“Excellent restaurant in Puerto Viejo”
Reviewed April 3, 2013 via mobile

Amazing atmosphere...the perfect Costa Rican tastes in a restaurant. We sat at the counter overlooking puerto viejo's Main Street...the chefs prepare everything right behind you in the outdoor kitchen. Everything was amazing...the coconut-topped chicken fingers, the burrito, the tuna burger, the trio tacos (bananas as toppings!!!) Service was also great. I wouldn't mind there being more food served as I wasn't left completely full, but the stellar taste made up for it.

“Great sushi, other food less”
Reviewed April 3, 2013

The sushi in this place is magnificent. Real tasty. If you are searching for other food there are better places in Puerto Viejo.

“Too Little, too late..”
Reviewed March 29, 2013

Wish we hadn’t found it..

Based on a recommendation from our hotelowner, we set out to find this restaurant in the centre.. which we eventually did after looking up. She hadn’t told us that it wasn’t on street level. Feeling silly we went up and were glad to sees that we still made happy hour. We ordered some cocktails which were the worst we had in Costa Rica. Typical cheap European all-in hotel made with local liquor and colourful syrup style cocktails.. in plastic glasses. Yuck!

Quite a disappointment but we were hungry and looking forward to the food although we had ordered something simple, the tortilla’s in 3 different styles (fish, chicken and meat).
It took so unbelievably long that we even considered leaving. It was crowded but not so much for the restaurant, more for the giant screen broadcasting a soccermatch. (Including the very loud cheering which is amusing, but not really romantic.. saying that this restaurant is good for romantic dates is simply not true.. although you do get lots of time to stare into each other’s eyes since it takes hours before you get food ;))
Maybe the cook was watching as well?

When it finally arrived it was the biggest disappointment ever. Three very small open corn tortillas simply smacked onto a plate with the minimum of topping/meat or anything. No lettuce, nothing. Some meat and some sauce, some fish and some sauce, some chicken and some sauce. It took us about 1 minute to eat all three of them and were left hungry and unsatisfied. It was not advertised as a starter, but as a main course (in case you are wondering).

Probably the wide variety of choices (sushi, tex-mex..) is their biggest strength since they can probably serve to anyone’s taste but also a huge weakness since they obviously can’t keep up a certain (not even high, average would do it) standard for all those dishes. Given the very very different reviews and ratings and some of the photos, they probably pay a lot more attention to other dishes. (although that does not explain the cocktails, the long wait,..).

It was touristy, overly prices compared to other options around town, more a thing for large groups, not a pleasant athmosphere..

Kind of a bummer.. Luckily we found out the next night that there are much much much better choices out there!

About the review below: in CR it is normal to add a 13% sales tax and 10% service tax. Some restaurants just include it beforehand and some to not add the 13% if you pay in cash. This should not be a big surprise for any prepared traveller to Costa Rica..

“Food was just ok. You can do much better in town.”
Reviewed March 29, 2013 via mobile

We are at Chile Rojo our first night in PV and it was definitely our weakest meal. It is fun to sit on the second floor and watch all the happenings on Main Street. Overall, we found much better food elsewhere.

“Abused tax - 23% and poor value for money”
Reviewed March 24, 2013

The food was OK, we took the special menu with a 3 course meal. the entrance was pretty tasteless, the main course (fish) was good, and the dessert was OK.

The live music was way too loud, we could not hear each other. And let's say that the place itself has a great location, but it's way too Americanised.

Was striked us was the added tax of 13 % added to the standard 10%.

Which brings your menu from 6500 to 8300. That felt like a stab on the back.
So yes it was written very small on the bottom of the menu, but....that sounds to me like a big robbery.

If you want real love in your plate for a much more decent price and no bad surprise, just go down the street you will find an awesome restaurant which has the name of a type of shoes for the beach.
