dannie and dave (the owners) are awesome. aside from being incredibly hospitable, organized and clearly responsible owners, they are so down to earth and make for solid conversation. Also, dave went to college in Kansas, and thats where I am originally from, so that's a plus. This establishment has guests who have extended their stay to 3 months! This is because, and i quote "during their 18 month travel period, this is the first place I have found a home." La ruka is home. The flow of wonderful people and beautiful location, la ruka has it all. They have a newly finished, outdoor kitchen, and as we speak the property keeps developing. If you want a warm place to stay, and great people. This is the place to be. La ruka, we'll be back soon.

Very clean rooms and bathrooms with hot water! The location is awesome for night life, surfing and everything else... Or you can hire a bike for cheap to venture to other towns. The place itself is beautifully laid out with lots of space and wildlife. It attracts and is owned by wonderful, helpful people!
La Ruka is one of the best hostels I have ever stayed in...
Was only meant to stay a few days and ended up nearly a month!

We stayed for a few nights and had a great time. I wasn't feeling well at arrival, so the owner offered to make fresh ginger and honey tea for me. Wow! We had a private room with shared bathroom. The bed was comfy and, although old, the bathroom was clean! They are in the process of updating the kitchen, we managed to make just a couple meals there. All the staff were exceptionally helpful and kind.
The only downside for us, the windows were screened but didn't actually close. This meant we had a lot of outside noise to deal with, and it actually got a bit cold one rainy night!
We would definitely stay here again if we return to Puerto Viejo. There are lots of great plans in store for the place too!!

We stayed there for just three or four days but we wished it was longer! the place is cozy, rooms are clean and the vibe is great - nice hangout area to meet new people, including a BBQ. The kitchen is a bit too improvised but still functional... Def recommend it!

I've traveled all over the world from Southeast Asia to South America and this place was one of the friendliest, cleanest, nicest staff and had one of the best all around atmospheres of any hostel/hotel I've ever stayed at. They pointed me in the right direction for great breakfast, helped with local bus times and routes as well as shuttle town information. Not to mention it has a great open air outdoor ambiance with a great kitchen and BBQ in the back. It truly helps you feel like you are on vacation.

Bienvenidos a tu hogar, este hostel es bilingual, pero por lo demas hablan ingles. This is a bilingual hostel that predominately speaks english. Every time you walk through the gate there are friendly faces sitting around the main table, having chats and smoking. I stayed here for about a week and made some incredible connections, it is truly very calming and feels safe, because it is. Often people who work there also live there creating a family environment. There is a guitar and hoops for check out and regular BBQ's and potlucks (great way to share meals and cut on costs). After traveling south I returned to la Ruka and felt like I was at home. Even when I wasn't dorming there I cooked my meals and spent time there. It's a super safe, clean and loving environment.
