We had been on a two day trip September 2013 to Tortuguero.
Arriving at La Pavona, a guy called Roberto get in contact with us while waiting for the next boat to Tortuguero. He said that he can offer some tours and, if we want he can give us further information, with not being obligatory to book.
He was quite open and we haven´t had the feeling to be cheated or to be bothered.
After arriving in Tortugero we looked around and met him in the late afternoon and booked the tour for turtle watching, canoe tour in the morning and a hike in the national park.
Turtle watching was amazing, even we have had concerns at the beginning if we should do so because of the nature, but in the end all was well organized by the turtle organization and the guide was considerately. The canoe tour and the hike was guided by Abel Diaz, who is an very friendly and interesting person and also good english speaking. Abel can copy the voices and melodys of a lot of animals. You need to get with him to hear how monkeys, birds, etc. respond to his voice. That was kind of unique, since we never met a guy who is such close to animals.
He is very carefull to the nature and defnitily nobody for big groups or motor driven boats.
Even at the hike we have had the possibility to learn and experience a lot.
Thanks for the nice day Abel!!
Don`t wait too long, make your choice - go, see and enjoy nature with Abel Diaz Borge by Kuluchs Tours!!!

There were three parts to Roberto's tour:

Turtles - in the evening we walked to the beach and saw turtles hatching eggs, burying them and then returning to the sea

Canoe tour - the following morning we took a canoe tour around the national park and saw lots if interesting wildlife, including various birds, monkeys and reptiles

Jungle walk - after the canoe we walked around the national park and saw monkeys, bats, poison frogs and lots of interesting insects and other animals.

The turtles and canoe tours were led by Roberto and the jungle walk by Filiciano. Both were very knowledgable about all of the various species and spoke fluent English and Spanish for the different members of the group.

Altogether the package was excellent value for money and I would strongly recommend it to anyone visiting Torteguero.

Roberto and Feliciano were very hard working, entertaining and professional tour guides. They gave a very local feel to all three aspects: turtles, canoe and walking tour. Also fantastic value for money

We had booked a room at El Icaco the morning we planned to drive to La Fortuna, then take the public boat taxi to Tortuguero. We booked a package that included boat fare and a morning canoe tour to see wildlife. We were surprised when we arrived at La Fortuna to have a guide, Roberto, waiting for us. We had missed the public taxi by 8 minutes, but Roberto was able to get us on a local boat sooner than the next public taxi. He accompanied us, took us to El Icaco, and met us later to sign up for more tours, including the night-time sea turtle viewing. He helped us get to know the town of Tortuguero and gave us many tips. That night we did see a sea turtle lay her eggs, and he was careful to keep the tourists out of the way of the turtles. By 5:45 the next morning, Roberto was ready to take us out on the canoe to see many types of wildlife. He and the other guides on the canal shared info about animal spottings. Later, we took a hike into the forest with Abel whose passion for his home and his job was amazing. Overall, Roberto and Abel helped us to see everything we had hoped to in Tortuguero. We felt welcome, and that we had really met some of the villagers.
