Owner description: It is our pleasure to introduce to you Terraventuras Jungle Expeditions. We are a well established and certified tour agency in Costa Rica since 1998. We provide tours with a dynamic team of experienced local guides who will make the tours interesting, enriching and with great fun. We can make up any package suitable to your needs, including transportation, accommodations and various tours throughout Costa Rica; however we are specialized in the Caribbean area. Some of the tours provided are:- Adventure tours; such as canopy, Jungle adventure and horseback riding. - Animal watching tours; such as snorkeling, animal watching and hiking in a national park. - Cultural tours; such as Cacaco farm tour, Indian reserve, Sloth hospital and rescue centers. - Trips to other destinations; such as Panama City and Bocas del Toro in Panama, Tortuguero turtle reserve, Arenal Volcano and many other destinations all over Costa Rica. Safety is a must for us! Therefore we have all the certifications and insurance from the Costa Rica tourism board as well as all the other insurances needed. We operate out of Puerto Viejo, which is a small town located at the Caribbean side of Costa Rica. It is rich in nature and culture. Inhabitants have an interesting cultural mix of Afro-Caribbean, Bribri Indian and ticos . Puerto Viejo has several spectacular areas that are even of international importance. It includes protected areas such as Cahuita National Park and the Gandoca-Manzanillo Refuge. Recently Puerto Viejo has become a tourist’s hot spot, due to the, white-sand beaches, tropical vegetation and the relaxing laidback atmosphere! The town has an authentic atmosphere and is rich of nice bars and restaurants with reasonable prices.

We loved Costa Rica and especially Puerto Viejo so I hate to write a bad review for anything in this lovely town. However, my fiance and I went ziplining with this group on 12/24/13 for my birthday. We've ziplined in several other countries so this wasn't our first time. They do not have padding around their trees and you do not go through their lines as a group. Instead the one staff member on each platform is not only watching for the person coming in on the line but simultaneously hooking up the previous person on the next line. On the 5th line, I lost the grip on my break hand and started spinning. I ended up SLAMMING into the tree with my back as the staff member was too busy hooking up someone else on the next line!!!!! After I hit the tree, I slid about 20 feet back out on the line and dangled there in pain and shock! I looked up and they had already sent the next person down the line I was dangling from! Luckily, it was my fiance and he managed to stop right before he crashed into me at full force! The staff member had to crawl out on the line and tie a rope to my harness to pull me in. I knew I was badly hurt, and they did give me about 10 minutes to catch my breath before telling me they had no way to get me out without finishing the next 10 ziplines. They did however have an employee go with me on the rest. I will zipline again, but I would NEVER allow anyone I cared about to do a tour with this group!! In fact, several days later I ran into one of their employees at Punta Uva beach and she told us that their employees are constantly getting hurt as well!!! After going to my doctor and receiving many x-rays I was blessed not to have broken my back, but I spent the next three weeks horribly bruised! Six inches of my spinal column was bruised and it ran all the way to the top of my left shoulder. I had read other reviews of people being hurt on this zipline, but thought surely they had done something wrong. Turns out I was the one that was wrong! I place my well being in the hands of an utterly unprofessional company that was clearly pushing as many people through as fast as they could instead of making safety their top priority! I hope anyone reading this gives it more weight than the other bad reviews that I dismissed too easily!

We booked a Chocolate tour, Lunch with a Shaman, and Waterfall combination package - and did it the day before we went out. We were picked up fairly early at our hotel, driven to the Terraventuras offices in downtown Puerto Viejo - filled out some paperwork and then were on our way.... to pick up some more people.

Eventually, our very full shuttle left town and headed toward the Bri Bri. Once we got to a certain point, everyone doing the canopy and zip line tour got out and boarded a 4 wheel drive vehicle that looked like it would have been quite the ride itself (you sit on a bench in the back and hold on).

The remaining 3 of us continued with our guide, Aaron. Aaron was quite nice and knowledgable. Obviously, he had been guiding for a while.

The first stop we made was with an local family who showed us around the property a little bit and explained what uses the various trees and plants had. This tour was interesting, but not really what we had signed up for. It concluded with us getting a short history of the Bri Bri peoples, and their beliefs/traditions, etc. There was also many carved objects for sale (Gourds, Coconuts...). These people were nice - but not overly welcoming.

Our next stop was at one family's chocolate farm. Here, we did not tour the land so much as get a tour of how the chocolate was made - from extracting and drying the beans inside the cacao fruit to cooking them and masticating them with a huge (and ancient) mortar and pestle. There were only 3 on our tour, which was nice as we could ask specific questions and we were all invited to try smashing the cacao. The chocolate "truffles" we ended up with were very delicious, and very unique. Trust me - this is not anything like a hershey bar... The family that lived and worked here was very warm and welcoming. They loved what they do and it showed. Luis (the patriarch) was smart, funny, and a great host. We were treated to a local's lunch of chicken and veggies, served in a banana leaf. Delicious, but small. We also got some delicious hot chocolate at the end of the stay. Much better than Nestle's.

We were told upon leaving that the Shaman was not going to be available - he was off somewhere in the Jungle. We were understandably bummed about this part, but understood that they aren't really there to work around our schedules... (we also each received a $20 refund the next day because of this - which was nice. The offices didn't have to to that.)

Lastly, our waterfall adventure was ... lets say... tame. The waterfall itself is not a grandiose thing like in Yosemite or Hawaii. It was 20 or so feet tall - but it provided us a nice respite with cool water after being in the hot jungle all day.

Because we had a small group and because we had a great guide, I would absolutely recommend Terraventuras. If we had gone on the canopy tour, I think I would have strangled the lady from Boston who absolutely would not shut up. Then I would have gone to jail, and my review would have been much worse.

Many things on our Costa Rica trip were beyond my comfort zone but zip-lining through the jungle was at the top of the list! I was very unsure of myself but was assured by the staff that I would be fine. There was also a 10 year old girl in our group and a couple of other "senior citizens". The first line looked impossible but one of the staff gently and confidently hooked his line to mine and away we went!! After the first line, the second looked easy so I tried it myself and was able to go solo for the rest of the trip, even the Tarzan rope across a gully. Although the hike through the jungle was challenging, this was one of the highlights of our trip. We had the most fun ever!!! Thank you Terraventuras for a safe but very cool adventure.

Zip Lining in Costa Rica was long on my bucket list, and my experience with Terraventuras did not disappoint! There are 15 lines through breathtaking jungle. It surpassed my expectations! The staff are friendly and fun, and safety is never in doubt. They also did a great job reassuring the somewhat nervous. That being said, this is for the more adventurous travelor. If you are looking for fast lines, Terraventuras is the thrill of a lifetime!
