What a great tour! This was not part of our original plans, but I am so glad we stumbled across the tour information at the Farmers Market in PV. The forest is just outside of PV and they only give tours on Tuesdays and Thursdays I think. Paul and his wife are from the States, were very enthusiastic and treated us to a personalized tour of the forest. It was a pretty nice hike up the hill (you will sweat), but it's well worth it. As mentioned in other reviews, you get to sample different grades and blends of REAL chocolate (not the over-processed kinds we are used to here). I am still amazed (and annoyed) when I look at the ingredients label of some of my favorite chocolate from here...you will not see that kind of chocolate on this tour. After sampling, you get to see Paul's "state-of-the-art" roasting and chocolate processing facility (simple, but effective). The whole "bean to bar" process was not just educational, but downright fascinating at times.

I really respect their dedication and sustainablity efforts. For me, this is one of those tours that stay with you long after you leave. The tour lasted +/- 2.5 hours and was well worth the price of admission. Highly recommend.

Almost forgot...be sure to taste the raw cocao beans (ripened of course) right off the tree...(it's not what you would you expect...but YUM!).

Thank Carl W

We visited Caribeans cocao forest for the tour and were taken back by such beauty of the forest. We corrosponded with Paul prior to our visit in regard to cacao roasting and coffee roasting. We are a small batch coffee roasting company and found his knowledge and passion for his craft impressive and sincere. Ikea lead us on the first leg of the tour explaining the ecological importance of allowing the cacao forest to be a forest blending with other plants and not a clear cut monoculture. Ikea explained in detail everything from harvesting and fermintation of cacao, to spotting disease of plants and there efforts to help other small farmer produce finer cacao. The second part of our tour consisting of Paul and Ikea preparing a tradional chocolate drink, this is not your Hersey hot chocolate. Caribeans hot beverage was full of spice and chocolate, real chocolate, no chemicals or preservatives. Not for the weak tastebuds for sure, you have to try it. Paul and Ikea also set up a chocolate tasting of differents cacao from small native farmers and chocolates with different cacao to sugar ratios. What was most interesting with the tasting were the raw chocolate, and the different spices. Ginger, cinnimon, rosemary and galic, this was a chocolater experince like no other. The view from the mountain ridge where we had the chocolate tasting was perfect, the carribean, could not have been better. You have to do a little hiking up and down the paths but if was not that strenuous and its great to be in the forest, watch out for the cute little red frogs I things those were the poision dart frogs. We toured Pauls roaster facility and it was simple, functional and fabulous. This is a micro roaster with macro taste, on a side note Paul roast great Costa Rican coffee, be coffee roaster myself, I always appreciate a great cup of coffee. Our tour went past sunset and we could have talked with Paul and Ikea alot longer, but it looks like we just have to go back. This tour is one of those hidden gems that is well worht the visit, Caribeans is doing a great job promoting guality chocolate and coffee, helping local cacao farmers and being good enviromental stewards.

Paul and Jeanne invite us to do this tour and we regret that we didn´t do it before, the place, the history ,the new projects and of course, the different chocolate that they offer.
Really interesting to learn about cacao, how they do from scratch to the last step. The deck where they do the degustation, is absolutely amazing, with a view that is really hard to have in this town.
Also was super interesting the link that they have with the indigenous tribes to create a Fair trade sustainable business model.
If you are a chocolatier or just a chocolate lover, you MUST do this tour. This family of chocolate makers will make you fall in love of this cacao land and the beautiful people working together.
This Organic bean-to-bar chocolate tour is a MUST, I repeat!

Caribeans Caffee & Chocolate will offer you SO much more than what the title express... The staff always has a beautiful smile on their faces (and how to blame them? They are surrounded by good food, music, views and vibes) and your order on their hand! The ice-cream is out of this world (DO try the passion fruit one!) and the meals are generous and appealing! Combine that with the only place where you can enjoy of a glorious sunset in Puerto Viejo and you have yourself a perfect little spot to chill, check your internet life or simply enjoy of a GREAT cup of fresh CR´n coffee! ;)

Paul, the chocolate maker of Caribeans, and Ikea of Global Creek have created the most inspiring, educational, intelligent, sustainable practice, living, business and research center! The tour was meant to be 2hrs, but turned into 4hrs with tons of info, questions on our part, and delicious samplings of the best bean-to-bar chocolate ever! A must... and never support or buy Hershey/Cadbury/etc again. Child labor and fake ingredients are not necessary in the world.
