“Pleasant and quiet place in the jungle”
Reviewed April 21, 2005

We had a double room with 1 double bed and 1 single bed, with an en-suite (very good shower) and a fan. Walls were a little on the thin side, but not much of a problem. Rooms were spacious and very clean, and free from mosquitos. There was also a little balcony to sit out on and a water spout for clean water. There's also a nice swimming pool and loungers.

We were full board and the meals were quite nice and substantial. The menu was set, but there was plenty of variety on the plates. The fruit juices were lovely.

Staff were all very friendly and helpful.

On an island away from Tortuguero village, which in my opinion works in its favour! Nice and quiet here.

Howler monkeys woke us up - amazing sound! We saw toucans and hummingbirds around the property. We went on an early morning boat ride (at 6am!) and saw so many birds, mammals, reptiles and insects. It was brilliant!

We went to Jungle Lodge as part of a tour and we were pleasantly surprised with the quality of the accommodation. Recommended.

The lodge itself is pretty nice, although certainly without frills. Having been married for 36 years, it was a bit surprising to find two twin beds instead of one bed for the two of us. As it turned out, I was suffering from dehydration and fatigue; any bed would have been good enough for me. That's kind of the tone of this part of our trip, although there were certainly several positive things to say also.

Our guide, Celimo, was excellent. He was kind, knowledgeable, spoke English pretty well. He was eager for us to have a good time, and he worked hard for all of us. My wife and I both have very high regard for him, as well as for the other men that worked with him.

The trip through the jungle via boat was terrific. Many different kinds of birds and animals were visible (and audible) and we enjoyed this a great deal. This part of our stay made the rest of it worthwhile.

It was interesting to eat our meals as a group. We got to know other people much better than we could have otherwise, and that was a real positive. The food itself was quite good, and there certainly was plenty of it. On the other hand, the lines were long, which was a little tough on tired, hungry people.

The village of Tortuguero was sad and depressing. I don't know why we were encouraged to "tour" it. The Turtle Museum showed a very mediocre video... and nothing else. I'm not sure why we were taken there either.

The pool was very pleasant, but the beach was awful: dirty and littered, with dangerous flotsam in the water and warnings about riptides and sharks. Don't go in the water!
