“Green paradise”
Reviewed January 19, 2014

We were here for three nights and it's location is just perfect. When we arrived the howler monkeys howled from the trees just nearby and it was all so surrealistic. Our room was spacious, cozy and well cleaned - no bugs or spiders inside the room. Only problem was the pipes for WC which were completely overloaded a several times and the smell were not good in the heat.

The location of this lodge is totally beautiful and you can either enjoy the sun and take a bath in the pool or you can explore the nature along the track on the property. A little baby cayman were living just next to the restaurant - so sweet.

We had all the meals in one of the restaurants together with the rest of the group, and the food is really delicious! They served several different dishes each lunch and dinner and it was all so good!

This is a paradise with all the animals and birds we have spotted during the boat trips and also within the property. It's so green and beautiful here. The fact that they have free wifi available in the reception and nearby is amazing, I think.
We had a fantastic time here and would definitely go back.

We were very comfortable in our simple little cabin, and enjoyed the stunningly beautiful waterways & National Park. The guides work very hard to make sure you have a great experience. The only drawback is that the lodge tries to organize everyone into group activities which is understandable because you have to use a boat to get there and to explore the area. However, my favorite experiences were those I had in solitude or with just a few family members such as the very peaceful canoe trip we took with a guide. I would recommend Evergreen, but I think a 2 night stay is adequate.

Our travel agent book this tour, all through our traveling we had private transports and amazing hotels but we didn't realise that the stay at the evergreen will be charter holiday. We got picked up at the hotel in a coach and we had breakfast parked with another coach in the middle of nowhere. We arrived at the hotel, and the manager Heidi wasn't the most pleasant. The cabins look good, but there is no glass on the windows, just some old mosquito nets, and there were holes on the door, so the mosquitoes are free to come and go! Do bring a coal and lots of anti mosquitoes, as we got bitten to death. The tour in the afternoon in the town is a bit useless, they dump you for two hours there, the village is small and you can't swim in the beach...The best thing we did was the tour with Miguel the next day on his small little boat, we saw a lot of wildlife, also the swimming pool at the hotel was very nice. Also, we had to go back to guapiles for our next transfer to Puerto Viejo, and we found out there is a boat that goes to Limon, which is a much better way to travel. Overall, one night would have been enough in that place, from my point of view.

We stayed in a Standard Lodge. Clean and sufficient. The staff was very friendly. The guides for the tours too. Only the jungle walk tour was very poor. Group of 30 people and a guide crying all time around. You can see much more animals when you walk alone around the lodges and on the boat trip back. Nevertheless the trip was fine and we would do it always again. Special: free WiFi, free coffee, free water available!

We stayed in one of the wooden cabins of this bungalow hotel. Our room was spacious, charming and simple with a small porch. Decent beds. No glass windows, so it does get damp after rain showers and you can hear the jungle sounds (which we thought was pretty special). There were more than enough towels (also for swimming), which was not a luxury because (due to the rain season) it was impossible to dry them.
The bathroom was spacious, but not a lot space to put down toiletries (except for the floor). Shower ok.
Be careful with stuff you leave (to dry) outside your cabin: my husband’s shoes were stolen during the night (don’t think it was a monkey ;-)).

Wifi is available in an area next to the reception, and was working the times we used it. The swimming pool and bar area is a relaxed place to hang out in the end of the afternoon (when everybody is back from their tours and before dinner time). Make sure you bring bug spray.
Beautiful plants and flowers are grown in the surrounding gardens. As for wildlife around the cabins, we saw a.o. monkeys, tucans and a snake.

This hotel receives mostly groups. Even if you’re travelling as an independent family (as we did) you are linked to a guide (probably through the local travel agency), and tours and excursions are on a (strict!) time schedule. I’m not a big fan of group tours (sometimes felt like Kindergarten) but I can see the necessity of some organisation in a small area such as Tortuguero.
The tours (e.g. boat, walking, village) conveniently leave from the piers of the hotel. The quality strongly depends on the guide (both his/her spotting-animals skills and the ability to share information). We also booked the nightly turtle beach tour, which was very special (we saw the turtles laying eggs). Even though it’s not spectacular, I felt I was in the midst of a NatGeo documentary. A precious holiday memory. Some tours can only be paid in cash and there is no ATM close to the hotel (you’ll need to go to the village by boat).

For all guests, meals are included. Three times a day during one hour only, so if you’re late, there’s nothing else available. Food is served as a simple buffet, a couple of choices, both local and ‘western’, nothing spectacular.
The owner and staff members are polite and helpful.

Except for the excursions there is not much to do in this hotel (especially when it rains), and for us 3 days / 2 nights was just fine.

What I loved most about this hotel is that you had to take a boat to get there! It's in a pretty remote location and it feels like you're in the rainforest - because you are!

My husband is not a lover of bugs and crawly things, but found the room to be suitably 'bug-proof' which assauged his fears 100%. The rooms lack air-conditioning, but have a ceiling fan and were very comfortable with big, lofty ceilings and an enormous shower! There is no TV, which was just fine by us. There is a wi-fi spot by the main office, but we spent our vacation almost entirely 'unplugged'. The rooms are not sound-proof and you will hear lots of noisy frogs and monkeys, which I thought was awesome, but understand that other guests may not.

Speaking of creatures, it was not uncommon to see monkeys, poison dart or red-eyed tree frogs. We also saw a sloth just hanging out in a tree near our hotel! Pretty awesome! The plants are absolutely gorgeous - it is very lush! Also, the hotel allows you to 'check-out' (rent for free) kayaks and paddle into the jungle at your leisure. There is also a walking trail and a zip-line course nearby so there are several activities nearby. The main town of Tortuguero is a boat ride away, and it is free if you hop on one that is transporting hotel staff at certain times.

We did book a few activities (some were part of our overall tour package) and found the prices to be very reasonable. The zip-line guys were GREAT fun and so encouraging. It was very safe and professional. We especially loved the Night Turtle tour - seeing the turtle lay eggs at night was a bucket list-type of experience. A very knowledgeable guide and only 6 other guests were there - pretty amazing experience and funds from the tour tickets go back to conservation, as they explained. The town itself is very colorful and interesting as well. In addition, a lot of wildlife can be seen just going around on the transit boats. Any time we got to zip around (or cruise) in a boat was so much fun!

Food and staff at this hotel were outstanding. I think we enjoyed the food the most here of all places during our stay in Costa Rica. The staff was very kind and accommodating. We also got some very good tips and information from the pool bartender. He was very interesting to speak with and we got a lot of answers to questions such as 'what is that sound?' or 'is this plant poisonous?'. Our tour guides were also wonderful (Go Pachira, I think?) and gave us lots of personalized attention and tips. They helped coordinate everything and made our stay here unforgettable. I highly recommend this place for a very authentic experience with lots of comfort and convenience.

The overall service was good and so was the food.
The phone coverage was really bad, and when I mentioned it to the Manager Heidi, she said they had no reception problems, and insinuated that something was wrong with my phone and I should try taking out the battery. When I followed her advice, it just got me in more problems! When I later spoke with our party at the dinning tale, several complained about the phone reception. The manager Jonathan Mendoza helped me out as much as he could with my phone. He put a lot of effort into helping out a guest. When I mentioned to Heidi that she should not misinform her guests about the phone reception, she insisted they had not phone reception problems.
