Owner description: This park contains 11 different ecological habitats and is a sanctuary for nesting sea turtles. Situated on the Northern Caribbean side of Costa Rica, in the province of Limon, it is approximately 90 miles northeast of the capital city of San José. Accessible only by air or water, Tortuguero is the most important nesting site in the entire western half of the Caribbean for the green turtle. It is known as “Tico Amazon” (Costa Rican Amazon) due to the fact that in Tortuguero there are no roads; the principle means of transportation being the dozens of fresh water canals throughout the park.

If you go to Tortuguero it is a must to see the Tortuguero National Park. You will enjoy all that you see and a boat tour will give you amazing sights of wildlife.

Turtles nesting (pm better) and baby turtles hatching (morning better? cooler). Precious!

Does mean the beach attracts a lot of flies during the hatching season though, so it's not all that nice to lie/sit still on and the rip currents are strong so swimming can be dangerous. Good to walk along the beach though - the markers go up to 55 or so, then you can take a path into the jungle/NP.

Seeing the turtles laying the eggs is a unique experience, well worth the trip. Be aware you can't take pictures of film at the beach, and not even use a flashlight.

We have visited many national parks in Costa Rica but I would recommend the canoe tour (no motor-boat) in Tortuguero River. The sounds, the temperature, the humidity, the animals are best perceived by rowing alone in the river. We did row helping our "captain" Kevin though he was able to do on its own.
