If you want the unique experience this is the place. Well designed to fit into the rainforest not to blur the surroundings. At night you can sit in your cabin and feel nature all around you . The sounds of the frogs, the howler monkeys, the birds as well as other creatures will heighten the spirit. If you are into creature comforts this is not your place. However if you want to feel close to God or Mother Earth go here. The staff is very helpful and the food is very good.

The hotel was in a fantastic location. Nestled in the forest, surrounded by wildlife. We heard the howler monkeys all day.
The hotel offers fantastic service, by the family that runs the lodge. The meals were great, wonderful costa divan dishes..
One suggestion, more towels. There were no hand or face towels provided.

We stayed 3 nights in Rana Roja and enjoyed every minute of it. The staff were all very friendly and helpful. The breakfast is included and features typical Tico dishes. They even waited for us one morning when we had gone out on a canal tour and were back later than everyone else. We chose to eat lunch and dinner there too and enjoyed the food. The lodge is not located in Tortuguero, but is a 5 minute boat ride away from the village. For us this was preferable as the cabins are located in the jungle so you do get to hear and see wildlife from your terrace. There is a great swimming pool adjacent to the restaurant - it is a lovely place to hange out when relaxing after a tour. There is also a bar where drinks seem a little pricey, but it's nice feature to have. You can book tours at the lodge or choose to do your own with other companies. There are also kayaks that you can use for free if you want to paddle around the canals.

We stayed only 1 night at Rana Roja but enjoyed it a lot. The hotel is not situated in the village of Tortuguero itself, but it is a 5-minute boat ride (with boat taxis).

The very positive points are that the bungalows are located right in the middle of the "jungle" with large glass windows that make you see all the nature surrounding you when you are inside. We could hear monos (monkeys!) and all the birds, frogs and wild animals that you find in Costa Rica. It was actually the wildest environment and lodge of our 2-week trip in Costa Rica.

Moreover, the staff was very helpful and nice, they helped us book our evening tour to see the turtles (the main attraction in Tortuguero), and the canoe tour in the canals the next morning, but you can also do it yourself in the village of Tortuguero and it will probably be a little less expensive. But that saved us some time, and we enjoyed having it taken care of for us.

There is also a very nice pool that you definitely appreciate when it is so hot out there ! And we were very much pleased likewise with the breakfast buffet after our canoe tour in the canals (beautiful!) : a typical "Tico" breakfast with fresh fruit, eggs, pinto gallo etc.

We stayed there in August, so not during the high season, and enjoyed it even more since there were not so many tourists at the hotel, which is quite big (there are actually 2 hotels right next to each other that share the same pool). So it you like small places, like B&B, you will perhaps be a bit disppointed, but even if it is a hotel, I'd like to stress that is looks like a family hotel, with a friendly atmosphere and great service, for not such a high price (75$ for one night). The staff does everything to make you feel comfortable so that you enjoy your stay there. Rana Roja definitely worked for us !

We're now back in France, already missing the jungle and wildlife, but we hope to go back to Costa Rica one day and if we return to Tortuguero, we won't hesitate to stay again at Rana Roja Lodge (which means: the red frog !)

The staff at Rana Roja were very kind and helpful. They answered many or our questions, helped us book outings and transportation, and were on call to remove bugs from our room at all times.
The rooms are basic, yet spacious and clean. The screens all around the cabana allow for an amazing experience as howler monkeys, an array of other night creatures, and thunder storms fill the night. The downside, however, is that bugs do get in. We mostly saw extra large grasshoppers, a few spiders, and a few mosquitos, but nothing that would keep me from going to Rana Roja again. It's all just a part of the jungle experience. If you are looking for a bug-free experience, don't go to Tortuguero. If you are looking for a bug-minimal experience, pay a lot of money and stay at a high end lodge.
Breakfast is included and it is average. I would suggest not paying for the lunch or dinner provided at Rana Roja, as it is also just average. For the same price or less you can get something much more delicious and much more authentic in Tortuguero Village. Do go to the bar and drink a pina colada. The bar has a wonderful atmosphere and we spent many hours hanging out there by the river and sipping tropical drinks surrounded by jungle. Wonderful!
Overall, I would absolutely return to Rana Roja and I would absolutely refer people there. We had a wonderful experience and look forward to returning.

The location is amazing, you really are in the jungle! The cabins are perfect, basic but clean and roomy enough for 2 nights. There's no AC which was fine for us, the ceiling fan did it's work and half the walls are simply mosquito netting so we were comfortable despite the extreme humidity - it is a rainforest after all! The food was o.k., not amazing, but we came for the jungle and animals not the food. Howler monkeys are in the trees all around you and love to give you an early, 4am wake up call - we loved this and didn't mnind waking early - it gets dark at 6.30 and we were usually in bed by 8.30 tired from hiking, kayaking, out on the canal or visiting the cute, clean and friendly town - well, one street that is called the 'town'. We added the turtle watching tour at nigiht which was pretty hard going, walking 3k on the sand in the humidity in the dark. We only got to see one turtle but understand we were unlucky and usually there are more on the beach. The one we did see made it worth it though. The kayaking was fabulous, my fav tour. Our tour guide, Laura from Exploradores was amazing, so knowledgeable and friendly. Oh, we also did the Canopy tour and although it wasn't high, as in La Fortuna or Puerto Viajo, it was tons of fun and the staff were once again amazing. The only down side to this trip is the number of youth groups that visit, 20 teenagers making more noise than the monkeys, really spoiled the tranquility and feel of being in the wilderness - pre-bed time they were crazy noisy and first thing in the morning.

Room Tip: Request a room away from the dormitory style rooms where all the youth groups seem to be located, th...

If you like staff who cant do enough to make your stay a pleasant one and spider monkeys swinging around overhead whilst you enjoy drinks around the pool, then you must go here! Fab and unusual layout nestled amongst the flora and fauna of Tortuguero. Fun boat rides to and from everywhere, nice food and beautiful gardens.Very likely to see some good spiders/snakes/colourful birds etc, and that´s just outside your door.

Rooms are fairly sealed off but you will definately encounter the odd beastie that´s slipped in. Take earplugs if a light sleeper, as all that separates you from jungle noises are mosquito screens which are essentially the walls of your bungalow. No a/c but the fan is powerful, actually woke up cold once or twice.

Amazng way to spend our first few days, thanks to all the staff. Oh, and do the zipline canopy tour, the guys who run it are a laugh!
