“Our stay was amazing!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 28, 2013

Turtle Beach Lodge was one of our favorite stops on our tour with Pacific Trade Winds Tour Agency. The remoteness of the lodge, reached by boat on many beautiful canals added to the mystique of the jungle. We absolutely loved the screens in our rooms instead of glass windows, the howler monkeys in the trees outside our room, the beautiful grounds and marina, the sound of the waves on the nearby beach, the closeness and constant sounds of the jungle. We enjoyed the relaxing “turtle” pool, liked the varied food offered, and yes, took advantage of the dial up internet to reach our family. The canoes and kayaks were fun, the jungle walk introduced us to many birds and insects, and we developed a wonderful camaraderie with a French family that we plan on continuing. Visiting Tortuguero was truly a unique jungle experience and one we will never forget and will continue to encourage our friends and family to experience as well.

Room Tip: All the rooms are pretty much the same except for the number of beds. The rooms on the end have more...

Turtle Beach Lodge is smack in the middle of the jungle. 1 hour boat ride from the mainland. Then on through a tight cano (canal) to reach the Lodge itself. The place has impeccable landscaping with flowers, trees and interesting insects abound. There were less birds than we would have thought and only spotted the howler monkeys on our 2nd day. The beach is deserted and I dragged myself a chair and read quite peacefully for a couple of hours without a single soul appearing. The water is not cold but it is not recommended to go into the water due to the undertow. We were part of a tour group and did a few tours through the canos and you really feel like you're in the jungle. If they were row boats/canoes instead of motorboats, the impression would be unrivaled. Although we did see birds, iguanas and a few red frogs we had thought that the wildlife would be much more plentyful (but hey it's not a zoo). A few reviewers mentioned the need for insect repellant but even though I'm usually very intolerant of biting insects I found none to speak of even after a pretty deep jungle tour (1hour).

As far as the lodge goes, I tend to agree with another reviewer that this was by far the most rustic of places we stayed. However, the rooms although spartan were clean if a little lacking in lighting (which we found in almost all the hotels in CR). Don't expect facecloths nor any other fancy amenities. Beds were comfy - pillows not so much. Windows are screened but have no glass so you're right out there in the jungle and from what others in our group mentioned, even by closing the curtains, everyone could see you (a bit like when you turn on a light in a tent). But we luckily had the last room (hut #421) and therefore never closed the curtains as no path went past our room. And yes, do expect to see some insects, the rooms are not airtight.

Hard to evaluate value as we paid for a full tour and do not know the prices of individual hotels. Buffet meals were Ok and very similar to most places we ate in CR (surprisingly, the breakfast oatmeal was one of the best I ever had and not something I usually eat in any restaurant). People were friendly enough and we had many opportunities to practice our Spanish. In my opinion not a place to come for the food nor the accommodations but you will be thrilled with the environment and nature. If I were rating strictly the food/accommodations I wouldn't give it more than a 3.

We loved the place and had perfect weather but I think the season you choose to visit might have a significant impact on your overall impression (quantity of humidity, insects, rain).

We recently stayed at Turtle Beach Lodge on a tour arranged by Kensington Tours. Although the rooms are pretty basic, the accommodations fit the environment perfectly. Service and food were wonderful. We had an incredible guide named Manuel who led an early morning tour down the canals and was able to spot numerous birds, monkeys, etc - even an anteater. He also guided us in the jungle where he spotted all sorts of interesting animals, flora & fauna. Manuel was great.

Positives - Excellent remote location, tons of wildlife, very sweet staff, very comfy basic accommodations (large rooms, comfy beds, but not fancy in any way, mesh and curtains on windows, no glass, jungle is so loud - just like a white noise machine - allows for peaceful sleep) nice pool, basic, but very tasty food, empty gorgeous beaches. Rooms with 3 beds allow for larger families.
Negatives - beach has harsh waves, no good for swimming. Could use more deserts during dinner, even though what was offered was excellent:)) Early morning boat ride was really not worth waking up at 5:30 for - no more animals at that time, then during the day. Internet is dial-up at best, do not even attempt - nothing but frustration.
Would definitely recommend.

We stayed for 3 days, and did enjoy an extra day by the pool and watching the spider monkeys pass through in the afternoon.
After being picked up in San Jose, we collected the rest of our group and made our way to Turtle Beach Lodge. We stopped for breakfast at a restaurant with one a nice butterfly garden.
On the trip to Tortoguero, we already saw a bit of wildlife, but over the next few days, we were not disappointed. We had a fantastic tour guide, who is a biologist (Fernando) who was a wealth of information.
The food at the lodge is buffet style – it was good, not haute cuisine, but you are in a jungle lodge here. Our room (105) was clean and we had a nice, spacious bathroom.
Kayak and Kanu rental is included in the price.
The staff is fantastic ! So friendly and accommodating, helpful and nice.

Our goal adventures tour spent three nights here. It was here we saw the most wildlife of the entire trip, boat and on a hike. The lodge grounds are lovely especially the pool area. The food was very good, typical Costa Rician fare well prepared. The rooms were simple but spacious. I loved waking up to the howler monkeys. It really felt like you were far from my it all.

I spent two nights in this beautiful place. The staff are very friendly, and the local food is really good. Apart from the fact that our toilet got occasionally blocked and that the juice they serve tasted pretty synthetic, I was really happy at this place. The tours they offer are great for wildlife spotting, and their boat drivers really know what they are doing.
