The primary reason we drove to the Puerto Viejo area was to go to the Jaguar Rescue Center (JRC) . Don't expect to see jaguars, but if possible, definitely go on a private tour to interact with animals. This was the highlight of our CR trip! As our first stop in CR and our first trip to Central America we were educated about snakes that we may encounter while in CR, their appearance, population, habitat and how to avoid a confrontation with poisonous snakes. We were also educated about the other wildlife we would and did encounter in CR. As a small group (family of four), the animals interacted with us. What a fantastic experience!! Having been to a few wildlife rescue centers, this one actually did feel like an animal 'rescue' more than a commercial profit business. I didn't feel guilty supporting their organization.
Please note that the JRC only has directional signs up only during business days, an hour prior to opening. I recall that it is right near Villas Del Caribe.
