Those of you who don't know yet soon will, but things in Costa Rica are usually quite pricey. For $15 this tour is a steal. You get a guide showing you the animals and telling you a little bit about each of them. I guess you see different animals based on when you go, but we just saw howler and whiteface monkeys, toucans, caiman, an ocelot, parrots, woodpeckers, cloths, aguti, snakes and several other animals. I learned a lot and had a lot of fun.

By buying an admission to the Jaguar Rescue Center, you are supporting a great cause. The animals are quite cute, especially the smiling sloths. Although, I wish they'd let us have more time with the Sloths and the monkeys and not focus so much on the snakes.

Had a great time learning about the native animals and how the center rehabilitates and attempts to re-release the animals into their natural habitat.

The passion the volunteers at the JRC have for the animals in their care is evident by the smiles on each of their faces as they interact with the animals and share their stories. All of the animals here are rescued and in the process of being rehabilitated to be returned to the wild. There is a wide variety of animals in their care and I appreciated the love that our guide, Danella, showed for the creepy crawly snakes and lizards, as well as the baby monkeys, sloths, and wild cats. The tour was very informative and I learned a lot about the wildlife in Costa Rica. We loved getting to hold and play with the baby howler monkeys. That was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity! We spent about 30 minutes just watching the baby sloths... too precious!

A fun excursion on the Caribbean side! Jaguar Rescue is very well maintained, and it's clear that the animals are cared for to the utmost. Waiting in the "lobby" before the tour was fascinating. Snake terrariums line the room and a giant curio case is filled with old local specimens! Tours last between 1.5 to 2 hours. The volunteer tour guide was friendly and very informed, making sure everyone in our large group got a chance to see and hear. The property is beautiful and it was lovely to walk around with ample photo opportunities (remember no flash for the animals:) Some of the tourists can be a little over-eager in the monkey enclosure though, trying to get their photos with a baby howler on their shoulder. The guides are clear beforehand in explaining the rules of the enclosure (have someone stand outside with the camera, don't force a monkey to stay on you, etc), but I saw people breaking these rules left and right rather than just enjoying the experience of meeting these wonderful creatures up close. I'd imagine it could stress a little monkey guy out to have some giant hanging onto him shoving an iphone in his face, so ideally tourist's behavior would be a little more regulated and watched over. The sloths, of course, are the highlight of the tour! A recommended activity, and a genuine cause to spend your tourism dollars on.
