If you are looking for an expensive five-star resort, keep looking. What you will find here is more a very comfortable and modest hotel for a great price. I myself enjoy more humble hotel choices. In the past I have experienced several overdone and overpriced hotels where the atmosphere borders on smug. You won't find that here and its such a blessing.
The room we originally reserved was no longer available due to renovations, so the owners upgraded us for no charge. The upgrade consisted of a room downstairs, with ac, 2 queen beds, a kitchen, private bath, tv and jacuzzi. We were most appreciative, yet I believe even without the free upgrade we would have had an equally pleasant stay. The beds were comfortable and the room was very clean. The decor is warm and simple.
The owners, Luis and Bethany, were so kind. They weren't at all overbearing. You knew they were there if you needed them, yet give you privacy and respect as well. This is a terrific quality as I have been to several hotels where the staff or owners were much too involved making you feel as a prisoner rather than a guest.
The hotel is a great find and as an added bonus, there is a quaint cafe attached offering a covered patio. I really liked that it is open and lets the Caribbean coast air glide through as well as offer a view to different types of wildlife mostly including lizards, thus earning it the name, the Lizard King Hotel.
The breakfast is very good. Bethany bakes and has many delicious cafe options such as breakfast, brunch, lunch and desserts. Decent variety of coffees and teas as well. My boyfriend had her banana pancakes and they were so delicious! Warm and buttery, with the taste of fresh cooked bananas. The pancakes were delightfully fluffy and practically melt in your mouth. I had the traditional Costa Rican breakfast which consisted of scrambled or fried egg, gallo pinto, toast and fried plantains. It was very tasty. I love the fried plantain as it is somewhat sweet and carmelized and is such a nice compliment to the egg and gallo pinto which was traditionally flavored and much enjoyed. One afternoon Bethany was exploring new recipes and made macaroons. She gave us two as to obtain our feedback for this item. I have never liked coconut, but I admit I ate my entire piece. It was fresh out of the oven and had a wonderfully light texture flavored of warm and sugary coconut with just a hint of butter. Indeed a great item to add!
Located on the edge of town farthest from the bus stop, off the main road. The Lizard King Hotel Resort is only steps away from exploring the restaurants, bars and tourist shops. Also only a 30 second walk to the beach. Very private, yet very accessible, we would stay here again.
