“Tortuga Lodge”
Reviewed March 29, 2012

We stayed at Tortuga Lodge as part of our Costa Rica Expeditions tour for 3 nights. The hotel is wonderful! From San Jose you travel by van for about 2 hours and then by boat to the lodge - the lodge is at the edge of Tortuguero National Park and is only accessible by boat or you can fly in via the local airlines or private plane. Our room was great and was on the 2nd floor of one of the bungalows - had 2 beds, a desk and chair and an expansive outside deck that ran the whole length of the bungalow. There are 2 rooms on the top & two on the bottom of each bungalow. The dining room has wonderful views of the river and the menu is set, however, do not let the set menu put you off since if something is not to your liking, they will make you something else. The hotel manager, Julian, is wonderful as is Sylvia the assistant manager. The dining room staff, the bar staff and tour guides are very informative, friendly and courteous. We loved Tortuga Lodge and would go back anytime we are in the area. The pool is also very nice!

We ask our friends, "Would you like to go on a "Ted and Betsy excellent adventure? This is the place."
The location of Tortuga Lodge, the boating excursions and guides, the wildlife, and our trip adviser Gustav Mendez who was extremely helpful and thorough all made for an unforgettable trip. We have the most spectacular photos of the wildlife which was the man purpose of our trip.

This all inclusive lodge is the best in Tortuguero National Park. Arrival is by boat, rooms are beautiful, food and service is exceptional. Grounds are gorgeous, guided boat tour of rain forest is amazing. This trip is not for everyone- this is an excellent lodge in a pristine rain forest. It is not a pampered resort. Rooms have screen, not glass windows so you can hear the sounds of the rain forest and have air circulation in a warm and humid environment. There is no A/C, and there are no TVs. The site is remote, guests only leave the grounds with a guide. You are in the rain forest so there are bugs. Large iguanas and a crocodile live on or near the grounds.

The pool is beautiful and right on the river. The food is served family style and is delicious and plentiful. The customer service is the best you will experience anywhere. Our knowledgeable boat guide pointed out a myriad of animals and plants. This lodge offers a visitor the opportunity to experience a remote tropical rain forest jungle while staying in a beautiful lodge. Tortuga Lodge surpasses all others in the area. This is a very special place!

Room Tip: Building One is the most remote and quiet.

We stayed here for 2 nights and were highly impressed. The staff and service were second to none, from being met at the airport, to the staff turning out en masse to wave the two of us away, you really did feel that you were being pampered. We booked several tours via the lodge, all of which were excellent and ran well (the tour guides were excellent with both children and a mentally disabled guest who came on the tours, but will allow you to avoid going with other peoples' children on request!), and we saw lots of wildlife just by walking in the lodge's own nature trails on our own. It rained for both days (it rains 300 days a year in Tortuguero) so we weren't able to enjoy the pool, but it looks fantastic if you are lucky enough to be there on one of the other 65 days!
My friend is vegetarian and she was provided with excellent, creative meals, rather than the usual nut cutlet or cheese tart etc. Yes, there is a set menu and no choice, but the lodge is very isolated so asking for anything else is akin to wanting the moon on a stick.
The rooms are well appointed and have a 19th-century safari vibe, and the large (covered! - they need to be!) balconies with hammocks are a nice touch.
I would thoroughly recommend this lodge to anyone wanting a special experience whilst staying at Tortuguero.

Room Tip: Rooms on the upper floor (as we had) are quiter and better

We visited Tortuga lodge as the second stop on our honeymoon. The boat ride there along the river was fun (high speed!) and we were given drinks and snacks. On arrival at the lodge we were greeted by smiling and waving staff, and a drink. The setting right on the river is beautiful, and you can also hear the ocean as well as all of the surrounding jungle noises. We saw plenty of birds, big iguanas and butterflies just around the lodge gardens. The staff were all lovely and extremely helpful, and the food was good. We went on 2 boat trips with Louis and Angelo, and saw a huge amount of wildlife - they were fantastic guides. Thank you Tortuga lodge!

Room Tip: We had a 2nd floor room which had lovely breezes at night and good views from the balcony - this was...

Planning our trip was made simple through Costa Rica Expeditions. All details were taken care of and worked out seamlessly. Upon arrival at Tortuga Lodge, we were greeted with smiles and hard-to-find hospitality. The staff is amazing! Careful attention to detail made our trip extra special. The meals were surprisingly delicious, healthy, and fresh. Complimentary coffee, tea, and snacks are offered all day. The staff members are all friendly and very accomodating. Rooms are clean, spacious and nice. Don't expect to sleep in though...the wildlife is a bit noisy early in the morning! We enjoyed a boat tour expedition and saw monkeys, caimans, turtles, crocodiles, lake otters, and a variety of birds. The Lodge offers use of the computers there, or guests may take advantage of complimentary WiFi. We were pleasantly surprised that our cell phones worked at the property as well. Our experience at Tortuga Lodge & Gardens exceeded our expectations. We've already recommended the experience to family and friends. We had a great time!

As I told the manager at Tortuga Lodge, the properties were even more beautiful than the website portrayed. Everything was so well-maintained, clean, and delightful. We were amazed that, with all of the humidity, there was no mildew smell or signs of deterioration anywhere. Everything looked brand new and perfect. We were surprised and delighted by the little touches, like the fruit drinks brought to us as we stepped off the boat from the tour, and the glasses of wine for us in our room the night before we left Tortuga, etc. The staff was very professional and kind, making sure that we were well taken care of.

Room Tip: If you are without children, ask to be as far away from any children as possible, as the rooms are o...
