“Must stay here!”

The Don and his staff here will go out of their way to make your stay in Tortuguero a very comfortable and memorable one. He went out of his way to wake up early and make sure we made our 6AM boat ride out of Tortuguero to catch a 12pm flight out of San Jose.
In terms of hospitality, beauty, food and culture this is without-a-doubt the authentic Costa Rican experience you don't want to miss.

As we were too early we decided to take a private taxi boat to go to the lodge, the ride was very nice and the welcome at the lodge extremly friendly. The cabins were very spacious, well equipped and clean and in the middle of the nature. Canoes were for free use and the lodge organised a great tour through the national park with Abel with a boat without any motors. The meals were very delicious and we always looked forward to it. We can really recommend this place to stay.

I stayed here for nights two lasts last February. At the time there were no reviews on trip advisor so I was a bit nervous, but the place is simply stunning. The cabins and dining area are lovely. The food is excellent and they even made me a special vegetarian meal. The owner is really friendly and welcoming and I loved the pool. It was one of the highlights of my trip to Costa Rica.

Rana Roja was our 3 nite Tortuguaro base the middle of Sept. 2011

We arrived via the canals from Moin which was a stupendous 3 hour tour by boat, seeing Crocs, Caimen, birds to numerous to mention, monkeys waving from trees and incredible scenery. We were greeeted by the manager, and the owner who gave us some interesting info on the area and shown the lovely dining building and then our lodge room. Very clean, cool with one side totally screened windows overlooking the jungle and comfy rocking chairs to just sit for a time and watch nature appear before our eyes. Good shower pressure and a really good sized room. More than adequate space for 4 people . Very tasty, well seved buffet for dinner, dessert and great coffee along with water to fill your bottles. Great rain storm in the evening and awaking to Howler Monkeys doing what they do best. Howling! the next morning early. RR is located on property between the old and new sections of Evergreen Lodge, they share the bar and pool areas and the walks going from one area to another are gorgeous with flowers, Iquanas, and monkeys.

All of the staff, from reception to security are friendly, helpful and genuinely glad to stop and help or just say HI. All turtle tours in Tortuguaro are on the main Pacific Beach, at set times and run by CCC. Excellent job. We were so blessed to see a huge mama come out of the ocean, make her way up the beach, dig her nest hole, lay her eggs, cover and slowly return to the sea.

Just amazing, After tours in the area and walking the Town we were excited to return to RR to sit on our deck and spend hours watching all of the nature that surrounds Rana Roja. We would not hesitate to recommend RR to family's with younger children, older travelers like us and young people looking for a clean, cost effective, not chaotic busy lodge. Thanks to all of our new friends at Rana Roja for a marvelous time. Cant wait to return and see the new bar and deck area overlooking the canal that was being built while we were there.

Room Tip: Just ask and they will help you with anything

This guy who wrote the review above does not know what he's talking about. The staff Is super awesome . Leno hooked up my trip. They go out of there way for you. Breakfast is included as well . The rooms are big and spacious , I had monkeys on top of my cabin which was really cool. The pool is up kept everyday , laundry is free , just tip . It's a 2$ taxi boat rode to the village , which i liked not being in the village . I ended up meeting locals and staying a extra night . Tortuguero was one of my fav spots

As a lodge this place was pretty good. The cabins are spacious and clean. The pool was refreshing. The food was really very good and the restaurant building quite comfortable. However.....there are a lot of big and scary bugs everywhere and they are able to get into the rooms. The windows are screened but things still get in. Generally in Costa Rica you get used to ants in the bathroom and a few bugs here and there but this is the only place I could barely sleep due to fear of creepy crawlies. Our friend had a baby boa constrictor in her room, and when we woke up, there was an 8 inch diameter spider on our wall. Mosquito nets would help if they had them. It's a cool adventure and I'm glad I did it. Just keep in mind you are in a secluded natural park environment.
