“The best of both worlds - nature + comfort”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 20, 2013

Between the boat rides to and from the lodge and the various canal safaris, you spend a lot of time on the water here, and that is part of the charm of this place. You really do feel as though you have escaped from the world, especially out on the water looking for wildlife, and yet all the essential comforts are provided for. It is a good place to rediscover the virtues of the simple life. Rooms are spacious and clean, with towels folded in the shape of kissing swans to greet you. The ceiling fan is sufficient for keeping you comfortable, and at night it gets cool enough to turn it off. It's a treat to sleep with the sounds of the rainforest and the very distant Caribbean in the background. Cicadas whirr through the night, and howler monkeys will wake you up around 5:30. In our forays back and forth on boats and around the beautifully planted property, we saw tiger herons, green ibises, anhinga chicks, a sungrebe, a hummingbird nest, northern jacanas, an owl butterfly, a pit viper, and many monkeys, as well as numerous North American migrant herons. Butterfies and hummingbirds were plentiful. The pool is lovely. We were surprised by how few bugs there were, but there had been very little rain at the time we were here (even in the rainforest!) so perhaps it is not always so bug-free. If you are not a birder, you might not want to make the effort to come all the way out here when the sea turtles are not laying their eggs, but I would have been happy to stay here much longer.

Torteguero is a funny old place. You are fairly limited on lodging options due to the boat access but if you end up at Pachira Lodge you will have a great time. It is well place opposite Torteguero village and in close proximity to all the waterways you need to be taken down on the boat safaris. The lodge rooms themselves are very basic .... don't expect any luxuries or TV .... but the grounds are beautifully planted and complement the surrounding jungle perfectly. It is also teeming with bird life ... you'll hardly need to walk 10 yards to spot something new.

The staff are fairly friendly, and the experience will be dictated in full by the quality of your guide, which varies from amazing to average. The food is a standard buffet and certainly isn't the highlight but the bar is well stocked, and reasonable considering you are a captive audience. The pool is also good, and loungers are easy to come by. All in all, a lovely place to spend a couple of nights in a wonderful setting.

As part of a Caravan Tour, my wife and myself stayed at the Aninga Lodge in the heart of Tortuguero National Park. It can only be reached by boat and is carved out of the rainforest.
The lodge consists of a main building (registration, sitting area, and dining room), pool area (bar located here too), and a series of cabins and walkways ( all raised on pilings). The cabins sleep two comfortable and have private bathrooms. There is no air-conditioning, but a large ceiling fan moves the air well. Being carved out of nature, you are surrounded by nature. From our cabin, we saw numerous birds, a two-toed sloth, howler monkeys (who give you your morning wake-up call), and lizards. This is the sister lodge to the Pachira Lodge which is close-by and connected with raised walkways. The food was acceptable although not remarkable. A friendly staff.

Room Tip: No really bad rooms.

Accommodation is basic but very very comfortable and superbly maintained. The location is beautiful with nature right outside your lodge complete with Howler monkeys as your early morning alarm call! However the food was good but whatever was served for lunch was exactly what was served for dinner. Staff helpful and sympathetic to the Eco system.

I was a bit worried about staying in these basic accommodations but had a fine time. The grounds are beautiful..

We stayed here two nights on our Caravan tour. There were no bugs in our cabin. We might have seen a mosquito or two between 6 and 7 pm but that was no big deal.

We enjoyed the peace of the jungle and did not have too much rain. It only rained at night.

We appreciate the free wifi area near the reception desk where we could check on things at home. Washcloths were not supplied so we were glad we packed some.

We highly recommend Aninga Lodge!

We were lucky to stay for two nights in Pachira lodge. We stayed in a four room cabin with a wide gallery and connecting paths. We were welcomed by a group of howling monkeys that were less curious to see us that we were to see them! playing in our roof. They also served as our wakeup call the next morning. Deep in the jungle, comfortable and quiet with jungle sounds. Screen only in the windows let you feel as if you are outside while very safe from mother nature elements. Food was very good for a jungle lodge. Guides and service was great.
Damp, wet and or humid...wet jungle at its best

We stayed for two nights at the Pachira Lodge. The setting and grounds were lovely and the Lodge is nestled in the rainforest with its own dock to the lagoon. Yes, the cottages are a little "rustic" but we didn't come to Costa Rica for luxury...we came to experience the country and its amazing variety of nature. You can only get to the lodge by boat or airplane (we came by boat and the trip down the river was a lot of fun and we saw a lot of wildlife). Most cottages are a unit of 4 per building with several rocking chairs on the wrap-around deck. We travelled in January and heat wasn't a problem for us (they do have ceiling fans). I would agree about noises from neighbors being an issue - we certainly didn't mind hearing the jungle noises and birds...but heard far too much about the personal lives of fellow travellers next door.
The Lodge gives you free water so we never worried about "tummy-troubles" (they have the big 5-gallon containers and your refill your small water bottles). We also had nightly gin and tonics and were told that the ice was from purified water as well....I'm guessing they were right because we didn't have any problem. Food was very good - all buffet style.
