“An interesting place to stay in a less tourist area”
Reviewed April 1, 2014

We visited here for two nights, one outgoing and one incoming as part of a round Costa Rica tour as it was close to the border. The room we stayed in was excellent with a comfortable bed, a lot of space and a good bathroom shower area. Interestingly the building is open to the bay and comprises a large bar in the centre with the rooms arranged round the side. The rooms have a large one way window that enables you to look over the bar area and marina without them seeing you, a little bit freaky at first but after going out a few times to check it becomes OK and there are curtains as well.

The place was quite relaxed and most of the people there were seafairers who had come in by very expensive boat, only a few of the rooms seemed occupied. The town of Golfito is an interesting place, perhaps more real Costa Rica than the more tourist locations we visited and all the more fascinating for that. We did go on a trip that was a bit of a disaster but the lodge weren't responsible for that so we cant complain, but there are things to do locally and there seemed to be big game fishing from the marina if that's your thing.

Overall this was a friendly place with nice rooms and some interesting things locally. A little expensive for the location but the rooms were appropriate to the price.

Room Tip: all rooms appeared the same to us, maybe ask for one closer to the bay,

It could be the overall vibe of Golfito, but we found it difficult to find helpful people in the area. We arrived at the dock by water taxi and although we had a made a reservation online, it felt like they didn't have a system in place to check on current reservations. We finally found someone to ask and he looked confused like they weren't expecting us and then came back with a key and put us in a room next to the bar where fisherman are sitting outside our window and can look in. The room and bed were comfortable, there was AC which was great but then in the middle of the night the condensation from the AC collected on the ceiling and dripped on the tile floors all night creating puddles and keeping me awake. It was fine for a quick one-night stay but not sure it was worth $99. The bartender Alonzo was awesome and took care of us when we wanted drinks. For a mom/daughter duo, not sure this was the best place for us to stay.

Estimados amigos,

Cordialmente,

Friends had recommended the Fish Hook Hotel when they knew I was going to the duty free zone to go shopping. When we arrived at the hotel it doesn't look like much from the street but you walk through the restaurant and bar then see the dock with the boats. The restaurant is open air and overlooking the beautiful marina/bay. There are 6 rooms that line the sides of the restaurant, 3 on each side. The two rooms on the back side have the bay view. The rooms have gorgeous carved wood doors and beautiful wood throughout the room and bath. The beds are very comfortable with air conditioning. I would request extra pillows next time though. The restaurant/bar at the hotel had good food and cold drinks. The only inconvenience was the night I was there they had karaoke. It did end by 11:00 pm but the music is just outside the rooms. You will receive a must better price by calling the hotel (506-2775-1624) than I did when I checked online. All in all it was a nice visit and I will definitely stay there on my next visit to Golfito.

Room Tip: I would definitely choose the ocean view again.

Most travelers will arrive on their yacht. If you are traveling from San Jose by bus, it is a six to eight hour trip. The flight from San Jose on Sansa or NatureAir Is about 45 minutes.

While there look into a trip to the Corcovado preserve on the Osa penninsula or Cano Island.

Charter fishing boats are available.
