environment.
As a first time rider, I received a brief five minute lesson from Andrea, one of the owners. She had saved the ranch and horses from what would have been a slow and painful fate, and you could see how much she loved to introduce new people to her family (the horses). At no point did I feel afraid, or out of control, and this is thanks to the excellent coaching from Andrea and Liana, and a group of horses who were just happy to escort you around the forest.
The trek itself was very pleasant, a few hours of walking through beautiful landscape and a chance to really enjoy nature. Liana was incredibly passionate about the environment and was constantly pointing out various things, from animals to vegetation with a smile on her face. During the trek, there was one stop-off, a chance to enjoy a natural spring, and apply a coat of volcanic mud! It was a very fun experience and a chance to bond with some of the other guests in a very peaceful, quiet, setting.
I'm not a big horse riding person, and turned up with the expectation of getting through the trek...in the end, I loved every minute of it, and would happily go there again.
- fantastic owners and employees who genuinely want guests to have a good time, and take extremely good care of the animals
- a great selection of treks, taking into account all levels of ability and with horses who seem very content
- an experience that is fun for all, from beginners, all the way through to experienced riders
- a 30 minute journey off the beaten track, on dirt tracks
