We spent four wonderful days at this lodge and found everything outstanding. What was surprising was even the Ticos said prepare for muggy weather and bring insect repellent, but compared to a typical summer day in, say, an Upper Peninsula Michigan, we found Golfo Dulce balmy and relatively insect-free.

Be aware there are plenty of things to bite you here but that's why you're going to an eco-lodge, right?

The staff was very friendly. Here's a shout out to Joe -- very funny with an infectious laugh and Eric who helped with our luggage at the boat dock even when he was on his way to the doctor.

Great food, interesting side tours, lot's of wildlife right on the grounds. Get up before dawn to see the most activity.

Be sure to kayak over to the snorkel beach. The snorkeling is only fair but the beach is one of the most beautiful places I have ever been.

Dolphins escorted us on the short boat ride to the resort. It was seriously like walking into the garden of eden and our escorts pointed out plants and bugs and fun stuff on the way to the lodge. We arrive late afternoon and were thrilled that they had a wonderful lunch waiting for us. This was all in the first hour...and it never ended. The staff was amazing and owners were gracious. I saw snacks, monkeys and waterfalls that take your breath away. I went during the rainy season and was basically never dry. Pack lots of changes of clothes because they will never dry once wet. It was magical, go.

We went to Nicuesa for 6 mights this month with our two young adult daughters. We stayed in a beautiful 2 bedroom cabin, ate delicious meals, drank first rate coffee, took exciting and well executed trips, practiced yoga, had massages, relaxed with the warm staff and the interesting guests.

What was most notable for us was the ease and comfort as a result of the excellent staff. We aren't that comfortable with people doing things for us but the staff at Nicuesa is so mellow and attentive we felt comfortable enjoying all the service they provided. The guides were great, the food fantastic and fresh. Whenever a guest had a good catch fishing, the kitchen staff prepared it for us to share. When they learned that our 21 year old daughter was about to have a birthday, they baked a beautiful cake on our last evening. They were available at all times but never intrusive.

The setting is incomprable. Set back from the beautiful Golfo Dulce, we were surrounded by fragrant rain forest, beautiful flowers, all manner of wildlife. If you enjoy ease, adventure and beauty, coupled with good food and friendship, you won't be disappointed.

We were looking for a family Christmas getaway that would be an adventure and a time to just enjoy one another's company. Wow! This was a dream that came true! From the minute we arrived at the little airport where we were met with smiles and welcomes from Felipe and Catherine, to the sad moment when we left, every single moment of our stay was magical. The surroundings are stunning, and if you want to escape completely, this is the place to do it! The main lodge reminded us of a wonderful tree house, and a hub of activity for meals, planning excursions & activities and mixing with good company. We loved our cabin.... a getaway on its own, and more than spacious and comfortable enough for our family of four adults. Beds are comfy, loved the deck with hammock chairs, the bathroom great and awesome outdoor shower. Going to sleep listening to the rainforest noises was incredible. Meals were delicious and the staff were good about remembering that two of us did not like fish. We hiked and explored with Natio and Felipe who pointed out so many amazing things, we kayaked, we snorkeled, we did a canopy tour which we got to by boat captained by Thomas...and en route were surrounded by about 50 dolphins! We did yoga, we had massages, both in the most tranquil setting imaginable. We loved meeting up with the other guests at mealtimes and hearing their stories, and enjoyed having the wonderful staff join us as well...it really is a very special close knit atmosphere, and nothing was ever a problem, all requests met with a smile. Words of wisdom: really pay attention to the "what to pack" list. We did, and it proved invaluable. We will always remember this vacation which rates as one of our top favorites of all time... A big statement from a globe trotting family!

Had high hopes. Setting is beautiful. Cottages are wonderful. Birds are plenitful and other wildlife spotting is nice. The happy hour is relaxing and we got some great special drinks. We read the other reviews and wish we had given more credence to the negative reviews. What we found was that it truly depended on which "group" of staff you had. I struggled between rating this a 2 or a 3. Decided on 3 as it is dead center.
When we arrived, the staff seemed pleasant, knowledgeable and could cook; although the food was never great. Then the staff started to change and it went all down hill. The food was often overcooked and the sauces so sweet, they were hard to choke down. The new guides were doing it by rote and did not seem to be aware of their surroundings. Unfortunatley through the entire trip we had to deal with the hosts: Fake hospitality, always ringing their own bell, and seemed to only be inerested in the almighty dollar. We worked hard to keep smiles on our faces so that the whole vacation would not be ruined.
If you are on your honeymoon and only want to sit around in an absolutely beautiful environment, you will probably be safe as all will seem wonderful. If you are an seasoned traveller or want to really experience the surroundings, I think that you will do better elsewhere. Maybe all the ecolodges in the Costa Rican rainforest are the same, it just didn't match up to our experiences in other similar settings elsewhere in the world.

We stayed for 4 nights at Playa Nicuesa in May and it completely exceeded our expectations. I knew I wanted to go to Costa Rica and specifically the rainforest but didn't know much else about bookings and how to go about planning a trip there. But Playa Nicuesa made it pretty easy and actually a lot of fun! We flew Nature Air to Puerto Jimenez from San Jose and the lodge picked up us at the airport. It was a 5 minute drive and they then water taxi-ed us to the Lodge. The managers of the hotel greeted us off the boat and gave us frozen delicious drinks! Basically from there, we had 4 awesome days of hiking, dolphin watching, fishing, kayaking, relaxing and great food. It was super easy and they have the nicest, most genuine staff who actually feel like good friends. I loved the family style of eating and the main part of the lodge was beautiful (as the rest of the lodge)! Most of the reviews will comment on the good food and it definitely was really good food. Who knew! The only thing I would note is the time of year you go (we went at the beginning of rainy season but it only rained like 2 hours a day in the afternoons) and the fact that it's nature (so there are animals and bugs and that sort of thing). If you're looking for a nice rainforest experience that is pretty easy, this is a great option!
