“Beautiful Hostel in Natural Setting”
Reviewed May 22, 2012

We stayed at the Walaba for two nights in May 2012, choosing a private two-person bedroom with shared kitchen and bath. The property is beautiful, planted thickly with local plants, and the open-air buildings circulate the ocean breeze. It is probably the prettiest hostel I've seen. We spent two days lounging in the hammocks, renting bicycles ($6) for the trip to Puerto Viejo, and chatting with fellow travelers. We could see and hear the howler monkeys from our patio, and the beach was a two-minute walk down the road.

Two words of caution: This is definitely a hostel, with the usual hostel problems of noise and drunkenness, so it might not be ideal for older travelers. Also, when we visited, everyone in the hostel caught a nasty 24-hour stomach virus that put a damper on our trip. I don't know whether this is endemic to this hostel or just something that happened to be going around at the time.

The Location of this hostel is great, because it is next to one of the most beautiful beaches I have ever seen. The Hostel owner is also very friendly.

Unfortunately we checked out a day early. We had the worst nights sleep of our entire trip, this was due to the fact that the mosquito net did not cover our bed, and the window didn't have any grates to stop insects flying in, therefore it was a choice of having our window wide open with bugs flying in or closed which made the room very damp and stuffy.

My friend was sick that evening and ended up coming back to the room with a trail of ants running up her leg because all the bathrooms are outside. The room also felt very damp but this is due to the climate of the place as well. I also ended up having a shower with a giant spider - this is sort of to be expected because you are in a jungle.

This place is very rustic and perhaps it was just down to the room that we had? I know that a couple of rooms did look better.

I booked to stay here for 4 days and ended up staying almost 2 weeks. This is a beautiful hostel surrounded by the jungle and amazing wildlife. Just minutes from the scenic Punta Uva beach, Walaba is an absolute steal, I payed just $10 a night for a dorm room. It is the cleanest hostel I have ever stayed in with some lovely communal areas, hammocks, swinging chairs, and a big lounge area.

What made the experience has to be the staff, Maria was extremely helpful with anything that I needed (including looking after me when I was ill), and I met some great people.

As a 22 year old female safety is very important and I could not have felt safer here.

Thanks for a great stay!

Walaba is a clean, attractive, beautifully placed hostel right by a gorgeous quite sandy beach. I had a fantastic and comprehensive welcome on my arrival that made me feel right at home (important for a single female traveller). I had a comfy double bed with mosquito net in the dorm. There's plenty of places to relax and read or meet other people. Bike hire was $6 For the day to cycle up to puerto viejo and around the local area where there was lots of wonderful wildlife. I could have happily stayed here for much longer. Two thumbs up.

Walaba is a great place to spend a few days and relax at. Beautiful tree house nestled in the jungle located super close to the beautiful beach of Punta Uva 1. Great atmosphere, super chill vibe, definitely not a party hostel but an awesome place to hangout and start a night before heading into town or if you want to crash early that totally doable as well. The hostel was very clean, provided mosquito nets over the bed, and has a great commons area and kitchen to hang out in and meet people. The wifi and water would go out every once in a while (they have their own well system) but one shout down to the caretaker and it was taken care of.
Note that the hostel is located in Punta Uva, about a $10 taxi ride outside of Puerto Viejo, but it is definitely worth it and the hostel is much nicer than a lot of the places that are in town. At the hostel make sure to rent a bike during the day, and check out the beaches in Manzanillo and Punta Uva 2. I wish that more hostel were like this one, definitely worth checking out and will for sure stay here again if I'm ever in the area.
