We loved this place!!! All of the people at Banana Azul were friendly and helpful. They went out of their way at all times to make our stay in Costa Rica perfect. On their recommendation we went on a snorkeling trip in Cahuita which is located just north of Puerto Viejo. It ended up being one of our favorite days on our trip. They recommended a restaurant in town and it turned out to be some of the best food we had on our trip. And then of course, I loved my room. Great view of the ocean from the deck. Great style. Totally cute. Loved the hammock!
Everyone morning their super awesome staff makes a great breakfast and you can sit stare at the ocean or pet all eight dogs that run around the property.
My only caution is to make sure that the construction has stopped. They are expanding the downstairs and adding rooms with jacuzzis which will probably be fabulous but the construction made spending anytime during the day in the room impossible. The noise was just too much. If you don't plan on spending anytime in your room during the day, then book this place. It is the best.

This was one of our favorite places that we stayed in all of Costa Rica! Colin and Roberto were so wonderful! The second day of our trip we saw that we had a flat tire. Colin took care of it for us so we could go on our snorkeling trip. We didn't even have to worry about a thing. They were wonderful in giving us directions, recommendations and helping! The cabins we stayed in were so close to the beach. The breakfast in the morning was so yummy. We would definitley come back.

  • Liked — The owners and how close it was to the beach
  • Disliked — the water pressure

My 10 year old daughter and I spent 17 days in Costa Rica late May/early June 2007, and staying at Banana Azul was a highlight of our trip. We stayed in the Red Frog room, which was comfortable and so pretty with personal touches. The bathroom had beautiful mosaic tile on the walls of a red frog on a leaf. Just outside our door was a large mosaiced patio with turtle and coy pond where we would relax. Sigh...can't wait to go back!

There are 5 resident dogs and 3 resident cats. which were a lot of fun to have around to play with and take to the beach. Seeing them face off with a terrestrial crab was hilarious! The grounds at Banana Azul are just gorgeous, secluded and less than 100 meters from the beach. We spent a lot of time swiming there and body surfing. Colin and Roberto, the owners, are the most friendly people and just fun all around to hang out when they're not working extremely hard pulling together the last bit of construction. They live above the Red Frog Room. There is another 2nd story duplex, which has a shared deck and cooking area, where our friends stayed. They loved their view of the ocean from their hammock. The newest building is 2 story and I believe about 13 rooms. The pictures on their website don't do it justice. The wood structure is rustic and beautiful, each room upstairs has a patio area with hammock, table and chairs. There's a lot of attention to detail and splashes of color. The room with the best ocean and grounds view is the Howler Room, which has a jacuzzi tub.

We met many, many friends here. Some were staying there long term, some short. We hung out in the evenings and walked into town together. In the mornings, great breakfasts were served on the large patio area. They were finishing up another coy pond running the distance along the building, and another turtle pond on one end of it. I think it will be really pretty when it's done. We were able to walk to town each day via the beach. If it got dark, we would take a taxi back.

Some fun things we did in Puerto Viejo were visit the sloth rescue center (Caribe Avrios) which was fun and interesting. Hands on a couple of the adults, and gawking at the babies. So cute! We actually rescued a sloth ourselves, that we found crossing the road. It was so cool! Pic attached. It wasn't hurt, we had our taxi drive help it across the road with a stick though!

We also hired a well known guide in the area to take us through the Gandoca-Manzanillo primary and secondary forest. We learned alot about indigenious people and how they survive, did some birding and wildlife watching. Abel was wonderful with my daughter, keeping it interesting and fun. $40 for the two of us for 4 hours was well worthwhile.

Other than that, we pretty much wandered around aimlessly, meeting people, eating, swimming and relaxing. We're already planning our trip back next Spring!

  • Liked — The laidback scene and beautiful grounds and accomodations. (And the price is right!)
  • Disliked — Nothing!

We stayed at Banana Azul in February and had an amazing vacation! Colin and Roberto are the most gracious hosts, offering invaluable advice and tourism tips while giving their guests space and privacy. Their staff, consisting of Alfredo and Leaver, were also very friendly and accommodating. Leaver cooks the most deicious breakfasts, with fresh fruit and coffee every morning. We can't wait to go back again and stay in the new hotel, which was just finishing construction at the end of our stay.

Puerto Viejo is an unspoiled paradise.....enough to do but not commercialized and overdeveloped. From Banana Azul you can walk to town down the beach without running into another soul save the hermit crabs or horses found wandering the beach at times. Those looking for adventure can take one of the day tours offered at the stand in town.....those looking to relax can enjoy the sun, sand, and surf on a practically deserted beach. The atmosphere is relaxed and friendly with both locals and fellow tourists alike.

I can't say enough good things about Banana Azul and the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica. We had an amazing time and can't wait to return to see more of the area and the country!

No words can describe how lovely an experience it was to stay with Colin and Roberto at Banana Azul. The setting itself and the buildings are new, sparkling clean, comfortable and well-appointed. The food was amazing, and the hospitality even better. I had to extend my trip because I couldn't get myself to leave! Keep up the great work!
