“Highlight of a trip to Costa Rica”
Reviewed November 18, 2011

This lodge and the available activities were the highlight of our 12 day trip to Costa Rica. Outstanding restaurant with stunning fresh flowers at each meal and attentive service. Heidi, the manager, is tops. We watched the endangered green sea turtle hatchlings as they rushed to the ocean, cruised down the canals through the jungle, watched monkeys frolic through the trees outside our door, and were awakened each morning by tropical birds. We couldn't find a fault with anything. It's an effort to get here, but well worth it for a lifetime of memories.

We came here with Activities Abroad. It was an amazing well conducted trip with great opportunites to get close to the wildlife. This lodge provided clean accommodation, good food and a great pool for the children to have fun in. There were monkeys right outside the room which the children adored. We took the night turtle tour and were very lucky to see Green turtles laying eggs - an amazing priviledge. Activities Abroad made the whole experience very easy and enjoyable.

I was hesitant to stay at a rainforest lodge with no air conditioning, but our 2 night stay at the Evergreen Lodge in Tortuguero was right in the middle of our tour. I will say, it was one of the best experiences. These 'cabins' are a few feet off the ground and connected by raised walkways, clearly to minimize the creepy crawlies entering your room. Everything is clean and well maintained, the staff are wonderful, treating you like a guest in what is essentially their home. You can only reach this lodge by boat, no roads connect them to town, but it is a boat ride worth taking. Falling asleep each night with only a ceiling fan was a bit warm at first, but the sound of insects lulls you to sleep (it's not as creepy as you'd think), then the rain comes and the temperature drops until 5am, when the howler monkeys and birds fight to be heard, ensuring that you won't need an alarm. Air conditioners would surely drown out one of the most memorable, and frankly very comfortable experiences. The sounds, the smells, the change in temperature were all wonderful - and I am no camper, 5 star hotels please! The rooms are a bit stark, the better to sweep them out each day, and the bathrooms are large are clean, high ceilings and large screens keep the rooms comfortable. I will say that this is more enjoyable if you go with a group. One or two people complaining about chasing a gekko around the room is very different than 10 or 20 laughing together at the pool. These folks know they have a special place, and provide wonderful tours and services to help you see where all the birds and animals hide out. The restaurant is informal, and the food very good, a small outdoor (of course) bar has the only TV, and sits across from the reception counter which has the only phone on the property. I never found the gift shop which signs hinted at. I've attached a picture of their beautiful turtle shaped pool with a water fall - you can see all the finishes are high quality - how they built all this in the middle of the rainforest is beyond me, but they provided a memorable experience that most of our tour group didn't want to leave.

Room Tip: The individual cottages may provide more privacy

We stayed 2 nights here in a standard room with 2 queen beds (#54, nice end unit with more windows than the other inside rooms). When you stay here it's automatically an all-inclusive package with food and tours included but alcoholic drinks and soft drinks are extra. Tour guides were excellent. We had Oliver as our primary guide and he was amazing (our other guide, Owen, not as knowledgabe). For our 2 night package we had 2 wildlife-viewing boat tours, one rainforest hike and 1 village/beach walk. Be prepared for early wake-up calls (our first boat tour was at 5:30am!) and hot, humid weather and, of course, rain. Have lots of bug spray and raingear, this is the rainforest afterall. But, even though there were lots of creepy-crawlies outside, surpisingly the rooms were very clean and bug-free. Rooms were spacious but basic as you would expect from an eco-lodge so no tv, phone or AC. The property is quite large with a nice turtle-shaped pool, kayak facility and groomed hiking trail. The restuarant was basic but the food was pretty good and buffet style. The only place for wi-fi (free by the way) and cell reception is in the bar/reception area but that's okay because you should be there to experience nature since the hotel is pretty much nestled right in the rainforest. We didn't even have to leave the property for a lot of our wildlife viewing. There were tons of birds, monkeys, caiman, frogs and even small turtles to be seen around the grounds. In fact, the only real problem with staying here is that all the birds and animals wake you up early with their chattering at the crack of dawn. Nothing too fancy but overall a great place to stay to experience all that Tortuguero has to offer.

Room Tip: Ask for a cabin or at least an end unit.

While we loved Tortuguero - the Evergreen was not a highlight. The pool that belongs to the hotel is teeny and funky smelling. Use the turtle-shaped pool way down the path (I think it belongs to the property next door) instead. We requested towels for swimming at check in, at the pool, at the other pool, at the desk, at dinner... still waiting.
Returned to our cute cabin on stilts to an army of ants carrying off a half-dead insect, a number of flying things, a few beetles having a party by the nightstand between the beds and ants in the sheets. The best thing there was the food - especially the banana cake for afternoon snack - out of this world!

We stayed here for 2 nights as part of our tour of Costa Rica and it was certainly an experience! We arrived by boat in blazing sunshine and were swiftly checked into our room, which was one of the older individual cottages on stilts. The bedroom area of the cottage was quite big, with a double and a single bed and lots of storage space. The front porch had two rocking chairs and there was also a back porch for a different view of the rainforest. The bathroom let things down a bit – it was small and dingy but to be honest we were just happy to find out it had hot water! When staying here, you do have to bear in mind that you visiting a living rainforest, not a zoo. Tortuguero is a mecca for wildlife viewing – therefore you should expect that wildlife to be evident at the hotel as well. This means that you are likely to hear odd noises at various times of the day and night and will also probably end up having ants, spiders and mosquitoes in your room. We found that a good pair of earplugs and some bug spray dealt with most issues and quickly felt at home in our little cottage. As we were only staying there for a short time, we didn’t have much chance to make use of the facilities there, but there are 2 pools, a bar (with WiFi), a jungle walk and a canopy tour ($30 approx) available on site. The food choice in the restaurant wasn’t particularly extensive but it tasted very nice - but it is best get there at the start of mealtimes as some things did start to run out towards the end. Our stay included a visit to Tortuguero village and its Turtle Museum, a sunset cruise and 2 wildlife spotting boat trips. We had lovely sunny weather for the visit and the cruise, but then the rainforest really lived up to its name for the boat trips and we got absolutely soaked. Because of the humidity levels, it was very difficult to dry things at our room so we ended up having to pack some of our clothes wet, which wasn’t nice. We found out later that the hotel had a dryer which we could have used – shame this wasn’t advertised anywhere! It would be fair to say that this did put a bit of a ‘dampener’ on things, but rain, along with noise and insects, are just something you’ll have to put up with if you want to visit Tortuguero. All in all, we did really like this hotel and enjoyed our time in the area, so would recommend it to others.

Had a corner room (in a row of rooms) so had a wall of windows. Lush forest all around. Room was basic and did not always have hot water but it was what I expected given what I read. Pretty grounds. Decent zip lining. Definitely take the canal cruise -- one of the highlights of my trip. Very good food. Very accommodating. The howler monkeys were great at sunrise. All rooms seem to be set up differently but I ended up moving an end table to the huge bathroom so I had somewhere to put my blowdryer, etc. Keep in mind that nothing dries quickly here (including your hair).
