“Fantastic dining experience”
Reviewed February 14, 2013

Cafe Viejo is on main street and it opens at 6 pm for dinner. By 7:30 the place was packed. Four of us had dinner there, the pasta was hand made, the sauces were absolutely fantastic. Fresh ingredients, nothing canned. We received a free bruschetta appetizer to enjoy before our main course, which did not take long to arrive. We ended up passing our plates around because each dish was so delicious we wanted to share. The beef tenderloin with green peppercorn sauce was one of the best beef dishes I have ever tasted. The pizza didn't look that great, but we didn't order it so I am not sure how it tastes.

I am glad we found Cafe Viejo early on our trip so that we can come back again before we leave.

“Rip Off Restaurant”
Reviewed January 28, 2013

Started with being asked if we had reservations when place was completely empty. Hostess was surly and rude. Seated us at back of restaurant. Fortunately we were with locals who knew owner and we were then seated at 'better' table. Pizza was expensive and terrible, Rest of food was similarly indifferent. Waitress was slow and uncooperative. Owner tried to push most expensive wine on us. Refused our credit cards even though all six of us had cards that were good. Created an unnecessary hassle for us to go to cash machine, presumably because they didn't want to pay surcharge. Altogether terrible experience and left very poor taste on our first night out in Puerto Viejo. Plenty of other very nice options available.

“Good food and people watching”
Reviewed January 24, 2013

My husband and I resisted this restaurant for a long time as it's smack on the main road in Puerto Viejo. But on Dec 31st we decided to finally try it and we were pleasantly surprised. We got a delish complimentary shimp brushetta. The seafood salad was great and packed with octopus, calamari, fish, shimp and shellfish. Each of our pasta dishes was authentic and well prepared. Although the place was full, service was not slow. Midnight came and the owners (2 italian brothers) opened champagne magnums and shared with everyone. The location turns out to be a great place to watch the people and action on the street -without being in the midst of it. We went back a few days later and had another great dinner experience. Would recommend it to others.

“Authentic Italian where you'd least expect it”
Reviewed January 14, 2013

On recommendation from our innkeeper, my fiance and I headed to Cafe Viejo for dinner. The experience started out splendidly, as they brought us an order of bruschetta on the house, which was very tasty. We split an order of carbonara and a pizza with prosciutto. The carbonara was good, but the highlight was definitely the pizza. They certainly did not skimp on the prosciutto - it formed an entire sheet over the pizza, no daylight for the cheese. If that weren't enough, the prosciutto, and the pizza in general, was delicious! As a New Jersey native, I'm very discerning when it comes to pizza and pizza crust, and Cafe Viejo really hit it out of the park. Service was good, and the atmosphere was nice. We sat closest to the street and did some people watching.
Overall, a wonderful experience.
I cannot stress this enough- get the prosciutto pizza!

“Nice Pizza and Pasta”
Reviewed January 11, 2013

We enjoyed our Dinner in the Restaurant. Italian food seems very famous in Costa Rica but we did not mind since we are a big fan. We ate Pizza and Pasta and the taste was really good. Big portions too. The staff was friendly and attentive and we left for our hotel very satisfied.
