Looking for a great hostel in PV? This is it! Excellent facilities, kind hosts, abundant wildlife, quiet, excellent location, and the price is right! Olaf and Katy made us feel like family. We loved chilling in the hammocks, watching the frogs, butterflies, and honey bears, and joking around with Olaf!

Room Tip: We liked the room at the back upstairs - quiet, private and reasonably priced.

Puerto Viejo is a really great beach resort but can feel a little dangerous and sketchy at times; Vista Verde is a great option if you want some where safe, clean and welcoming. The German owners were very kind and helpful, we were staying at Puerto Viejo for a birthday weekend and the owners even brought my friend a birthday card and a cake. I would say this place is best for families, couples and friends that want to relax and not best for people that want a crazy drunken time. It is a little out of town and I'm not sure if it would be safe to walk to and from the hotel at night, alone.

We're very glad and lucky to choose the hotel in Puerto Viejo.
Clean room, quiet place and useful kitchen. The garden is very special and wonderful. We saw many birds, butterfly, squirrel and green-black frogs.

The location is perfect for being close enough to town with walking & biking convenience to everything you need, but also feels serene and private in its quiet garden setting, set further off the main road. Olaf & Kathy were very welcoming and made us comfortable the whole time. They were always available when we needed to ask a question and provided us with very helpful information. Their friendly presence created a laid back atmosphere. We stayed for about 5 nights and happily cooked almost every meal in the kitchen, which was kept clean and orderly. The best beach to swim & surf is about a 10 minute walk down the main road to the right or you can take a more beautiful path through the woods- cross the road and go through the Crocodile Surf Camp to enter the path. They do not have internet access, but another guest had a laptop and was able connect to the neighbor's wifi. Water gets nice and hot. We stayed in a private room with a shared bathroom for $22/night- what a bargain for the quality! The only aspect that matched the low price was that the mattresses are not the most comfortable. Otherwise, a night's stay was worth much more. We will definitely stay there again in the future and will recommend it to others.
I had a medical issue to take care of while there and Olaf pointed me towards the doctor on the main road. He was very helpful (though a bit expensive- $60) and sent me to Hone Creek Clinic to get my lab testing. His consultation enabled me to skip the long wait for their doctor and go right to the lab. They charged only $20 and prescribed me a medication that they did not charge me for. If you think you have leishmaniasis, tell Olaf & Kathy, they will help you get to the doctor and get tested to make sure.

Room Tip: Downstairs room mattress most comfortable

We actually found this place on Trip Advisor. Kathy and Olaf provide lovely rooms with a communal kitchen available for use. The price is extremely reasonable - $25 for a couple.
Our first room was their smallest but was private and had its own bath. Lots of places to put stuff. For the last night we moved upstairs and the shared bath and shower rooms were right off of our room. They kept our valuables safe, gave us great advise about where to go and places to eat. We wound up preparing several meals on site, one with a couple we met also staying there. This was our least expensive part of our trip to Cost Rica. And the final morning I spent time in the garden and saw a spider monkey hanging out in their noni tree. He curiously came closer to me as I shot photos of him rather than running away. We never did see the sloths who hang out in the garden as well, but the Italian fellow had seen them for several days. Highly recommended.

We rented a private room and really enjoyed this Hostel. It is just off the main drag in Puerto Viejo and you can walk to restaurants, supermarkets and the bus stop. It seemed the owners were constantly cleaning even the outdoor communal area (with a roof but open air) was spotless. Kitchen was well equipped and they will let you do laundry there if it is a sunny day (no dryer, have to line dry) My only dislike about this cute place was the frogs they have in the terrarium upstairs. They are cute to look at but when all 9 of them are croaking away it is VERY loud. I am not talking peaceful sound machine loud, much louder. If you have a room on the first floor it would be heaven!

Very nice place and friendly people. Just outside of town so you could just relax in the hammocks! Within a 5 minute walk you are in the busy town centre. Nice rooms, clean, kitchen for use and nice owners!
