Even though we only stayed at BA for 2 days, we found that the amenities, staff and impeccable fit and finish of the place to be outstanding. It is obvious here that attention to detail is of utmost importance - it is evident in the incredible attention to detail in the fit and finish of the rooms and manicured landscaping. Originally we had booked our entire stay here but they were booked solid and only had 2 nights were available to us on the week we were in CR. However, Casa Las Brisas b & b was next door which booked through them that was very nice. CLB had full access to all the BA amenities and it turned out to be a really nice experience. The staff was very helpful , attentive , and friendly - having Gecko Trail Adventures "integrated" at BA is a win / win situation. From transportation arrangements to / from San Jose to having top notch tour / activity service, When you get to BA, knowing that there is an outfit like Gecko Trail on site only adds to the relaxation factor in my opinion. They take the guesswork out activity planning and transportation arrangements and are highly revered by BA and anyone else we mentioned them to in Puerto Viejo during our stay). After an [--] beating of a travel day and tacking on a 4 hour drive from San Jose - this is a good thing.

Folks need to understand that there are no TVs here and AC in only a few rooms - if this is a priority for you then BA is not for you. If you want to disconnect (there is wifi) in a peaceful, awesome slice of paradise and soaking in the simpler things in life, this is the place. The food and drinks are fantastic here - the location can't be beat. You are right no the beach and only 20 minutes away from town. You can either walk down the beach right into town or take advantage of bike rentals available there like we did, which in my opinion, was one of the funnest aspects of our stay.

Bottom line is, Banana Azul has everything wrapped up in one place and they do everything right. You can't go wrong with booking your stay here!!!

I have never had such a magical vacation in my life until now. The staff was incredible and combined with a beautiful hotel you can only have a wonderful time. I cried the day we left because I feel like I connected with everyone on a personal level. If you are high maintenance this is not the place for you.

Room Tip: Any room is a winner. Just remember that the balcony/patio is a shared space but they have done a gr...

My husband and I had the pleasure of staying 6 nights at Banana Azul earlier this month and could not have been happier with our choice to stay here. Colin, Fred, David, Anna Rossa, all the staff, make this a very special place.

We stayed in an ocean room. The fan kept the room comfortably cool for sleeping at night. The spacious balcony with hammock, adirondack chair, and table with stools was a nice place to relax in the early mornings and evenings. I miss waking up to the sounds of the ocean and the birds. Coffee at 6 am on the beach is a wonderful touch! The complimentary breakfasts are quite good, and the lunches and dinners we had at Banana Azul also were tasty and reasonably priced. Our room, the lounge chairs on the beach, and the whole place are all kept very clean. The garden is beautiful!

We did not have a car, and really didn’t feel as though we needed one. Cabs arrived quickly, and it was a nice walk to town along the beach. Other than relaxing on the beach, and enjoying the warm waves of the sea, one of my favorite things we did was book a hike through Gecko Trail Adventures (on site) to the Gandoca-Manzanillo wildlife reserve, with the local guide Ricky. It was an unforgettable experience.

Thank you all so much for all that you did to make this a fabulous vacation!

Small piece of paradise on the Caribbean, just a place to shut down and enjoy roughing it a bit, no TV, no phone, AC only in a few rooms, no entertainment except for the local population which seem like a blast from the past. The rooms where clean, the food was good, a very small place but well laid out and pleasing to the eye......kudos to the staff!

Room Tip: Upper rooms have the better views.

We arrived at Banana Azul late, after a long, exhausting day of travel. The room was clean and perfect-- a large bed in a separate air-conditioned area, a beautiful green tile tub and a comfy hammock.

In the morning we ate breakfast in a lovely central area surrounded by a moat full of turtles and koi. It was raining but the staff was able to suggest several things for us to do and were overall very professional and helpful. The food was delicious too.

I spent 9 days at Banana Azul, Puerto Viejo from the 20th to 29th October 2012.
Firstly David on reception was first class and nothing was too much trouble for him to help me,
especially when hurricane Sandy hit New York and I was trying to rearrange my travel arrangements. Also Colin the owner is very friendly and makes one feel at home!
My room was a delight! Huge beautiful red wood floors and walls with a fabulous 20 ft deep balcony overlooking the beautiful garden area and across to the beach.
The bed was huge and snuggly comfortable, and the large fan kept me cool at night! What a wonderful large shower area and the water was always hot!! A large mosquito net was also hung from the ceiling if needed.
Colin you have done a wonderful job on the gardens in 7 years. They are just gorgeous! get your gardener to plant a Frangipani tree as they are beautiful and the flowers give off a fabulous fragrance!
Beach is only a 3 minute walk, although the warnings of the dangerous rips kept me out of the water. The best decision you made was to put a pool in, and I took full advantage of it!
Bar and food service staff are all great and friendly people and Eduardo the Chef your cooking is excellent and so tasty. The cost of staying there is so reasonable and i would definitely recommend it to anyone visiting the area!
Finally you can organize tours from there through Gecko and if you want a guided tour through the rainforest near Talamanca ask for Ricky. He is a mature age guide who knows his stuff thoroughly and can name every single plant and show you the wildlife in its natural state. For older travellers be prepared for a fair bit of walking! Also a taxi in and out of Puerto Viejo is only $4 U.S each way.

Room Tip: Rooms on first level is the only way to go!

This was a lovely start to our costa rican vacation! Franklin at the bar makes the best banana daqueries and coladas! But the pace of the entire country is very slow, so don't expect your order to be ready as quick as in the US. The rooms were charming and clean. There are no TVs or AC but im assuming most guests are trying to get away from "it all" anyway. There are 2 friendly dogs and 2 cats that I enjoyed feeding as well as turtles and fish in a coy pond. It is decorated Soooo cute and the food was top notch! quesadillas and gauc specifically. We rented a car and drove the 3.5 hrs to Banana Azul from San Jose; the country seems very poor but this hotel was def up to "American" standards. If u are looking for a non-touristy place (compared to Vegas or cancun) this is a great relaxing oasis!
