“Fun in the Carribean, not for one”
Reviewed April 13, 2012

the zipline tour was AWESOME. I went on another zipline that just didn't compare to the enthusiastic, fun guides at Atec. However, it is not easy to go on a tour here, or anywhere else in Costa Rica while alone. I was traveling alone and unfortunately could not take a tour anywhere. :( But Raul at Atec offered to take me on a tour to the waterfalls. He was great! Enjoy Puerto Viejo, the city is not like anything else.

“Excellent tours and knowledgeable guides”
Reviewed February 25, 2012

We (one couple with an almost 6-year old child) booked two tours with ATEC. We were very happy with their services. The young lady who helped us choose was of good advice and the guides were all part of the communities they were introducing us to. ATEC is definitely the way to go to discover all that Puerto Viejo has to offer while supporting a local non-profit organization that works to preserve the environment and the many cultures of the area.
We took a day trip to Yorkin, a village of indigenous Bribri Indians, about 2 hrs from Puerto Viejo (1 hour drive plus 1 hour in a dug-out canoe). Our guide was the son of the founder of the local women association that helped preserve the cultural roots of the community while providing a sustainable economy for the village and preserving the environment. He was on the shy-side but open to share his knowledge and culture if you asked questions. His mom gave us a presentation before lunch to tell us more about the roots of the organization and the progress over the years. The community is very welcoming and its people are eager to share their knowledge with visitors. We had a wonderful day trip and would consider staying overnight if we come back.
The second trip was a 1/2 day walk through the Manzanillo Preserve. Omar, our guide, grew up there and had a lot to share about the area, its people, flora and fauna. He also had a good sense of humor and kept our daughter interested the whole time. He had us go through a private garden that had tons of local trees, plants and fruit and had us guess their names (we live in a Caribbean neighborhood in Brooklyn so it was not too hard for us!!). We also went off the beaten path on the several occasions to see monkeys, ants, snakes and other animals and and flora (hence the reason why local guides are so important to have if you really want to see things).

“good service and the friendliest smile”
Reviewed January 29, 2012

Booking a trip at A.T.E.C is nice,; Sharon helped out really friendly and her cheerfull advice on what to see made me smile all day: so friendly.

I booked a half-day trek to Manzanillo. Try to get Tino as a guide: he is the best! Even the short walk in his homegarden was an adventure as he made it like a quiz to question what was growing there... He doesn´t overwhelm you with his knowledge, but knows how to point the things you want to remember and he makes sure you´ll do that. And you get to taste the best fruit in the area!

“ATEC provided us with such wonderful experiences with well-educated and fun-loving guides”
Reviewed January 11, 2012

As a university professor, I used ATEC for a study abroad course focused on ecotourism
and sustainable development. The staff at ATEC were incredibly helpful and flexible in
working with me to create a series of fun and educational experiences for students. ATEC is a true leader in community-based tourism initiatives and is dedicated to ensuring that tourism is a positive force for local individuals and communities. They offer a wide variety of affordable tours to choose from and work with wonderful, knowledgeable local guides. Students all loved their experiences and rated ATEC very highly. I'm looking forward to working with ATEC on my next course to Costa Rica!!

“Great Tours from a wonderful community-based non-profit”
Reviewed September 18, 2011

This is the best place to book tours in Puerto Viejo. Surrounded by a green chain link fence on the main street across from the two story shopping center it can be easy to miss.
