“Not to be missed.”
Reviewed July 7, 2011

Hubby & I went there today with our 2 kids. We were all enthralled; just a great place doing really great things.
Kids under 10 are free & the entrance fee is very reasonable - all going to the center... Best value for money by far. Note that you can only get in at 9:30am and 11:30am.

“So glad we fit this into our trip!”
Reviewed July 6, 2011

We had such a great time. I would absolutely go back and I recommend it. The founders of the center are a primatologist and a serpentologist. The animals are treated well and are either prepared for reintroduction to the wild or rehabilitation for a stable life at the center.
We were able to hold the young howler monkeys which was the highlight. They need the stimulation while they are young so they allow the public to spend a max. of 30 mins a day with them. Our tour guide educated us on the process of rehabilitation and and the life cycles of some of the animals at the center. They no longer allow the public to handle their sloths but you still get a close look.
You can take the bus to Puerto Viejo if you are not staying near the center. We took a taxi from P. V. to the center for 3000 colones ($6). We decided to walk back to the P.V. bus station which took close to an hour.
The center is closed on Sundays. We went on a Monday and it was really busy. Luckily they split us up into three different tour groups but that meant that we got less time with the monkeys.
The center is maintained by volunteers (who work for free) and tour guides (who work for tips). Bring a bit of extra money to tip your tour guide.
Bring a camera! Also bring water because it gets pretty hot walking around.
The tour lasted about an hour and a half.
The money you spend on your ticket is the money that the center generates for caring for the animals. Each ticket is $14 and kids under 12 (I think it's twelve) are free. Refer to their website for prices.
You have to go on one of the tours and there are only 2 tours a day. The times are on the website as well but I think they are 9:30am and 11:30am. We went at 9:30am.
You really should fit this into your trip. We made it there in our last couple of days of a two month trip. I wish we had of gone earlier so we could have gone twice!

“Loved the sleepy monkey”
Reviewed June 14, 2011

My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed visiting the Jaguar Rescue Center. I have worked in animal rescue centers before and I was very impressed with everything they have done for the animals of Costa Rica. They are extremely knowledgeable about the animals they work with and are very dedicated to their cause. It is a MUST SEE stop in Puerto Viejo...it's not everyday that a howler monkey falls asleep in your arms.

“Play with the Monkeys!”
Reviewed June 13, 2011

This is an economical and fun way to spend a morning, learning about the local wildlife. The tours are very informative, the center is doing great work to protect the wildlife and it is great for people or all ages.

“No jaguars but fun, informative stop”
Reviewed June 13, 2011

The folks at the Jaguar Rescue Center allow visitors to get up close and personal with howler monkeys, sloths and snakes -- well the snakes through glass, thankfully. The guided walk-through is $14 well spent. It's a bit hard to spot the signage, so allow a little extra time to find your way if you are trying to make the 11 AM tour.

How can we not give 5 stars to SDAdventurers? Has a great sense of humor. With a nick name like this and you can’t find the main street of the village, the only one that everybody knows? Imagine the adventures of SDAdventurers lost in the vast deserts of the south of California or in the labyrinth of the small streets of Naples? Off course am just kidding since you have a great sense of humor.
You are right, there are not a lot of signs guiding to the center but we prefer not to disturb the beautiful landscape surrounding us with advertising posters and then we would not like to take away the joy of the adventurous, like SDAdventurers to discover us!
Keep on fighting for nature! Pura vida. Sandro Alviani
