“Great Ocean Front Location”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 2, 2013

My partner and I stayed 9 nights at the Agapi and had a great time. The hotel is located next to the sea along the path that runs seaside from town to Cocles beach. Stasio and Cecelia, the owners, are very friendly and helpful. Breakfast is served in the open air dining area by the pool with a gorgeous view of the jungle and Caribbean. The fruit and juices are amazing. The pool is clean and refreshing and the cool water jacuzzi feels great on tired legs. The Sauna and Turkish steam bath are unexpected in the tropics but feel fantastic, especially at the end of a rainy day. We never felt crowded or bothered by guests or staff. The gardens are beautiful and the sound of the waves is so relaxing. The location is perfect, an easy walk down the path to town or the beach. The road side is well marked and there is parking if you have a car. The rooms are basic but clean (cleaned every day) and some have mini-refrigerators which are very handy. If you need something just ask.

Superficially, this is a beautiful apartment/hotel complex. Rooms vary hugely; some are beautiful, some are more basic. All of them are a bit shabby. They all require renovation and a lot more care. The apartments are extremely dark.

The owners are very friendly and helpful (e.g., they want through great pains organising nicer rooms for us than we had originally booked). The main problem is that one has to ask for everything. For example, there were no glasses in one of the kitchens and no toothbrush glasses in the bathrooms. The wooden chairs had no pillows, and the lighting was so poor that it was difficult even to play cards. Some showers only worked sporadically. All of this was rectified when we asked, but in a hotel of this price class this should all happen automatically.

The location is directly at the beach, but it is a beach where one cannot swim due to rocks. The next beach where one can swim is about 10 minutes walk along a poorly maintained path or along the road.

Breakfast was ok (fruits, pico gallo, toast), though one of us did not like it, so we went to a nearby bakery. It would have been nice to have a bar.

The price would be ok if everything were in good condition, but as it is, the price is about 40% too high.

Room Tip: Call the owners and ask them what they have available and would recommend; don't go by the pictu...

If you are looking for simple, clean and friendly this is as good as it gets. The sound of the waves will put ypu to sleep as the birds will wake you up. carabean style at its finest.
located a short distance from puerto viejo, in between the forest and the ocean with a pool, internet and breakfast.

We arrived in Cost Rica from Panama. We didn't had any rooms reserved and we were so lucky to meet Tasos the owner of hotel Agapi. He is the best -absolutely great person and hotel manager. They offered us a large apartment with separate bedroom spacious kitchen big bathroom and garden.Just a few steps out of the room was the beach (not good for swimming) but at only 4minutes walking next to the hotel you get one of the best beaches to hang out in Puerto viejo.Breakfast was ok ,pool was nice , I wish I could stay longer and try the hammam and massage treatments now opening ,too!Cleaning was excellent as sheets and towels were changed every day.Friendly reception staff providing all travelling information. You can easily reach center of puerto viejo as hotel is located only 10min walking. On the way you can find numerous restaurants and bars ,worth it to try food or cocktails! We found excellent little shops closeby like Bamboo Caribe.
Thank you for your hospitality Tasos! We will definitely come back!!!!

The hotel and grounds are very nice and clean. You can go directly from there back garden to the beach (no swimming), next swimming beach is a 5 minutes walk through the forest by the beach. The room was spacious with a private kitchen and fridge. Water was very hot and the air condition worked. I had my private balcony with ocean view too. A little buffet stile breakfast is included into the price. The swimming pool was very clean but not deep, with a little waterfall and a whirlpool. the Sauna and a steam bath are a nice, welcoming break if it's not sunny.
The greek - costa rica couple who runs it was very nice and friendly.
Next time I come back together with my girlfriend.
It is a very good option, if you are a group of friends, because they have bigger apartments too.

When you're at Agapi, you feel like you're in the middle of nature - far from the hustle and bustle of civilization - and yet you're just a short walk from Puerto Viejo (I recommend the beach-side jungle walk to the road). As you relax by the pool, all you can hear are the waves, the birds and the monkeys. Agapi has rooms and apartments for all tastes and budgets - some with breathtaking views!
