i have never before thought of myself as the camping "type". rafiki lodge changed all that. it puts you literally in the middle of costa ricas amazing wildlife without sacrificing creature comforts. the staff could not have been any kinder or more hospitable. a great place to break out of your comfort zone.

We spent 4 nights at Rafiki this past February as a couple on our 2nd three week visit to Costa Rica. Rafiki is an 800 acre property nestled in the mountains 35 minutes from the main road. Staff provide transportation to the lodge. The scenery is amazing. The tents you "camp" in are South African Safari style meaning 5 star camping (our kind) complete with beds, other furnishings and a large lovely tiled bathroom, not to mention your own beautiful wooden deck just outside your tent. Other than nature's sounds, it is very peaceful. The staff are very kind and accommodating. The food is very good and satisfying. We did white water rafting which was exciting but not too scary like we have experienced in other places years ago (and we are 74 and 57). We did a horse back ride through the woods to a high look out place and enjoyed an amazing view of Rafiki, the river and surrounding jungle and villages in the distance. Rafiki would especially be an amazing place for families as any kid who would be bored here does not deserve to go on family vacation.

The owners of Rafiki Safari Lodge have taken a great idea and made it better. South African safari tents perched on platforms overlooking positively serene natural surroundings AND modern bath facilities. From the moment we arrived, we felt completely transported into the jungle that we have sought to find in Costa Rica. While the excitement of nearby Manuel Antonio and laid-back atmosphere of Dominical are only a short drive away, this magical lodge is a perfect getaway for anyone who can appreciate the natural beauty of Costa Rica and the eco-conscious means by which this intimate resort operates. Delicious food (all-inclusive), gracious hosts, and the sounds of nature all make this truly the most interesting and relaxing retreat in all of Costa Rica. There is no city noise, buses or motorbikes going here and there. All one can hear are the sounds nature. Go to sleep hearing the frogs and cicadas, wake up to the songs of exotic birds. In a word, heaven! Whitewater rafting on the cleanest river in Central America with local, well-informed local guides, professional massage in the open air, and interesting dinner conversation all added to the personal feel of our stay at this unique resort. If you want a truly transformative experience which you will not soon forget, visit Rafiki. I will definitely find a reason to go back, and soon.

Room Tip: Tents one and two offer great views, but there are no bad views

When we booked at Rafiki we knew nothing about the experience we were about to have except that it looked cool on the internet. In a million years we could not have expected how incredibly magical our trip to Rafiki would be. With 2 small kids (age 5) and one older (age 12) we were just crossing our fingers that we could all find something to do that we loved. Turns out that Loki and the staff at Rafiki knew exactly what we should be doing. River rafting in the gentle rapids of the nearby river, horse back riding, kid friendly hikes to nearby waterfalls, and the NEVER to be forgotten super fast water slide and naturally heated spa were exactly what we wanted! . Loki personally escorted us on our tours and IT MADE IT SO EASY AND RELAXING. Loki knew what to say, when to say it, and magically everyone was relaxed, smiling and so comfortable. He is very knowledgeable and humble. Both qualities that shine through in everyone at Rafiki.
As for the adults, the atmosphere is inviting, sexy, and relaxing...the bar and lodge area have unimaginable views, and THE FOOD IS DEEEEELIOUSIOUS and plentiful. I got up and did yoga pool side in the am and was in complete bliss (and was not bothered by a soul!) . I don't have enough wonderful things to say about this amazing, BEAUTIFUL, place. For all of you that are on the fence, all I can say is that you will be missing out if you choose not to go...
We will be back for our cooperate retreat next year!
Pura Vida.

The Rafiki Safari Lodge was the highlight of our Costa Rican vacation. Do not miss the opportunity to visit for a night or two. The spectacular and intimate setting in the Savegre Valley and the ambience of the lodge were delightful surprises at the end of our daylong hike through the valley. The beautifully designed luxury tent cabins immersed us in the sounds of surrounding wildlife during the night and early morning hours. The tents cabins were clean, comfortable and spacious. Lautjie, the biologist lodgekeeper, met us midday and hiked with us to the lodge during the second half of our hike, sharing with us the history of his family's development of the property and their efforts to help the local people and create a Tapir preserve. Lautjie's wife, Mauren, and all the staff were extremely welcoming, friendly and attentive. Dinner on the deck of the lodge overlooking the Savegre Valley was spectacular and delicious. Lautjie's secret recipe for South African sausage (beef with spices) was excellent. We capped off our visit the following morning with a white water rafting trip down the Savegre River led by Lautjie and other local rafting guides. In the words of our guide, Randall, "pura vida." So true.

Rafiki white water rafting was the highlight of our entire trip in Costa Rica!!!! What I didn't know when I had our hotel in Manual Antonio book this adventure is that Rafiki is an amazing Eco lodge in itself... and someplace I would definitely stay on my next trip to Costa Rica. So do the right thing, book an overnight in their Safari Lodge and you will have an superb experience that includes amazing accommodations, great food, fantastic staff and family members, horseback riding and the funnest white water rafting you'll ever do!!!!
Roberto was our raft guide, and not only was he skilled at guiding the raft, but fun, fun, fun! I took 2 "drinks" in the Rio Savegre, and neither time was I scared, because Loki (one of the owners) made sure that everyone was aware of all safety procedures and what to do if you end up in the River. I am now a proud member of the Savegre "swim team" and have written in the special book at the lodge dedicated to those who end up in the river while rafting!.
The trip takes all day if you are coming in from town...they pick you up, feed you breakfast at the lodge, deck you out in your gear, boats and the fun starts. Half way through, lunch is served under a covered "patio" in the middle of the jungle, and there's a bathroom there too! Thank you, momma Raylene, for this extra touch! Us old gals appreciated this bonus feature.
As you're rafting down the extremely clean river, you see all sorts of wonderful birds and animals... plus a stop at an amazing waterfall for fantastic photo ops is just another great perk. At the end of the trip, the photo guide, who seems to shoot a zillion pictures of you while you're rafting, shows a slide show for all to re-live the fun again... and also see your face as your about to flip out of the boat! What a scream.
I would say the average age of the 12 people (three boats worth) on this trip was 45 to 50, so you don't have to be a youngster to have one of the most fun adventures of your life! This is a first class experience and worth every penny! Pura Vida
