I have only positive things to say about Puerto Viejo, my husband and I love the culture, the food, the people. Our stay at the treehouse however was nearly ruined by the inhospitable owner. He came to our beach house, didn't knock, and reproached us for having our shoes on (sandals on hardwood floors)... Then, later that night, as we were cleaning dishes, the water shut off, we couldn't clean, and even more of a bummer, we couldn't use the jacuzzi everyone raves about! And on leaving after our stay, the owner actually threatened to charge us more for not cleaning even though HE never once offered a solution to the water having shut off!
My skin still crawls when I think of the arrogant rudeness of the owner.
Just a warning.

I am recently married and my husband and I chose to make Costa Rica and the Tree House Lodge our honeymoon destination and we are so happy we did!! We stayed in the Beach House Suite and chose the 7-day Adventure Package that they offer. It was, by far, the most amazing vacation we have ever been on! The Beach House Suite is absolutely gorgeous and the bathroom and jacuzzi is out of this world! The service was incredible, the people were very friendly and fun, the surroundings were beautiful, and the adventures were absolutely amazing!! Everything was extremely well organized and it made this vacation the stress-free week we so desperately needed. All of the drivers were punctual, including our pick-up and drop-off in San Jose and they were all very skilled at navigating the Costa Rica roadways. We started our week off with a wonderful breakfast of fresh fruit, cheese, and warm breads served to us by the owner, Edsart, and then we were guided on a great tour of the Iguana Reserve located right on the grounds. Our tour guide, Booguie, took just the two of us on multiple tours throughout the week (Iguana Reserve, Indian Reservation, Waterfall tour, and an amazing 4-hour Jungle tour); he was extremely knowledgeable, dynamic, and a lot of fun! He really made these tours a wonderful and personal experience!!! Martin was responsible for coordinating our entire "Adventure Week," and he did an absolutely amazing job! He was always very helpful, organized, and great fun to hang out with!!! All of the staff always greeted us with a smile and a helping hand! Eillyn, the housekeeper, kept our house impeccable!! Antonio, one of the security guards, along with the rest of the grounds crew always made us feel safe and sound with their presence! Along with all of the tours, Martin also coordinated ziplining in the jungle canopy, a visit to the Jaguar Reserve (which was an amazingly wonderful experience), and a white water rafting experience which was also a total blast! Martin was also very helpful in showing us where to shop, rent bikes, go out to eat, how to acquire a taxi, and where to go to enjoy the nightlife! Words and pictures cannot describe how amazing this place and the people associated with it truly are! Thank you all for making this an amazing honeymoon that we will NEVER forget!!!

We've stayed here many times, and even now, traveling with our 2 year old, staying here is the best!
A truly eco-experience, relaxation and adventure combined.
We love to cook, we buy everything we need in the stores nearby (el duende gourmet is our favorite) but if we feel like eating out, the options are great too, la pecora nera, cafe viejo, pan pay and the guy who sells rice and beans near playa negra (you have to try it, he's the best)
Dont come here if you are the concrete-wall-typical-hotel type. This is a different world!

We stayed at the beach house for five nights and all in all had a fun time. (Interbus provided affordable and reliable transportation from San Jose and back.) The rustic wooden furniture, spiral staircase, sprawling bathroom, and constant sounds of wildlife were a refreshing escape. I loved that there were computer speakers in the kitchen, so that we could plug in our laptop and play our favorite music.

I really enjoyed receiving a platter of fresh fruit from the property everyday during our stay. We got sweet, juicy coconuts - the absolute best I've ever had - along with other local fruits like zapotes. Otherwise, getting food was an adventure. We rented bikes and bought breakfast items and snacks from a nearby grocery store. For lunch and dinner, we rode to various local restaurants. My favorite was Joanna's, which was a bumpy 20-minute ride away. The cuisine in and around Puerto Viejo had a rich Caribbean flavor.

Hiking in the jungle was a fun outing that we arranged through the Puerto Viejo office of tourism (instead of paying the Costa Rica Tree House's prices). It was an enjoyable experience, particularly watching the howler monkeys.

The beach, however, was quite unimpressive. The sand was coarse, the water was rough, and the sea bed very rocky. We decided to check out another one of the "best beaches" in the Punta Uva area and were similarly unimpressed. Although I didn't travel to Costa Rica for the beaches, this was somewhat of a disappointment. If you're looking for a picturesque, luxurious vacation, the Caribbean islands offer a much better experience. However, if you're looking for an adventurous eco-vacation, this is the place.

My husband and I stayed at the Tree House for a week and took advantage of their Adventure Package. I wouldn't change a thing! Our room, the Beach House, was simply amazing. Wonderfully secluded, we could have gone days without seeing anyone if we had wanted it that way. The folks there are so nice, though, that we often took our laptop to the reception area to access the free wi-fi, talk with Martin, and get his suggestions for what to do before or after the activities that had already been planned for us. He was always so helpful and just one of the nicest people we could have met. The resident tour guide is an amazing wealth of knowledge--i don't think we asked him a single question he couldn't answer. Everyone we met was the epitome of kindness and hospitality. When my husband and I left to go to Arenal, I was actually sad! I was even more sad when we arrived at our new destination and the man at the front desk made me cry within the first 12 hours of our stay (boooo!). We realized we should have just stayed put at the treehouse. It's beautiful, everything you could ever want is close by, the grounds and houses are clean, and the setting is tropical and romantic. You definitely don't want to miss out. It is a little on the pricey side for the area, but, believe me, it's worth every penny.

The Beach Suite at the tree house lodge... What a fantastic place for a breather! I'm from Los Angeles and have a hectic schedule, but i intended to make a REAL vacation outta this trip. I took a female friend, we went for a week.

If i had intended to try to work during the vacation at any point, it would have proven to be difficult due to the fact that internet is not available here and the only reliable service is in Puerto Viejo which is a short moped ride away. I didn't find this to be a setback at all though, as i had intended to 'live in the moment' and the lack of technology made it easier.

The staff is fantastic, the dogs are great, the bathroom is SICK!!!!

Martin is the best. Thanks bud! I'll see you soon. I'm coming back as soon as possible.

We have traveled all over Costa Rica for a month about three years ago. This time around we chose the Beach Suite at the tree house lodge to get away from our busy lives in New York to just lay back and give some space between ourselves and our 14 year old. And so we did.

There are a lot of reviews on this particular house and the property, so I will just say both are exceptionally relaxing and comforting! The stuff, as is the owner-Edsart, are very friendly, will cater to any requests you might have and give you some suggestions on places to go even if you do not ask. So, you will be well covered there. If you wish to sleep till afternoon, ask them to loose early morning calls for they might call you to suggest this or that. We also felt much protected by the stuff and secure!

Expect some visitors such as local monkeys, cats, dogs and other critters. We personally loved it for we have our own small "zoo" at home thus welcomed them all. One of the cats felt right at home and stayed with us for the whole 9 days making us feel very cozy. We repaid for her none stop affection and “cat’s job well done” by providing her (as all others) with cat food and snacks from the local supermarket we called #2 that is very well stuffed for both-pets and humans, and by asking you-keep it up if you choose to stay there 
If you love paying attention to small things, place some food around the wholes you’ll find on the ground around the house and watch for the crabs to come out a grab it-very entertaining the way they do it 
There is also a two finger sloth (still very young) living on the trees right in front of the balcony. Look for it up and around and you will surely find it. Bird watching/listening will be all yours to enjoy as well. Do not forget your binoculars-very useful. If you enjoy some gardening- you will find things to do all over the place 

Expect some light but costly shopping and cooking, for the lodge does not have any restaurant. They do offer light complimentary breakfast the first morning and then for a small fee on the fallowing mornings. We did not care much for daily/nightly walks, or $20 nightly taxi rides to restaurants around, nor for bicycling in a dark on badly damaged pavement to eat. Though did find that the two out of three restaurants we went to were ok.

Beach area is quite small and not cleaned of the falling leaves, twigs and branches but no UGLY garbage what so ever. Expect occasional passers by but we did have daily fun snorkeling around with nothing on. BTW, snorkeling is an eye-opener for those who enjoy discovering underwater magic and the reef will provide you with plenty of it.

To summarize it all up- if you wish to be left alone, dress very casual (if at all) have a layback vacation inside of the most given tours in Costa Rica and, at the same time, have a great house all to yourselves-go for it, you will be pleasantly surprised!

(Expect some Costa Rica internet/phone interruptions while making arrangements with the lodge. Just give things some time-all will come through and put together-promise 
