“Fascinating, friendly, relaxing.”
Reviewed March 28, 2010

A wonderfully peaceful and relaxing holiday in a beautiful and fascinating place. Thanks to Harvey, Paulina, Balto and Gatto, we felt at home, as if we were staying with friends rather than in a resort. The sounds, sights, and smells of the forest and ocean are wonderful, so that even just sitting by the shore is delightful. Kayaking and other boat trips and excursions were a lot of fun, and the swimming is great (if you can stand 30C (86F) water!). The local fruit and exotic juices were a real treat. Paulina, her grandchildren, and everyone else we met were patient as one of us practised speaking Spanish. The flight from San Jose in a small plane is also fun, and Harvey makes the transfer from and to the airport in Golfito easy. Altogether a delightful holiday.

Saladero was fantastic in every way, we loved it. From the moment we got onto Harvey's boat for the ride up the coast to Saladero the wow factor kicked in. The landscape is gorgeous & the smell of the forest from the boat just gets you relaxed before you even get there. We stayed in the tree house which was brilliant fun & saw toucans & hummingbirds outside every morning ( bring headtorches ). The Beach house looks really nice & we are already planning to come back ASAP to stay there with all the family. Harvey looks after you in such a nice way , you instantly feel welcome & completely at home & because of his warm nature all the staff are really friendly too, a really happy atmosphere pervades the whole place. The food is excellent & all so fresh ( Don't miss out on the banana pancakes for breakfast ! ) Harvey taught our daughter to fish & we ate our catch for supper ! now she is mad keen & I will have to buy rods & tackle to use at home. Don't miss out on the trips, they are really good fun & very interesting, we did something different every day for 8 days but still found time to chill out in the hammocks under the trees in the afternoon . Don't worry about bugs, just put some repellent below the knee for the invisible ones, there were no mossies at all when we were there.
If you have read this review & I reccomend you book right now, because the moment I have earned enough money to return I am going to beat you to it !!!
ps
If you have to stopover in san Jose try www. Hotel Brilla Sol.com its Tico & very friendly, clean plus free pick up & drop off at airport. If you want a trip out of san Jose or a lift to Pavas for Nature for Nature Air flights I reccomend [--] [--] he speaks good english & will look after you really well.

We stayed for 6 days at Saladero an there was no boaring moment. The peaceful surrounding, the nice people, the great hospitality, the spectacular view and the great food were overwhelming! A nice combination of the adventure of being in the middle of nature and the restful feeling to be at home. We are so very grateful we have found this place and we will be back next time!!!!

We took the decision to go to Saladero because it was the only nice while reasonably priced hotel in the area. Costa Rica has become really expensive and is not easy to find something like this. We arrived in Golfito, and there was already Harvey (the owner) waiting for us to take us on a 40 minutes boat ride to Saladero. The trip is wonderful, the view of the coast is unbeatable and we saw dolphins two meters away from our boat! We know Costa Rica very well, but this area is absolutely hidden. If you don't like touristy places this is it!
When we arrived we found the house and garden both beautiful, clean and quiet. The house is perfect for a couple with children (one large living room with toilet and a separate room with bathroom as well). Besides that there is a nice cabin hidden in the forest, good for young couple (because there are some stairs) . Harvey (the owner) is great, he's funny, very helpful and just great company. There's also Paulina who, together with Harvey, cooks like an angel!!! We also met Chepe, a wild Turkey who acts like a dog and just hated my husband.
This place is a paradise, also for fishermen (Harvey can take you out to catch your own dinner!). We don't fish but we enjoyed walking on the beaches (take water-shoes because the beaches have stones), kayaking and just reading in the hammocks, eating and playing cards at night. It's just a perfect place to relax and forget about the world!!!!

We returned for our second visit in two years with our brother-in-law and his fishing buddy. Between the three fishermen who kayak fished, typically within eye view of Saladero, they caught 27 different species of fish--they flyfished, standing on top of the kayaks in the calm morning waters, at other times, they used lures and also bait. They had a wonderful time! Harvey both deliciously and graciously prepared the grouper, snapper, conch, lobster or whatever the boys thought should be saved and prepared.
The fresh eggs and fruits from the property were also incredibly savory.
My highlight was going with Harvey to the nearby one-room schoolhouse, where he was taking pictures to send to others regarding some of the needs of the school, such as old laptops, etc. There are three students and a delightful teacher. It was so eye-opening to see what they were doing with so little!
We truly love the friendliness and freedom of Saladero! It definitely was more like visiting family than going to a resort.
There were times when we had internet access at no additional charge.
I look forward to our return and trying out Harvey's pizza made from his new pizza oven!

If the idea of an isolated untrampled jungle environment hits your spot, then look no further. My wife and I have been regular travellers for over thirty years and didn't believe a place of such untouched beauty still existed anymore.
From the moment we arrived Harvey the owner, ever smiling Frank the boatman and Paulina our cook made us feel particulary welcome. We stayed for four nights in the bright and airy bungalow and dined below helping ourselves from the 'honesty bar' a rare provision these days.
The lodge is surrounded by thick jungle clad hills that reverberate to the calls of howler monkeys and birdsong. Early one morning we joined Harvey paddling around the bay for a couple of hours in kayaks searching for a lobster dinner with not another soul to be seen-Magical!
Sadly we did have one regret-having to leave so soon!

A group of 5 travellers( primarily teachers) booked a spring break trip at the Saladero after reading about it on Trip Advisor. Wow, what a find! If you want a wonderful vacation away from the beaten path with local flavor in a tropical paradise, you just found the place. I booked the trip for the group and I felt very responsible for how the vacation might turn out if the Saladero wasn't what it professed to be on the website. Our expectations were more than fulfilled. We were greatly impressed with everything about the Saladero.
When we arrived in the little village of Golfito, there was our host, Harvey, waiting for us to take us in a taxi to his boat for the 30 minute ride to his remote location on the Gulf of Dolce. From the moment we arrived, until we left, we were treated like extraordinary guests with our every wishes met. Harvey took us on a nature walk and botanical tour of his native plants and fruit trees. We were fed 3 delicious meals a day, cooked by a wonderful local woman, Paulina. We snorkled, kayaked, fished, played croquet and soccer...(all of the gear was supplied by Harvey).
The beach house was very comfortable, with great beds and very adequate space for the 5 of us. The food was a combination of local cusine and Harvey's own favorites. The breakfasts were a choice of eggs, pancakes, rice and beans, and cereal. All of them were served with a wide selection of fresh juices from fruit grown on the property. YUM! They went well with the the evening cocktails, too.
As it indicates on the website, Harvey can set-up special tours during your stay, but for our group we only went on a half day canopy zipline tour because we didn't ever want to leave the place. The zipline was great ... nice staff, safe, and ecologically minded.
There were so many other bonuses, like the pet turkey buzzard, (Chippy, that followed us everywhere), Howler Monkeys, Toucans, Parrots, very warm sea water, and average temperatures in the 80's.
Not a bad place to thaw out for five frozen Montanans. If any of this sounds good to you, try the Saladero, you won't be disappointed.
