“Great experience”

Stayed at the place and the service was great, had a super guide. Food was excellent and rooms were nice and clean. The turtle tour is a must as well as the boat tour along the canals. It is a recommendation and as it is low season, there were very few people which made it even better

Tortuguero is probably my favorite place in Costa Rica and I've been fortunate enough to visit on many occasions over the last 25 years. This was however, my first time at Mawamba Lodge and also my first time in Costa Rica during the rainy season. The primary purpose of this visit was to see the Green Turtles laying on the beach and Mawamba is excellently located for this kind of tour as it sits on the spit of land between the canals and the sea. In my experience the accommodations are pretty similar at most of the lodges, that is rustic and fairly basic but for me that is part of the charm. My room was very clean and comfortable with warm water always available in the shower. The food was excellent and all the staff friendly and helpful. Mawamba is nicely laid out with butterfly and frog gardens. The pool area is really nice and great to cool off after a walk or tour. Overall the place has a really nice feel about it and I have no hesitation in recommending it as an excellent place to enjoy Tortuguero. The turtle tours are arranged through local guides and despite being fairly late on in the season, we were lucky enough to see a nesting turtle as well as hatchlings returning to the sea. I never tire of the wonderful wildlife in Tortuguero and hope to return to Mawamba on my next visit.

every aspect of this trip was incredible. from our guide Richard Smith, to the lodge, to the food and other people visiting this beautiful country. One suggestion, if you are not used to the heat and humidity, try to prepare yourself as much as possible. no A/C in the rooms

Room Tip: every room was excellent with a wonderful view and hammocks

The Mawamba lodge was the first place were we stayed during our incredible journey in Costa Rica. The lodges are situated around the the central building and we were lucky to have a lodge near the beach. The lodge was fully equiped with a ceiling fan enough lamps and space to store the lugage and most important the bed was great. The bathroom was what you can expect: a great shower, a sink and toilet. Outside a porch which you share with your neighbours, is equiped with a rocking chair and a hammock. The porch can be reached by a two step stair which can be annoying when you are having difficulties with walking. The swimming pool is nice and big enough to have a decent swim and is illuminated in the night. Towels are being provided and enough seats are available for resting. The restaurant is fine and the variety of food served meets a lot of different tastes. On top of all of this the Gardens are gorgeous with butterflies and colourfull frogs.
The staff is very supportive and flexible although I must say that we stayed here during low season.

Room Tip: Lodge nr 32 is close to the beach and not far from the restaurant and swimming pool

Dear HollandWanderer,
Thank you very much for writing and for taking the time to review and comment on your visit to Mawamba Lodge. We are very happy to hear that you had a nice time in Tortuguero and enjoyed your visit to the area.
September is definitely a great month to come to the Caribbean side of Costa Rica, the weather is lovely here at this time of the year, while its more rainy on the Pacific side and Central Valley. Turtles are out, both in the nesting and the hatchlings, and all in all, a great time to enjoy the Caribbean.
About the two steps to the room, we do have some rooms with no steps at all for those who need it, but these rooms are located on the other side of the property, closer to the river and not to the ocean. These rooms are fit for those who need assistance or have difficulties in walking.
Again, thank you so much for visiting Tortuguero and Mawamba Lodge

We booked the 2 nights, 3 days package in Sep. We are not keen on packages but this is seems the only economical way to visit Torguero due to its secluded location.

We booked as a party of 2 (my wife and I) and were surprised to be added to a Dutch tour group of 17 others that we didn't know. To make matters worse we were expected to eat breakfast, lunch and dinner on one big long table as a group at set times in school dinner fashion. We spoke to the hotel manager (in fluent spanish) that this was not what we expected and booked and we would like to sit together, just the two of us. He explained that this was not normally how they carried out meal times at the hotel but said on this occasion they would arrange this for us and we would have a table for dinner that eve. That eve this was still not arranged and after speaking with the manager again he rudely informed us that we would have to set the table ourselves using the crockery from the long table set for us with the group. Again we expressed that we were not happy and did not book to have all our meals with a group of people we did not know or speak the same language. We told him we would contact head office for which he replied 'I will take my chances!' After contacting head office a table was arranged for us the next morning however we were leaving that day and only had two meals left. This was a real shame as the hotel location was fantastic, the rest of the staff so friendly, guides amazing, the hotel should really think if this manager is right for the hotel (other reviewers have also complained about his attitude). We were totally happy to be on a transfer with other traveller's, watch the turtles as part of a tour but eating breakfast, lunch and dinner together was too much and not mentioned on their website that this is how they operate.

Other things that others have mentioned
-Yes, there isn't hot water everyday (didn't bother us as it was so hot!)
-Food is bland and not the best although food is generally not great in CR so the food here is not that bad.

Room Tip: Room 37 is by the beach and you wake up to the sound of the sea every morning

Dear gigglybebe,
Thank so much for taking the time to write about your experience. I am very sorry to hear about your dissapointment with our manager and the seating arrangements, and hope that we had been able to assist you with your needs and wants in a better way.
Our seating arrangement at Mawamba Lodge is something we have talked about quite a lot around here, because some people have commented on it, and we have always replied to it and let our visitors know why is it that we believe in this philosophy. We have been in business for many years now, actually 28 this year. Through this time, we have met people from around the world and although Tortuguero is everyday more "closer" to come, because of the fact that we provide all the logistics and take care of all the arrangements, it is still a very remote location to visit, with rustic facilities and great nature. We feel that coming all the way here is in itself a very nice adventure, and we want visitors who come to get together and get to know each other, not only traveling, but leaving behind an experience and hopefully, new friends. Since we are on a package deal, and are with a tour guide the whole time, we like to seat people together so they can get to know each. Our restaurant is designed to be done this way, and it would be very difficult to provide everybody with their own table. Our idea, is that people share experiences with the guide, share experienes with each other and get to know everybody on the group. From this philosophy we have received many incredible comments from visitors, who tell us how great it was as an opportunity to meet new people, make new acquaintances and new friends.
I am sorry to hear you were not were of this and that it came as a surprise to you.
We thank you for your observations and we will do our best to make this better known to every body.
Muchas gracias

The thing to remember about this place is that it is a wildlife lodge, so don't expect it to be wall to wall luxury. The rooms are basic, but clean, no aircon or any other electrical gadgets. Beds are big and comfy, but due to getting up early and returning late, you don't spend much time in them!
The food is basic but tasty, the bar and pool area are lovely. Sitting there watching the large green iguanas sunbathing by the pool and having an afternoon cocktail, I was in heaven!
The wildlife experience is great, but beware, the animals are wild and not easy to see. We did an early morning and afternoon boat trip. Our highlight was going on an escorted night beach visit to watch a large Green turtle lay her eggs, wonderful, magic experience.
The nearby town is very small, just really the one street but worth a walk through.
The gardens in the lodge are great, I recomend that everyone visits the butterfly and frog house. The poison tree frog are spectacular but tiny and very hard to spot in the wild.
The hotel is sandwiched in between a fab black sand beach and the lagoon, so the best of both worlds.

To sum up, you will love this place if your expectations are realistic, leave the high heels at home, and don't go near the place if your not into jungle and wildlife.

My partner and I stayed here for 3 days/2 nights and it was an incredible experience. I was very fortunate to have met a family member whose Aunt & Uncle own this place. The service was great. The cabin was very clean and well kept. The food was excellent. We did two excursions; eg, the night time sea turtle experience and the early morning boat ride through the canals. Both tours were excellent. This lodge is smaller than another lodge we stayed at on our first visit and we both enjoyed. The grounds were well kept. The lodge had a butterfly & frog sanctuary and very nice landscaping throughout. We definitely would stay here again.
