“Loved This Place For Our Family!!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 23, 2012

We stayed in the Frutepan house in January of this year. It had the perfect amount of space for our family of eight. Plenty of room for the kids to roam. The only thing I really didn't like was the stains on the sheets and towels. The kitchen sink rags were not good either. So when I went to town I bought new ones. Other than that everyone was very helpful in the office and would call taxi's for us or order pizza. Eventhough the house was next to the others it felt very private. We loved the outdoor living area and spent much of our time there. Beware of the beach in front. It has a great deal of coral. We just took a short walk around the corner to a great beach for the kids to play at. Miss this place already.....would love to come back with adults only to experience another side of Puerto Viejo.

The setting for this property is perfect. That is the only thing. We rented La Konga for one week, and stayed one day. The accommodation was dirty, termite droppings, bugs, worn and stained linen. One toilet and the coffee pot didn't work. The worst was the smell of mold throughout, including in the mosquito netting. It was impossible to sleep in this smell and filth. The internet access was not working. We left early in the morning after our first night. They did refund 50% of our rent. I would not recommend this to anyone.

Room Tip: Don't stay here.

My husband and I rented here. I know it's a big house for two people, but we were expecting family to visit. First of all, La Caracola is a family owned compound where many family members own homes which are very close to each other. You will not have privacy or quiet here, especially if you stay in the Frutepan house. There are people walking through your lounge, workers on mobile phones, all night parties on weekends (there was a loud party by family members who own the compound. We had to leave our beds at midnight to ask for some quiet, and still it continued). There are cars and motorcycles coming in and out and what's worse, you will hear the neighbors no matter what they do. Because the owners don't live in the vicinity, you will have no one to help you with any requests, the receptionist is a very young, inexperienced girl which to me seems like she's there to take reservations only. There is staff on site to help with cleaning and linens, but there is no property manager on site. In general, it is NOT a place to relax. The positive is that the kitchen is well stocked, the staff is nice and you're a stones throw from the beach. If you like rustic, this is the place to stay. You may try your luck and stay there when the other houses are vacant. But if you're looking for something like a quiet home away from home and you're used to nice hotels, this might not be the one.

Room Tip: Don't stay in the "Frutepan" house. It's surrounded by too many houses and a park...

We stayed in the beachfront house. The property is nice, well managed, the staff is very friendly, as were the neighboring guests, some of whom are long term. The beach is immediately in front of the property. The main, beach-facing house is old and needs renovation, but was very comfortable and well equipped. The 4 casitas behind the main house were very cute and at least was recently built/renovated, so the kitchens and bathrooms didn't need renovation. With our rental we got a housekeeper, a wonderful lady, for 4 hrs per day, who also was ready to help with cooking and getting groceries if we pleased. The beaches were beautiful, the coral snorkeling was awesome. The area around Playa Chiquita is cute and quiet, 4 km away from the town of Puerto Viejo. Don't shop for groceries in the three mercados within 1.5 km of La Caracola - you will pay as much or more for groceries than you would in northern US and Canadian grocery stores. If you have reasonably priced transportation (taxi would work if you don't go more than once per week). Ask around for the name of a small town with a mercado where you will pay non-tourist prices for groceries, or ask the housekeeper if she can pick up some groceries for you.

We stayed there for two weeks and we all loved it. We stayed in the Frutapan which was perfect. Each room has their one bathroom the kitchen and living area was beautiful. We had the beach right in front of us, falling asleep to the sounds of the waves. We could snokel right on our beach front. The staff was very nice and help us in any way the could. I highly reccomand this place and hopefully I will be able to go back. If you need pictures just ask me and I will email them to you.
