The front desk was very helpful, when we had to move out of our room because of double booking they gave us a free upgrade. Shweet!! Awesome hostel and a great place to stay they have good bike rentals for cheap and the rooms and decorations are pretty cool also. Restaurant isn't to expensive and the foods good. Overall A++

very good for the price. i loved the decoration and style, the rooms were a little stuffy but what can you do...it's the caribe and it hoooottt. great location right next to the beach and close but not too close to the town. the restaurant there is reasonably priced and absolutely delicious. I would definitely stay here again.

J.T. and the staff at Kaya's Place were terrific. The room was comfortable and affordable. Located a very short walk from downtown was perfect. The beach across the street was excellent for swimming, the surf was very mild, the bottom sandy and a very gentle slope.

We had adjoining rooms for myself, my wife, my daughter and my mom. We rented the bikes that the hotel had available and road to and around town. PV has a lot of excellent eateries including Kaya's Place.

One caution- Don't try to walk on the black sand beach in the mid day sun. Near the water where the sand is wet it is fine but the dry sand is very hot.

We are already looking forward to visiting again.

Mark, Pat, Katy and Donna

Room Tip: Pay a little extra for air conditioning PV is very hot.

The hotel is adequate and clean. There are no mosquito nets, but there are lots of mosquitoes. So, in Puerto Viejo, unless you can afford top tier hotels, expect the bites...pura vida. There is no breakfast included which I was surprised at initially, but then was happy to have missed, having found a delicious breakfast spot called Bread and Chocolate. For students on a budget, this is probably a little upscale to the typical hostel and for families on a budget this is your low end hotel. I might stay there again but only because of its proximity to town. As a tip, ask for a room facing the road on the second floor as those will be the rooms privileged to enjoy "the Caribbean breeze". The casa and other rooms are behind the main building which blocks most air flow.

I stayed here as part of my tour group who was travelling across Costa Rica.

Room:
- Clean room with a living/sitting area and kitchen.
- Clean but small bathroom (no hot water but you don't need it cause it's really hot here).
- Air conditioning didn't work, but electric fans were provided. At night it cools down significantly but if you're going during dry season, it will be super hot all the time.
- Expect bunk beds in every room.

Location:
- Near the beach!!! But it's dark sand beach, so it's nice but not the nicest.
- On a main road, but not at the centre of the town.
- Minutes away from the centre.

Service:
- Everyone is super nice and extremely helpful
- Makes recommendations for tourists

Hotel Restaurant:
- Their food was excellent, especially for breakfast they have french toast which was AMAZING.
- SUPER SLOW service (they certainly run on tica time here)
- Friendly locals dine here too.

Kaya's Place is located directly across the street from Playa Negra, the black sand beach in Puerto Viejo. This location is perfect for two reasons: I can be at the beach in about 25 steps and it's a short walk from the rest of town (exactly where I wanted to be). The rooms were clean and the staff was helpful. We discovered a couple hours into our stay that our AC was not working and we were immediately given a larger room at no charge. Although there are no kitchen facilities, the staff let us store a few things in the refrigerator so we weren't forced to eat out for every meal. Loved our stay here and would stay here again!

Great location, slightly our of town and right by the beach, and beautiful birds outside your window. The bar and restaurant - Frankie's Cocina - is run by great people who also provide the highest quality food that is reasonably priced. Highly recommended!

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
The Door is Always Open at Kaya's Place... Kaya's Place is a 26 room lodge on the stunning Black Beach in Puerto Viejo, Costa Rica. Built in the Afro-Caribbean "Rustico" style, the hotel is artistic and unique. Local woods and materials have been used in their natural state, making each room different and beautiful. Every space you encounter will be a pleasurable experience. The sound of the waves is always in the background, soothing and tranquil, guaranteed to take you away from the stress of everyday life. Inside the hotel, you will find many places to relax. The reception area is more like a living room, with a gigantic sofa, television, people to chat with and view of the ocean. The large deck upstairs has a wonderful ocean view with hammocks and sofas - perfect for reading or taking a siesta. In the back, gardens line the walkway, filled with local plants and flowers. A covered sitting area in the garden offers another opportunity to meet and enjoy the company of others while you stay with us. Our restaurant is spacious and open with view of the ocean and a small creek with fish, water lilies, crab and other water life. Located in Puerto Viejo on the Caribbean Coast, the area is blessed with natural beauty in the form of dense jungle with impressive flora and fauna and some of the world's most beautiful beaches. Kaya's Place is part of the growing eco-tourism industry that supports the preservation of almost 2 million square meters of primary rainforest. Taxes from this industry support the many national reserves and efforts to maintain the natural resources. We are dedicated to preserving these resources while sharing it with all the people that come to know this amazingly beautiful part of Costa Rica. Our recent renovation of Kaya's Place was completed with the same philosophy. No lumber or materials were taken from the primary rainforest. Much was recycled wood or dead fall from local farms and lumber that had washed up from the ocean and rivers. With these natural and renewable materials, we achieved a unique character with rustic and artistic designs. Also all the walls are painted by hand, with many details and awesome drawings.
