We stayed in the Beach House and what a incredible experience that was. The rooms just like the entire place were very clean and well kept. We will not have to think twice about where we will stay on our next trip. There is no air conditioning in the Beach House but the breezes kept us cool at night and the view from the large balcony was perfect. The Caribbean breezes are amazing! Daily breakfast (included in price) was great and the service was the best we had our entire stay in Costa Rica. The beach itself was terrific and at times we were the only people in sight. Thank you again for such a memorable trip and we cannot wait to visit you again!

Room Tip: Beach House has a great ocean view.

The staff, and location of Perla Negra are ideal. The rooms are satisfactory, Sheets are too small for beds, which seem to be a problem come the middle of the night. The breakfasts are lovely, although for us late nighters. they end too early ( 9 am) Overall we had a great time, Tennis swimming, and pool table. Outdoor kitchen, fully supplied to buy your food in town, and cook a meal for yourselves. Always nice.!

Nice, quiet hotel located next to the beach. We stayed on the upper floor with a view of the beach which was beautiful. Grounds are beautiful and kept very clean. Service was great, the people at the front desk went out of their way to help. A tasty breakfast was served every morning. The hotel is located 1 mile from Puerto Viejo - you can either walk or take a taxi. We did walk the beach there which is nicer and shorter than the road. The beach area is great with nice dark sand instead of the white we was used to. The only drawback I saw was there is no restaurant so you have to go to town for lunch or supper. Also the bed linens could fit a little better. Otherwise, this is a very good place to stay.

This hotel was a wonderful experience. It's pretty, the service is great, and it's right on the beach. Lovely, private and a terrific deal. The little town of Puerto Viejo is a fun little funky place. Everyone and everything is so laid-back. If you want to visit the less developed area of Costa Rica, this area is a great place to start.

I knew that this hotel was going to be minimal but I didn't realize exactly what that meant!

First the good -

1. Everyone that worked there was exceptionally nice and helpful!
2. The beach was almost always empty.
3. The food was pretty good.

The B A D

1. I learned very quickly why the beach was almost empty. The surf is V ERY powerful. They advise that you don't go in over your belly button! I didn't even go in that far and was knocked down! It is NOT safe for small children or people that are not strong swimmers. They also said not to go out after the fourth break. While we were on the beach, we saw a 19 year old pulled onto the beach from the water, given cpr and taken to the hospital. It was horrible!

2. The room was filthy! There was crud all over the floors and in the corners!
The cleaning girls did not change the sheets daily which was bad w/ all the sand we apparently had brought from the beach.
The sheets did NOT fit the beds and it was so annoying
The shower is a hazard. The electrical work was sticking out by the shower head and my husband (electrician) said if I touched it while standing in the water, I could be killed!
Bats... oh yes! We had over 5 bats IN our room. At first, we thought it was b/c we left the doors open. After the first day, we left the room closed. We still continued to have bats come in through the cracks in the ceiling. They squeak like mice and then flew around at night! I know they wouldn't hurt us but come on! Night after night of this and then the manager said, "They are harmless. Even the scorpions sting isn't bad. I kept finding them in my bed." This didn't make me feel any better.

3. The town is not particularly safe. When we asked a resturant owner if he felt safe, he didn't hesitate to say no. Make sure you take a cab into town - they are cheap.

4. There is trash everywhere! On the way to town trash in the road, on the sides of roads, on the beach... etc.

5. Order your food as stated on the white board or you will have to go into town.

6. There were always crabs in the pool! Uninvited crabs!

Just know that this is bare minimum hotel. The water is not safe at all! The bus ride from the plane is at least 4 hours long. The roads are horrible.

The place had everything they promised except no warm water. However it was definitely overpriced. We paid the same at a fantastic resort the other side of town.

All I can say is that this place is exceptional. Great food, service, and fantastic vibe overall. I love that the beach is right across the street from the hotel.

The service is very helpful and accommodating. They helped me organize a business meeting in an area of the restaurant overlooking the beach across the street.

I stayed in one of their condominiums that had 2 1/2 bathrooms and a kitchen to prepare my own food. The bed was very comfortable.

The hotel is right outside of town, so it provides a quite, private, relaxing atmosphere, and it's only a $2 to $3 taxi ride to town to experience a night out of town. I love going here for my business trips for this reason.

I highly recommend staying here.
