“Fill up on chocolate, history, and community potential”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 24, 2013

The farm is owned and run by a very cool family who are eager to see their chocolateering innovation take storm on the Caribbean coast. Traditionally you have your growers and your processors, and rarely are the two the same person. They are teaching local cacao growers their process for fermenting and forming the chocolate bars into sellable final products, inviting growers to festivals in Puerto Viejo and training local would-be-rivals to produce their own chocolate. The tour involves a brief history of the land, a climb to the top of their property for a wonderful view of the Caribbean coastline where you can walk out on a raised deck and sample aztec hot chocolate, varieties of dark chocolate from surrounding farms, and combine those with flavors like curry, ginger, cayenne pepper, mint, and basil. So good! Finish up with a tour of their coffee-making process and a scoop of rich chocolate in the process of being turned into its delicious bar form. By the time you get to the gift shop, you're so full of chocolate you won't even particularly want to buy more (this should be noted by Caribean ;P )

“Informative and enjoyable tour!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 24, 2013

Caribeans chocolate tour was an amazing, informative experience. Not only did we learn about the chocolate making process and history, but also how Caribeans is driving an artisan chocolate movement in the Puerjo Viejo region and educating growers to produce their own chocolate. I was amazed by how different chocolate from different farms/ beans tasted based on different growing conditions when put through the same process otherwise. The tour includes a very interesting tasting session with more chocolate than you can possible eat, and will definitely leave you buzzed. The sandwiches, desserts and iced coffee drinks at the cafe are also absolutely amazing!

“Delicious and informative!”

My Mom and I came here for coffee and heard about the chocolate tasting/tour experience, neither disappointed us!! I'm not even a coffee drinker but this stuff was GOOD and reasonably priced. There's a cold room where you can taste different kinds of chocolate before you buy, which was such a cool idea.
After finishing our coffee we went on a tour with Paul who showed us the cacao forest, how they harvest the fruit and then went through a truly amazing chocolate tasting experience. I honestly loved this chocolate better than the mass-produced chocolate because everything is organic and void of all that refined sugar that gives you that big glucose spike and crash, their chocolate doesn't do that. I bought about 20 bars and brought them back with me and plan on simulating the chocolate-tasting with friends!

“Interesting tour and loved the chocolate tasting”

We enjoyed hiking through and learning about their cocoa farm. With a beautiful view we got to sample chocolate, free of any additives, from local farms. The best part was discovering how great chocolate can taste when dipped in various different herbs!

“Great tour, worth getting out of the sun for an afternoon!”

The other reviews are right - it's a great tour from a very knowledgable, very passionate owner who hopes to create a chocolate renaissance among small cacao growers in the Puerto Viejo region. We learned a lot about low tech, sustainable growing and processing, and the "single farm" "bean to bar" chocolates were delicious. Worth doing! Bought a lot of chocolate to bring home and share with others. Thanks, Jeff!
