“Not to be missed!”
Reviewed April 23, 2012

Only good things to say about this experience! Our guide, Ana Maria, was knowledgeable and very pleasant and accommodating. Tortuguero National Park was the Costa Rica that we wanted to see - toucans, egrets, herons, caimans, three kinds of monkey, iguanas, lizards. We enjoyed the boat rides. The guides were able to locate many types of wildlife for us to see and photograph. The local land iguana met us at the dock.
Food at the lodge was excellent and plentiful. Our cabin was rustic and very comfortable at the same time. The property is really beautiful - manicured and lush. I hope we have the opportunity to return here.
Our stay here was part of a package deal so I can't comment on the cost or value.

The other reviews pretty much say it...lovely hotel, though rustic. Long drive/boat ride to get here but worth it. Our tour guide Ana Maria was great, very knowledgeable and fun! We loved the boat rides into the canals, saw many different kinds of birds, 3 different kinds of monkeys and lots of wildlife in general..enjoyed the pool area and the bar area. The grounds are lovely w/ gardens and a frog and butterfly areas. The staff were very nice and helpful.

We started our CR adventure with 2 nights at this lodge. You can only get to it by boat or small plane (really) What a fantastic way to experience authentic CR rain forest is a rustic but comfortable way. We were busy with included activities/tours all day long. Make sure you bring a zoom lense camera, mosquito repellent and rain ponchos. And do not expect to swim in the sea. It is way too rough and not allowed. We were very fortunate to have Harvey as our tour guide for the entire stay. He is funny, knowledgable, smart and an all-around nice guy. Although he was not our official guide, we also got to know Andy, who is helpful and a real nice guy too.

Room Tip: All the cabins are similiar and spread out around the beautiful grounds. Pool and open-air dining ro...

This is a good location because it is very close to the beach and you can walk to the village and to the entrance to the National Park. The resort is well laid out in attractive gardens and the pool and restaurant area is very nice. We enjoyed the boat trips included in out 2 night package, though our group was quite big - around 40 people - so we didn't join in the walk to the village or the nature walk in the gardens. For the boat trips we split up into smaller groups of about 12. Our guide Ivan was very knowledgeable about the birds and mammals and looked after us well putting up with lots of questions, and people not arriving at the time they were asked to, with good humour. The rooms are a bit lacking in anywhere for clothes, no hanging space or drawers just a few shelves on the wall. Wifi is available in the reception arae and was good speed. The food was good, plenty of choice and good salad bar. Lovely bread.

This was the first of many hotels on our honeymoon, it was booked as a package so not sure how much each hotel cost. The hotel is in the middle of the rainforest surrounded by rivers, the only way to reach it is by boat – the journey itself was amazing! On arrival you are greeted with a cocktail. The rooms are basic wooden huts, they don’t have aircon so can get a bit warm. I loved the simplicity of the rooms and didn’t care that there was no TV, why would you want one with the amazing views and wildlife on your doorstep (we literally saw iguanas and sloths in the grounds). The food is buffet style, there’s plenty of choice with the staples of rice, beans and omelettes always on offer. We didn’t use the pool as the water was a bit too cold for us wimps! You can go on boat trips to see wildlife (didn’t see quite as much as we were hoping), plus visit the local frog & butterfly farm, the local town and the beach. If you are here at the right time you can see the turtles but we only saw left over broken egg shells. You have to visit this place for its unique location.

Although we were worried about booking a group tour as part of our private road trip around Costa Rica we were not disappointed at all. Mawamba Lodge contacted us the day before departure to confirm the meeting point. Impressive service. We joined the bus on the journey to the boat and arrived at the lodge in good time. The accommodation is basic but super clean (we later noticed the housekeeping even sweeping the ceilings etc) with excellent beds and a good shower. Although we were surprised by the 'group' table at the restaurant we understand this is the easiest way for the Lodge to keep track of new guests etc. The food served is excellent although the choice is limited at times. Unfortunately if large groups visit the start of the serving (limited time) becomes a bit of a scramble. The tours by boat are OK. I tracked the trips with my GPS and noticed that we barely entered the actual nature reserve but stayed in the main channels. We did see a fair share of the birdlife and even the odd cayman. The small village nearby which is walking distance is a 'charming' tourist trap. Yes, it is busy in the Lodge and the nature reserve but we never felt it was too crowded. The best examples of wildlife were to be seen in the grounds of Mawamba Lodge actually! Good experience.

Once at Mawamba it's fun for the kids. The pool has a shallow area and a deep area and a bridge to hide under for a break from the sun. There are iguanas all over the place. There's enough food selection for everyone to find something to eat. There's LOTS of space to play. The beach is not safe for swimming but is lovely for walking and playing in late afternoon. There are a few downsides to Mawamba: 1)The trip to get there is very long. We were picked up at 6:50 a.m. and then drove for a few hours. Stopped for breakfast at a quiet outdoor place and then continued on the bus on a VERY bumpy dirt road for 2 hours. Both my kids needed gravol. Then it's a fun boat ride in fast boats for another hour and a bit. Arrived just after 1 p.m. 2) The canal tours were scheduled for 6 a.m. and 2 p.m. Temperature-wise I'd recommend the morning one but we weren't up that early. By 2 p.m. the sun was too hot to have the kids out in it for 2 hours so just my husband went. He really enjoyed it but after the long previous day I don't think the kids would have. 3)Dinner is late (7:30) and there are no snacks available between meals so bring your own. Our kids remember the nice pool, the iguanas around the pool, the fun boat ride, and the long bumpy road.
