“Nice place and staff, far from beaches”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 23, 2008

We stayed at El pizote, nice staff, nice place, nice rooms and clean, however the beaches are not near, "playa negra beach" is worst beach in area. Puerto Viejo is in general terms not safe town, don't waste your time in Puerto viejo, go to Punta Uva beaches, or Manzanillo..amazing caribean beaches! We stayed at Arrecife lodge at punta uva, is far the best option in all the area.

I stayed at El Pizote with a tour group on an educational trip to Costa Rica. It was one of the best places we stayed. I love the Caribbean coast, and the plant life at the hotel is gorgeous. The chef was really nice and we went to her private restaurant for dinner one night while we were there. The only complaint I have is that the showers often flooded the bathroom, but the bathroom floors were about 6 inches lower than the floor in our room, so the water never got into the room itself. It was one of the few places we stayed with hot water in the showers, so it was definitely a positive experience. The pool area is very attractive too, and I wish we'd been able to stay longer.

  • Liked — The grounds, the pool, and the service
  • Disliked — The showers

This "hotel" was without a doubt the worst hotel we stayed in in Costa Rica. It was extremely run down, for example, there was mildew on the soaps and towels and the sheets had holes in them, the place was infested with insects ect. This is a place that badly badly needs an overhaul.

We paid 65 dollars for a double room with a fan. In retrospect, we were incredibly stupid to pay this price, but we were simply exhusted from travelling and unwilling to trawl through the various hotels in Puerto Viejo. I would advise anyone, however, not to make our mistakes and explore their options more than we did.

In fairness to the hotel, I do have to say that the staff were very friendly and nice but I'm afraid that wasn't enough to make our stay any more enjoyable.

I was also not impressed by the town of Puerto Viejo at all. I found it sleazy and dirty. As far as i was concerned there were no redeeming factors to it all.

On a more positive note, however, we spent a few days in Panama on the Boca del Tores islands and had a simply amazing time there. The atmosphere on the islands was really really relaxing yet at the same time if you wanted to soclialise at night in the town there were plenty of excellent restauarants and bars to frequent.

So, to sum it up, I would advise people NOT to stay at this hotel and indeed to spend a little time as possible in Puerto Viejo. The trip in Panama was long and tiring but, it is REALLY REALLY worth going to.
