“Great adventure”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 25, 2007

We spent 3 days at the Tree house. It was a different experience to anything we previously had. Open plan with no windows or doors made you feel you were completely in the rainforest. Bats flying through the lounge at night, Lizards catching flies, crabs and crickets all paid us a visit as well as an Opossum whom we found in a kitchen cupboard. Only go if you have a flair for adventure then you wont be dissapointed

My husband and I stayed at the "Beach House" on the Costa Rica Treehouse property Nov 30th through Dec 6th. We found the property on the www.vrbo.com - "Vacation Rentals by Owners" website. Well, first of all, my husband was disappointed we could not see the beach from the house. It wasn't promised on the website but you have to admit that calling it a "beach house" was misleading. The bathroom was a nice surprise though. We drove five hours to get there after flying from New York. We were alittle naieve to do so and would not do it again. It was evening, rainy, dark, through the mountain and altogether hazardous. The first few days in the jungle were beautiful. It did rain every day and once or twice, it rained all day. But hey, it's the rain forest right. We thought we overpayed for the house at $144/night compared to what other folks were paying in that town but it was our anniversary. Just be forewarned, the house is pretty open. There are plenty of insects and rodents as you might expect in the jungle. You'll have to get use to the sounds. We are really thankful we weren't adventurous enough to stay in the actual tree house because it was a ways from where you had to park. We couldn't imagine lugging our luggage all that way. It was under construction anyhow. The roads in Peurto Viejo are as bad as everyone says they are. We were glad we paid for the extra insurance on the car even though we only realized it did not cover the tires on the way out of there. Thankfully nothing went wrong. The road getting there was fine until we got past Limon. We were stopped at a checkpoint on the way into the town so it was nice to have all of our paperwork readily available. We ate at the first place we saw because we were starving - Cafe Viejo, hands down overpriced but nice staff. We ate at the one steak house, Patagonia's, twice - loved the food, price, and owners. The food at Maxie's was also fantastic. Maxie's is one town over in Manzanillo. The beaches in Puerto Viejo were surprising small but plentiful. Soda Miss Holly in town deserves a mention for a great chicken burrito. We went horseback riding and ziplining. Both were enjoyable but we're all ziplined out since we've done it in another place. We left the beach house a day earlier than we expected and, frankly, would have left even earlier if we knew we could. We thought we had paid the full stay in advance. Once we knew we had to pay for the 7 days, we thought we'd be paying the weekly charge divided by 7 but were told "the seventh day is free" so we paid slightly more. And the dogs, my goodness, my husband was so sick of the number of dogs wandering the streets he didn't know what to do. I should mention that I was pretty surprised by the amount of garbage on corners. We left Puerto Viejo and checked into the Marriot in San Jose which was amazing and the perfect way to end our vacation - alittle a/c, tv, and bacon and eggs. Thanks Costa Rica!
