Owner description: This park contains 11 different ecological habitats and is a sanctuary for nesting sea turtles. Situated on the Northern Caribbean side of Costa Rica, in the province of Limon, it is approximately 90 miles northeast of the capital city of San José. Accessible only by air or water, Tortuguero is the most important nesting site in the entire western half of the Caribbean for the green turtle. It is known as “Tico Amazon” (Costa Rican Amazon) due to the fact that in Tortuguero there are no roads; the principle means of transportation being the dozens of fresh water canals throughout the park.

We did a jungle walk and a canoe tour which lasted about four or fine hours in total. The guide was great, knew exactly where to look for all of the wildlife and knew so much information about everything. His animal impersonations were fantastic too!

Created as a refuge for the Green Sea Turtle, Tortuguero is 60% water and only accessible by boat. It is also though, a large area of secondary forest which provides habitat for an array of wildlife to be seen, both aquatic and land species. The night tour to see the turtles laying eggs and returning to the sea, is not to be missed. Photos are not possible (no flashlights or cameras allowed), but this does not detract from the experience. Our group were lucky enough to find a lone baby turtle during the day, and gave it a safe escort to the sea.

We took several boat tours of the Park and saw so many great creatures. Toucans, Night Herons, Caiman, Howler Monkeys, Sloths, Egrets, Vultures, Morpho Butterflies, etc. If you are there during Sept/Oct, you can book a night turtle tour to see them lay eggs and return to the beach afterward (a rare sight). A great place to see unique animals you won't find elsewhere. They really care about protecting their wildlife here. The entrance fee to ride through the park was $10 US per person.
