It's not every trip that you arrive as guests and leave as friends. Owners Harvey and Susan Woodard made our experience at Saladero truly memorable -- one we're already looking forward to repeating next year. Their location is wonderfully remote and surrounded by the natural beauty of the Golfo Dulce and Piedras Blancas National Park, which we enjoyed exploring by kayak, boat, and hiking. The family style meals were delicious, perfect for our family's gluten free needs, and a pleasure to share with Harvey, Susan, and Paulina each day. This is an amazing place with incredibly gracious hosts and is a perfect option for the adventurous traveler who wants to stay off the beaten path. All of the positive reviews here are accurate -- it's hard to say enough about this place!

We have stayed at Saladerro twice, for one week last year and two weeks this year. For people that love nature and outdoor activities this place is outstanding. Add in the friendly hosts, Susan and Harvey and you quickly realize this place is as special as all the rave reviews say. We find the location is perfect for wildlife viewing with lots of howler and capuchin monkeys and occasional squirrel monkeys. The birds are amazing, with regular sightings of Scarlet Macaws, Toucans, Frigates, Hawks, Terns, Great Blue Herons, Egrets, Ibis, Gulls, Owls and many more plus a wide array of songbirds that supply a constant jungle surround sound. They have put together a excellent choice of activities to keep you as busy as you want, and in the heat of the day the hammocks can be a welcome respite. I would highly recommend the kayak river /mangrove tour, the botanical garden, horseback and the wonderful chocolate tour, which is very well done. With the free use of kayaks you can get in some good snorkeling to view a wide variety of tropical fish once you find the hot-spots. You never know what is going to appear in the rich Golfo Dulce waters and we were pleasantly surprised, when we least expected it, to encounter dolphins and sea turtles.

Room Tip: The beach house is the most comfortable. The tree house is very secluded, but those steps mean you need to be reasonably fit. The Mariposa is basic but great for being immersed in the sounds of the jungle - 100 yards or so to the nearest bathroom so you should be comfortable with that.

Soladero is a welcome respite from impersonal travel. Harvey and Susan are bright, friendly,
intuitutve hosts who welcome you and help you fine tune your stay so you get the exact blend of activity and tranquility while in paradise, They give you space, guidance or company, depending on your desire.
The property is only available after a 30 minute motor boat ride. Harvey picks you up from the one of the 2 airport towns on the Golfo Dulce, and brings you across the turquoise waters, often accompanied by dolphins to a piece of paradise. They have a wide beach on the shores of the 83 degree waters of the Golfo Dulce. There are lovely grounds with lawns, hammocks and palm trees. At any moment you might see maccaws in pairs flying by or a toucan noisily feeding in the tree top. The howler monkeys begin their roar as they pass by at dawn. Behind the gardens is the rain forest which Harvey will take you through the paths he keeps open with his machete. The birding is great and Harvey and Susan have alot of knowledge to share about the flora and fauna.
Soladero lets you use the kayaks and snorkel gear for no charge and the Golfo Dulce waters are amazingly calm and pristine. Pelicans patrol the surf and the occasional sting ray jumps out of the waters to puntuate the beauty. There are a few coral heads, average snorkeling but it great to be in the water.
Don't miss a kayak trip up the Isquinas River where Susan and Harvey will lead you through small tributaries in the maze of mangrove side waters. Really unique! There are 3 rooms and also grounds for camping. Only interesting people end up at this place.
Meals are home cooked and delicious, lots of fresh fruit, fish often caught that day.. served family style. Arrive a tourist, leave as a friend. Tranquil hospitality with a dash of activities make this a perfect retreat.

Room Tip: The Tree house is secluded and romantic. The Mariposa Cabina is near the jungle so you hear the most monkeys. The 2nd floor guest house has the best water view and gets a great breeze.

We've travelled around Costa Rica and stayed in lots of places, but Saladero is a special, unique place. Here you are in the heart of the jungle and experience a real bit of nature close up. At Saladero you are miles away from anywhere; but it's still very easy to get to. We left our car at the Samoa del Sur hotel and locked up our bags at reception and Harvey picked us up and boated us across the gulf to the lodge. We stayed in the treehouse which means you have forest all around you and is a fantatstic feeling. Food's fantastic, sunsets are amazing and Susan and Harvey look after you perfectly.

This is our 4th trip to the Saladero Lodge. We love it! Instant relaxation. Take an easy shuttle flight into Puerto Jiménez or Golfito, and Harvey & Susan are very friendly and take care of the rest for your entire stay. They pick you up at the dock for a beautiful voyage along the coast to the secluded and safe Saladero Lodge. They have everything available to make your incredible adventure. You make your own adventure - ocean, river or jungle. This is true Costa Rica. Take the meal plan - their cooking is incredible! I enjoy the freedom of the kayak ventures on the peaceful Gulfo Dolce. No additional charge to use the kayaks and total freedom to use whenever you desire! Fishing is a great adventure - trigger fish, bonita, mackerel, pargo, giant rooster fish and jack crevalle. Lots of dolphins all around to enjoy. Lots of monkey and bird sounds everywhere. Accommodations are excellent, very comfortable and the beach house is incredibly spacious! The finished hardwoods are unbelievably beautiful throughout the rooms and dining area. Everything is well maintained and eco-friendly. The new outdoor secluded hot and cold shower is beautiful and lots of fun.
People ask, why go back to the same place 4 times? Experience the beauty and wonder at Saladero and the hospitality of Harvey and Susan and you will have no question in your minds. We have never had any problems on any of our trips. Find it on Google Earth and you will see how far away it is from all the roads and busy city life. Enjoy the peace and unspoiled natural beauty of the Saladero Lodge!

Room Tip: All rooms are great! The beach house is most convenient and very large and our favorite. The new Mariposa room is beautiful and simple. The tree house is secluded.
