“True Paradise!”
Reviewed January 20, 2016 for a stay in December 2015

This was our first visit to the Caribbean side of Costa Rica and what an experience it was! We were hoping to see a lot of wildlife and we didn't have to leave the property as Janet and Nick have regular visits from Capuchin and Howler monkeys, agoutis, blue morpho butterflies, black and green dart frogs, all types of birds (parakeets, toucans, trogons, hawks) and a even a sloth. Janet has created a beautiful garden that attracts all of these animals and numerous butterflies. There was nothing more relaxing than sitting in the open living area watching the wildlife and smelling the flowers on a daily basis.
Janet and Nick are the most gracious hosts and went out of their way to make our stay one of the most memorable of our 4 week trip. They included us for Christmas dinner with their friends, took us to town to enjoy their restaurant, made very last minute arrangements for transport to Jaco when our car rental fell through, and even had bicycles available for our use.
The short walk to the beach was as much of an adventure as the beach itself as we almost rode our bike into a sloth that was hanging from a tree branch.
Nick and Janet provided excellent recommendations for places to shop and have dinner and we absolutely loved all of their suggestions. All were either a short walk or bike ride away. We used the bikes to get everywhere we needed to go and made it more interesting to be able to see all the small things just off the road, hidden trails, animals, birds.
Angler's Lair is in the perfect location, half way in between Puerto Viejo and Manzanillo, and an absolutely tranquil place to relax.

“Home in the jungle ”
Reviewed September 14, 2015 for a stay in September 2015

If there's a better place to stay in puerto Viejo I'd be hard pressed to find it. It's like visiting your favorite aunt and uncle in paradise. They've been so helpful and comforting. First day here Janet explained how to use the money (we had no clue.) She gave me a bandaid and antibiotic cream for my blister, drove us to town in her golf cart, fed us, and just made us feel comfortable in a place that she KNOWS is out of our comfort zone. It's just a good way to ease yourself in if you've never been here. The beach is super close and the house is off the beaten path. A little ways to get into town but there's plenty restaurants close by and a grocery store for you to buy things to cook yourself in the kitchen....just do yourself a favor and stop searching. You're not going to find a better place to stay or better people to stay with!

Thank you honeymooners for such a nice review! We really enjoyed you as guests and what a funny coincidence that we come from the same town--funnier still that you had no idea of this when booking! I guess it just proves the magic of the jungle...

“Spacious, private, quiet and centrally located”
Reviewed April 22, 2015 for a stay in March 2015

The two plus weeks we spent here were just wonderfull. It was a very relaxing and safe place to stay. We could take a bus to town or on down the beach if we were so inclined. There is a small grocery store very close that was nice. The beach is only a few minutes walk. Janet and Nic were the best hosts. We want to come back next year. I have stayed in a lot of places and this was definately top of the list!

Thank you!! We hope you will come back next year! Or even in October when the seas are flat, or September when all the weird tropical fruit are out, or .... Well, we obviously look forward to the next time!

Staying at Angler's Lair was a unique experience you likely won't find elsewhere. We experienced the combination of being surrounded by nature yet secure in our accommodations, plus having attentive hosts who provided the perfect amount of privacy. The suite was spotless, gorgeous and absolutely one-of-a-kind with artistic and natural touches throughout. The location also was perfect - just far enough from the 'bustle' of Puerto Viejo, and a short walk to groceries and good restaurants nearby, as well as beautiful beaches. Janet and Nick are wonderful people who genuinely want others to experience this piece of paradise they've carved out for themselves.

Thank you for the generous comments. Nick and I really enjoyed meeting both of you, and it was a pleasure to share your company a few times. It tickled us that you were so happy with the random wildlife spottings, and had such appreciation for the plentiful birding opportunities here and close by. It reminded us how fortunate we are to live in/among such spectacular flora and fauna!! The morning you left the beautiful Lattice Tail Trogon was feeding off the palm right in front of the apartment. I think they showed up just a few hours late for your photo-shoot! And then this morning, a large group--10-12--of the Collared Aracaris feeding in the big tree by the shower, gave me fond memories of you.
Thank you again for taking the time to review your stay. We hope you'll visit again!

We spent some days in Janet's beautiful house and it was just amazing!
The house was very clean and the details of decoration were just unique. The bathroom is spectacular with its wooden washing table and the cute little mosaics everywhere. The outdoor shower has warm water and makes you feel part of the nature.
The open kitchen is well equiped , so you can prepare easyly your own food at home.
Janet and nick,Americans, are great hosts, the live in the upper part of the house. They were very helpful and gentle.
The beach of Chiquita , for me one of the nicest in the area of puerto viejo, it's just a 3 min foot walk away. There is a grocery and several restaurants nearby in easy walk distance.
We would defenetly recommend this accommodation and hope to come back!

You're so kind to leave such a detailed review!! Putting the apartment together was a labor of love for us. Nick and I are the classic "Do-It-Yourselfer" who spent weekends at Home Depot when we lived in the US, so we've found a replacement here with jungle ingenuity and upcycling used/discarded items. The furniture you commented on was all crafted from the framing of an old house that was torn down. The sink, fashioned from a giant log, was in that house. The mosaics are projects that kept me busy when the seas are too high for fishing or it's too wet for gardening, and the gardens, well, they are how we not only feed our bellies but our soul. I have always felt happiest when my fingers are in the dirt!
It was a pleasure to have you in our home and wish you well in your future travels. If you're ever back here, we would delight in your company again.
