“Good lodge but run down, old needs major upgrade”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 30, 2013

We stayed at this lodge as part of Caravan recently. The lodge is good for the jungle type setting. The cabins are run down old and in need of major upgrade. By that I mean not cable TV, Phone and AC but basic necessary things like Toilets, bedding, clean bathroom sinks, mosquito nets, room safe in working order etc. The windows only has screens, no glass window so everyone outside hear everything and viceversa. Safes dont work, you have to rely on little key, to me I guess any other key might open it, so be careful. You dont expect to get good night sleep, noise outside of people walking by on pathways, monkeys creating a ruckus early morning, masquitos and Gaekos all over. We even found Gaeko dropping on our bed or who know may be rat. I complained about that, safe & people smoking outside, no help at all. That is a bad customer service. Food in dining room so so, nothing to write home, some items were served cold. Not much positive to say even if I try hard. Try it out, you are out for a adventure anyways. For sure was expecting better from our tour company here in tortuguero. With all said, I think in this part of bay there may not be too many choices available so I'd give one more star.

We recently stayed at Pachira Lodge as part of a Caravan.com tour of Costa Rica during March 21 , 22.

The experience was wonderful at the time, as was the rest of the tour but unfortunately a theft incident occurred at this property that left quite a few people, including ourselves, shocked in disbelief.

Personally speaking we knew that we had misplaced $40 from our money in the room safe immediately after returning from our boat trip out from the lodge, but we thought better about making a fuss about it.

In casual conversation though a few days later on the tour it transpired quite a few others had had the same issue. In fact, at least 9 other people we spoke to had lost exactly $40 from their room safe during our 2 night stay at Pachira Lodge. .

Our tour director didn't seem to want to make a big issue out of what had happened. Maybe she was too embarrassed to ask the other half of the bus, I dunno. Guess we'll never really know the true scale of what actually happened.
Most people don't want to make an issue out of a situation like this and neither did we. The whole tour was having a really good time and nobody likes being a party pooper right?

But anyway. Please be aware.

If you stay at Pachira Lodge then please do not use your room safe if you value your belongings.

They are key operated and they are most definitely NOT "SAFE". That is a proven fact.

Stayed at Pachira Lodge, Tortuguero as part of a package tour. The grounds are gorgeous, and the views from our room and balcony were wonderful. You are truly "in the jungle" when you stay there. Saw incredible wildlife and the vegetation and flowers were breathtaking. Staff were helpful and friendly, room clean. Food excellent and plentiful. It poured rain for most of our 3-day visit, which was frustrating, but you can use umbrellas, ponchos, and boots courtesy of the Lodge, so really helped. Only complaint was the condition of canal boats---on the trip out to the lodge from land, our boat broke down 3 times: not a pleasant or confidence-boosting start to our trip! Pachira Lodge needs to invest in better motors: it was a little scary and added quite a bit more time to an already exhausting long trip to get from San Jose to Tortuguero! Would have been 5-star excellent rating if not for the lousy condition of boat motors.

Room Tip: Being upstairs gives better vegetation views

Stayed here for two nights during a Costa Rican tour. Accessed via boat from mainland - a great journey up the river, with lots of wildlife on the way. A great place for exploring the fabulous rain forest, full of Howler monkeys, (alarm clock not required !!) iguana, birds, and a few not so welcome creatures . Deet spray recommended at all times. Lovely setting beside the river. the hotel has its own river boats, perfect for exploring by day and night. Wooden lodges, linked by shady walkways, and a fabulous pool a bonus.
I enjoyed the food - very traditional Costa Rican diet, but reasonable variety.
Rooms basic, but quite adequate. Shower a little basic, but worked OK. Beds clean and adequate. Might be too basic for some, but I find the lodges similar to the one I stayed in the Borneo Rain forest, so not a surprise. Had air con.
There is a nice outdoor bar area with local "calypso" band. Even has WiFi hot spot.
Not 5 star, but I didnt expect 5 star.

Room Tip: All rooms pretty well the same, in blocks of four. Some were two story, but not mine.

We were really looking forward to this part of our trip and we were not disappointed! The journey up the river was just a foretaste of the early morning boat trip to see the wildlife in the canals - we saw lots of birds, monkeys, a caiman, crocodile and even an anteater high up in the trees. Being somewhere so remote and peaceful was a great experience and a trip to the village interesting - we loved the gaily painted schools! The dining room was amazing with a wonderful buffet and exotic flower arrangements - even the serviettes were made to look like birds. Julio made our time at Pachira so special - from collecting us at Guapiles, right through our stay until our transfer back to Guapiles. Being with him on the trail walks and on the water was an education in itself and we really enjoyed being with him. Howler monkeys? - all part of this wonderful place!

We stayed at the Pachira for a couple of nights - part of a tour - the tour was fantastic - really enjoyable. Whilst the surrondings were really lovely (back to nature) I am not sure I could have stayed any more nights. The food was a bit samey but pefectly good food. The rooms were a bit too basic for my liking but adequate for the time you were in them. Having said the negatives the positives made up - the trips, the nature, the wildlife etc were really good - would doit all again. When we moved on we were picked up in a boat and took literally 5 minutes away to the airport where we boarded a 14 seater plane back to San Jose. The guides and staff were very helpful.
A really good experience.

We wound up at the Pachira Lodge on a Caravan tour of Costa Rica. Our individual cabins were clean, moist, (very moist) and simple. The lighting was quite poor making reading inside impossible. The windows are screened but not glazed so the Howler monkeys living above in the dense forest serve at natural alarms. One night during a storm, they were particularly agitated and noisy. Roofs are tin and anything falling on them is quite noisy. A bit like camping out? Food is served buffet style with nice breakfasts. There is a coffee bar set up all day as well as a free wi-fi area near reception. Obviously no phones, television, a/c, although the cabins do have ceiling fans. You get a real feel for the rain forest. Reached via a 90 minute boat ride(covered). We found the village across the lagoon to be very depressing and overpriced.
