We loved aspects of this trip, and would recommend it to anyone. The Animal Rescue Center is a wonderful place, and certainly, you're more up close and personal with animals than you would be in any zoo (though they are quick to make the distinction that it is NOT a zoo). It's hard not to leave here inspired and wanting to do more to help these creatures.
the Chocolate Lady was fascinating, taking you through the process of making chocolate as well as detailing aspects of Bribri Culture. And of course, the chocolate is delicious and we regret that we didn't buy much much more.
The only reason it's not 5 stars: we assumed (incorrectly and foolishly) that these would be far more intimate tours. The Animal Rescue Centre was very busy (though they worked hard to break down into smaller tour groups), and the Chocolate Lady...well, let's just say we were embarrassed that other members of the group didn't seem to understand that just because a culture is different from United States culture, it's not "weird," a word they continued to repeat. It did color our experience, and kept us from the waterfall (we cabbed it home). These activities were among our favorite of our Costa Rica trip, but we did wish we had prepared for a less intimate experience.
