“Rain forest splendor”
Reviewed January 27, 2013 via mobile

In order to get to this hotel, we were bused from San Jose to a depot on the edge of a river where we were met by long, narrow covered boats for the 90 min trip down-river to the property. There were other boats there collecting other guests for this and other resorts and the whole ambiance was exciting and adventurous. More than one of our group commented on the African Queen feel. The rooms are single or connected cabins that, considering that you are in a rain forest where everything is transported in by boat, were very attractive and comfortable. Sitting on the front porch in the stereotypical Costa Rican rockers was a real pleasure. The dining room was an attractive screened pavilion with good, but somewhat repetitive food. There is a nature trail on the property that was fun, but we saw toucans, sloths, spider,white-faced and howler monkeys right on the main grounds. The staff we met were all friendly and helpful, especially Victor, the manager and Kevin the bartender. Yes it rains and is humid, but what else would you expect in a rain forest?

We had three wonderful days here with peace and quiet, nice tours, good food and very friendly people. We can highly recommend a stay with Evergreen Lodge, however be warned of very high humidity; hair, clothes and beddings will all be moist. The beautiful surroundings will make sure that you don`t care and still have a wonderful time.

This is a great place for nature lovers. I expected something very very rustic and was prepared for it, but once I arrived I discover it was actually pretty confortable. There was many people but they still manage to give a great service. the food was amazing. I was reading about other reviews of this hotel that say the food was awful, but actually for me it was just fine, it was made with lots of care and delicious. My onyl complain would be that during the day the bar and music was somehow a little high and I wanted a little more privacy and quite, but I was in room 2 very close to the entrance of the hotel. Overall I would trully recommend it.

The lodge is in a beautiful spot and is well maintained and clean. The rooms are comfortable but spare. The is no air conditioning and it is a rain forest-that's part of the adventure. The food was very nice and also was generous. The pool is very large and has a covered bar attached. It's great for a few days to enjoy nature and relax.

Great staff. Food was basic no place to get a snack if you wanted. Meals were pretty much the sam each dat. We took a trip into town didn't see any turtles. I would only recommend 1 night if your not into birds or insects. Our room had no mirror, and had electric outlets in places that wS useless to us. We felt lucky that we had plenty of hot water. Most people we met had no hot water at all. No air condition although we had a ceiling fan that worked but we didn't feel it,but strange enough got by.
We went kayaking in the jungle saw lots of Spider Monkey's in places where you couldn't see by walking trail.

Spent 2 nites here at the end of our tour to Costa Rica-we really were in the jungle! To get here, you take an "eco road" (unpaved) to a dirt parking lot in the middle of nowhere-this is the "dock" where the boats to take you to Tortuguera pull up to the side of the brown river. There is no true dock; there is a bar/caferteria (open air, but covered and paved) that has a few bathrooms. You have to lug your luggage onto the boat for the hour or so ride to the lodge (we saw a croc as well as numerous birds). We visited in the midst of a significant storm so the lodges' docks were barely usable. The room is reminescent of summer camp--iron bedstead, no glass just screens on the windows (and curtains for privacy) and thankfully a ceiling fan. There is electricity (and never went out that I am aware of) but no a/c; while they advertise hot water, don't expect a long hot shower! Loved the rocking chairs on the "porch" where I could watch the hummingbirds and toucans. Dining is buffet style in your assigned dining "room"-again all open to the jungle (though I was never too bothered by bugs. Food was OK-certainly plentiful and you could get a beer or wine for a bit extra. Good bartender and the only TV I saw was in the bar area. Beautiful pool, though I never had the energy to give it a try. Internet is only available near the "office" and was pretty slow--I just needed it to check in with my office once a day via email so that was not a big deal for me tho my teen daughters bemoaned it. We did get up early (4:45) and saw the miraculous turtle hatching, as well as several boat trips to spot wildlife (birds, crocs, caimans, monkeys, sloths); the guide was great-English was good and knowlege fantastic.

Be warned, this is the JUNGLE-it was HOT and HUMID! Even the TP is damp and everything you bring will be too, even if it never leaves your suitcase. We saw some folks with huge suitcase tho we were advised to bring only a small duffle which was managable. Shorts, tees, and sandels that can get wet plus rain gear (and don't forget raingear for that expensive camera....says the voice of experience). My husband is desparate to go back, he only took 1000 pictures.

Room Tip: we had a room on the "end" of a row, so had more windows to catch more of the breeze.
