I stayed in this so called hotel for some nights. The staff was out of money and begging all the time and the customers were robbed in the hotel by the staff. The kitchen was dirty as the cooking equipment in the kitchen. The price of the room was avarage for taying in Puerto viejo, so there are many places for the same price as the Hotel Puerto Viejo got, but these other hostels and hotels are offering better standart for the same price as the Hotel Puerto viejo got. I would not recommend this nest of thieves to anybody ...

We arrived in Puerto Viejo at 9pm during a holiday and everything was full. After going to 5 or 6 other places without a single open bed, we showed up at Hotel Puerto Viejo and met Kurt, the owner. He too was booked solid but he actually offered us to stay in his house upstairs. This seemed a little weird at first, but it was clean, comfortable, and definitely better than the streets that were our only other option. The next day we were moved into a private room. It was cheap, close to everything, had hot water, a clean kitchen, and a super chill environment. We definitely enjoyed it.
The only thing that worried me was the lack of security - we locked some important things in a special room with other valuables near the lobby and whenever we needed to get anything, they would just hand us the key to go back there. It made me worried about who was going in the room alone with our stuff. Other than that, it was a great stay =)

I returned to Puerto Viejo after a while and stayed at Hotel Puerto Viejo and enjoyed it thoroughbly.
Nice clean rooms, great service from Kurt and Barbara and as ever the most interesting place in town.
All of one's needs under the same roof ,some new additions and new chilling areas and the best information on where to eat and which excursiones to take.

Thanks and I'll be back.

We stayed here recently and quite liked the place. Its pretty good value, there is a relaxed atmosphere, the garden is pleasant and we slept well. It feels spacious (we had come from another place nearby that was very cramped), the double rooms are a decent size. Staff are friendly. Its slightly weird, there are some characters, but Puerto Viejo in general seems to be packed full of these! I would recommend it if you're on a budget.

Great location, one block away from the main street which helps quieten things down. I stayed in an upstairs room which had big open windows which were bug screened and breezy. Bed wasn't overly comfortable but I've slept on worse. Ceiling fan was about the size of the room which was awesome. Not a lot of privacy to be had, but more than a dorm. All doors can be locked from outside and inside via padlock. Spacious common rooms with wifi, electrical plugs and a pool table ( which costs $1 to play!? ). One staff member was the most helpful and pleasant woman I've ever run into, she really knew her stuff and went out of her way to help. One local who hangs out there is extremely friendly and walked me around town, checked bus schedules for me and asked for nothing in return. The place is open quite late and as such, attracted quite a few.. Creepy people. Made for some rather awkward conversations with people in various states of mind. Lock your valuables in your room or keep them with you at all times ( advice given to me from a local ).

It's not bad, but it's not good. Worth a night or two if you wanna get amongst some local culture. Pura vida!

Room Tip: Get one down the back. Upstairs rooms are great for reducing heat due to airflow and huge ceiling fa...

Above all the things that were mentioned in other reviews - the hostel has some long term guests and one of them, Jack, had decided that its great to salute "HEIL HITLER" to guests from Israel (who are jewish). After I confronted him saying this is truely out of line, Barbara, the staff member, told me not to cause a scene because there are other guests as well and that they are dealing with it. They talked to him (and shouted at him) but that was it, he kept on making comments about Israel and when I told them that this is not ok, they told me I am exhagurating and that this guest is staying for a long time and never caused trouble. She actually told me that he had too much to drink and that I was the one creating the problem by reacting to his act. Never in my life have I been so humiliated and treated this way - just because a guy pays well to the hostel does not mean they need to support his antisemitic acts. It is a matter of principal (and not money) the way you act against such incidents - if this guy would sexually harass a girl in the lobby (which I am not sure he has not already) would they still say "Don't make a scene, there are other guests in this hostel you know"? The owner has all the time been apathetic to the situation and did not care at all. When I told them that we are leaving, since they refused to take action and kick this guy out, they said "this is the best solution". It is a shame that there are still people that react this way. Needless to say we took our bags and moved to another hostel and are going to report this to the police in the morning. Do yourself (and the human kind) a big favour and do not support this place.

As soon as we stepped off the bus we had somebody hassling us to stay here - I feel as though hostels that need to solicit business are already lacking in some other department (reputation?).
The price is right! $10/night per person for a smallish room. We had one upstairs which is a great novelty during the day. Unfortunately the screens substituted for windows & curtains do nothing for the noise of the bar next door or the early morning sunshine.

There was 1 hot shower but all bathrooms were of average cleanliness and shower downstairs lack hooks for clothes/towels. You need to ask reception for toilet paper and there is almost a halfway house style vibe with the live-ins in the common areas.

Service was minimal but reasonable - lacked mentioning the toilet paper situation though and failed to pass on we had already paid for our room when we went to leave.

Wouldn't stay here again as for the price of 2 people, a little more cash goes a long way in this town!
